Die Ottawa Senators sind noch weiter im Rennen. Mit einem 3-1 Heimerfolg vor 18.500 Besucher im heimischen Corel Centre verhinderten die Senators ein vorzeitiges Aus gegen die New Jersey Devils. Auffälligster Akteur auf dem Eis und Matchwinner für die Kanadier wurde dabei der erst 19-jährige Jason Spezza(53.pp), der seine erste NHL-Playoffpartie bestreiten durfte. Spezza, für Chris Neil ins Team gekommen, war an den beiden entscheidenden Treffern der Hausherren im Schlussabschnitt beteiligt. Zunächst assistierte er bei der 2-1 Führung von Martin Havlat(48.) und 4 1/2 Minuten danach, als gerade vier Sekunden im Powerplay verstrichen waren, gelang dem Jungtalent das Tor zum 3-1 Endstand.

"It didn't matter how I contributed or what I contributed as long as we won. I was just a happy to help out." Ottawa scored a pair of third-period goals to gain the critical victory. The Senators took a 2-1 lead at 7:59 when Martin Havlat scored his fifth of the Playoffs. Spezza started the play by winning an offensive zone faceoff over Pascal Rheaume and sending the puck back to Wade Redden at the point. Spezza gave his team a 3-1 lead at 12:28, when he tallied his first career Playoff goal on the power play. With Brian Gointa off for hooking, the Ottawa rookie got the play going when he won an offensive zone draw off Rheaume and sent the puck back to Zdeno Chara at the right point. Chara sent a pass cross-ice to Chris Phillips, who threaded a quick pass to a wide-open Spezza in the slot. The youngster looked like an experienced veteran on the play, re-directing the feed through Brodeur's legs to give his team the two-goal lead. "We had a lot of good chances on the power play all night. Philly made a great play," Spezza said. "I was just finishing off his work there. For a defenseman to se you in the slot like that ? it's an awesome play. I was happy to get the puck there and it was good to score." The second player selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Spezza, who had seven goals and 21 points in 33 games this season, was inserted into the Eastern Conference Finals lineup for the first time and paid handsome dividends with his goal and assist. Ottawa was 0-for-15 on the power play coming into Game 5 and Jacques Martin tried to change things up by inserting Spezza into the lineup in place of feisty forward Chris Neil. Even though the youngster had no impact on the Sens' first man advantage in the opening period, Spezza came through when it counted, helping his team get back in the series in his first-ever Stanley Cup Playoff game.

The New Jersey center beat Bonk on the draw and sent a backhand feed to Stevens at the left point. After catching the pass with his stick, the Devils captain let a slapper go that beat Lalime through a screen on the far side. Lalime didn't see the puck until it was by him, as he had Rheaume, Bonk, Phillips, and Chara blocking his view of the play. Ottawa carried the play in the second period, out-shooting the Devils 12-6 in the middle session. White led all Ottawa players with three shots in the second period, including his goal at 3:59 and a wrister on the power play at 19:22. New Jersey's half dozen shots were spread out over six different players. "We knew they were going to come out strong at us; we knew that," New Jersey coach Pat Burns said. "As the game got on they seemed to get a little bit stronger. We gave them opportunities that we shouldn't have."

"I'm disappointed with the loss more than I am with the effort. At this time of year I don't think effort is a question. I think it's two good teams and momentum can change from period to period, goal to goal. These are two good teams. These things happen and we have to go back and regroup and they have to go back to the Devils' den and we'll be waiting."

Nach einer guten Viertelstunde in der Verlängerung reagierte der Verteidiger am schnellsten und ließ Devils' Schlussmann Martin Brodeur keine Abwehrchance. Die Hausherren hatten damit zum ersten Mal in diesem Jahr zuhause eine Playoffpartie verloren, 8-0 lautete bis dato ihre eindrucksvolle Bilanz in der Continental Airlines Arena von East Rutherford. Gerade in der Overtime hatten die Devils einige Male die Gelegenheit vorzeitig den Einzug in das Stanley Cup Finale perfekt zu machen, doch Gästeschlussmann Patrick Lalime hielt die kanadischen Gäste mit seinen Paraden am Leben. New Jersey größte Chance vergab Brian Gionta bei einem 2 zu 1 Konter zusammen mit Patrik Elias. In den engagiert geführten 60 Minuten der regulären Spielzeit neutralisierten sich die Kontrahenten weitgehend. Jedes Team hatte seine Drangperioden ohne jedoch entscheidend davonziehen zu können. Beide Treffer, das 1-0 für die Gäste von Radek Bonk(38.pp) zum Ende des Mittelabschnitts und der Ausgleich durch Joe Nieuwendyk(43.pp) zu Beginn des letzten Drittels, fielen jeweils aus einer nummerischen Überlegenheit heraus. Bereits übermorgen wird es zum großen Showdown kommen. Die Senators genießen in Spiel 7 Heimrecht und setzen dabei laut Lalime auf ihre Fans: "Es wird großartig werden. Schon im fünften Spiel haben uns die Zuschauer weitergeholfen. Wir werden unser bestes Spiel des Jahres bringen müssen." Noch nie in ihrer Franchisegeschichte haben die New Jersey Devils eine Playoffserie verloren, in der sie bereits mit 3-1 geführt haben.

In der "best of seven"-Serie steht es nun 3:3, in der Nacht zum Samstag steht nun das entscheidende Duell in Ottawa auf dem Plan. Der Sieger trifft im NHL-Finale auf die Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Zwar war Phillips am Ende der gefeierte Mann, doch Marian Hossa nahm durch den Erfolg süße Rache für die zwar faire, aber sehr harte Gangart der Devils gegen seine Person. Dank seiner Schnelligkeit bereitete er in der 16. Minute der Verlängerung den Siegtreffer maßgeblich vor. "Wir haben zwar jetzt die besseren Karten, doch wenn der Puck am Freitag fällt, beginnt ein neues Spiel", so Torschütze Phillips, "jedes der Spiele war bisher ein Kampf und das erwarte ich auch für Freitag".
Nach der regulären Spielzeit hieß es in der Continental Airlines Arena 1:1. Radek Bonk hatte die Senators in Front gebracht, Joe Nieuwendyk ausgeglichen.
Und das geilste ist: Von Freitag auf Samstag um 1 Uhr überträgt Premiere live. Keinen Urlaub nehmen. Schön auspennen am Samstag und nachts schön Spiel 7 glotzen. Des werd schee...
