Ottawa - New Jersey 2-5 (1-1/1-1/0-3) (Playoffstand 1-3)
Einen völligen Einbruch erlebten die Ottawa Senators im Schlussdrittel ihres zweiten Auswärtsauftrittes in der Continental Airlines Arena der New Jersey Devils. Innerhalb der ersten zehn Spielminuten im dritten Durchgang mussten die Kanadier gleich drei Gegentreffer von Jeff Friesen(41.pp), Patrik Elias(45.) und John Madden(48.sh) hinnehmen. Bei zumindest zwei Gegentoren machte dabei Gästeschlussmann Patrick Lalime, der jeweils den Puck im kurzen Eck passieren ließ, eine mehr als unglückliche Figur. In den ersten zwei Spielabschnitten waren die Kanadier ein durchaus ebenbürtiger Gegner und hatten sogar die besseren Einschussmöglichkeiten. Die Hausherren agierten jedoch gewohnt diszipliniert und eiskalt im Abschluss. Grant Marshall(8.pp) nutzte das zweite Überzahlspiel zur zu diesem Zeitpunkt schmeichelhaften 1-0 Führung. Noch vor der Pause sollte Karel Rachunek(20.) der Gleichstand gelingen. Die Senators starteten auch stark in den Mittelabschnitt und gingen durch Vaclav Varada(28.) nicht unverdient in Front. Anschließend bewiesen die Devils, dass sie auch mit einem Rü,ckstand gut zurecht kommen, stellten ihr Spielsystem um und taten mehr für die Offensive. Jay Pandolfo(37.) bezwang Lalime mit einem durchaus haltbaren Gewaltschuss aus Höhe des Bullykreises zum 2-2. Kurz vor Drittelende verhängten die Referees eine zweifelhafte aber folgenschwere Strafe gegen Alfredsson, die den Anfang vom Ende für die Senators bedeutete. Bereits am Montag können nun die Devils, ein weiterer Erfolg im Corel Centre von Ottawa vorausgesetzt, den vorzeitigen Einzug in das Stanley Cup Finale perfekt machen.

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils came back from the dead and put the Ottawa Senators on life support.
Jeff Friesen, Patrik Elias and John Madden scored third-period goals as the Devils stormed back from a prolonged listless stretch and defeated the Senators, 5-2, to open a three games to one lead in the Eastern Conference finals.
Ottawa appeared in control after Vaclav Varada's goal broke a 1-1 tie 7:08 into the second period. At the time, the Senators had an 18-6 advantage in shots.
But the momentum shifted with 3:17 to go in the second when Jay Pandolfo, a member of the Devils' checking line, scored his third goal of the series. With 52 seconds remaining, Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson punched Scott Gomez in the back of the head and drew a retaliatory roughing penalty.
The ensuing power play carried into the third period, and Friesen put New Jersey in front at the 41-second mark when he deflected defenseman Brian Rafalski shot from the blue line down and through goaltender Patrick Lalime.
Elias made it 4-2 just over 3 1/2 minutes later, beating Lalime with a blast from the top of the right faceoff circle.
Madden finished off a shorthanded 2-on-none break - and the Senators - at 7:35 with his sixth playoff goal.
Martin Brodeur made 26 saves and Grant Marshall scored the other goal for New Jersey, which can advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third time in four years with a win on Monday in Ottawa.
The Senators have lost three in a row for the first time since January 27-30.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- For 40 minutes, the Ottawa Senators were playing the perfect road game at the Continental Airlines Arena. They had taken the lead on the New Jersey Devils in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals and appeared poised to tie the series at 2-2. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Devils awoke. Perhaps prodded by one of Martin Brodeur's sensational saves, or chided by the words of coach Pat Burns, the Devils scored one goal late in the second period and then potted three more in the third to skate away with a 5-2 victory in Game 4 and a 3-1 lead in the series against the reeling Senators. Ottawa now must win out to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. In contrast, New Jersey needs to win one of the next three games to advance to the Finals.

The Senators were dominating so effectively that it appeared they would skate off after two periods with the lead. But Jay Pandolfo scored his fourth goal of the playoffs off a John Madden feed at 16:43 to knot the score at 2-2 and finally give New Jersey some much needed momentum. That momentum resulted in some excellent scoring chances the rest of the way as the Devils tested Patrick Lalime several times over the remainder of the period. Still, the Senators were playing a sound road game and had controlled big chunks of the contest. But that changed dramatically in the third period as the Devils awoke with a vengeance and poured it on before a sellout crowd that loved every minute of it. "Their first goal (by defenseman Karel Rachunek at 19:45 of the first period) really got to us," Burns said. "At that point in time in the period it really took the air out of us and we had to readjust. I would say that lingered for three-quarters of the second period. Then, we got the tying goal that Jay got and then we went into the dressing room and we talked about things we have to do. We came back to the basics and it certainly paid off." Just 41 seconds into the third period New Jersey regained the lead for good, 3-2, as Jeff Friesen scored a power-play goal, making the Senators pay for a Daniel Alfredsson roughing penalty late in the second period. At 4:17 of the third, Patrik Elias, snake-bit for the majority of the postseason, scored his second goal of the Playoffs when his slap shot hit Lalime in the left shoulder and bounded into the net, giving the Devils a 4-2 lead and taking a lot of the wind out of Ottawa's sails. And when John Madden scored a shorthanded goal at 7:35 off a nice pass from Pandolfo, the Devils had a three-goal edge and reduced the Senators to wondering about what they needed to do Monday night in Game 5 to stay alive.

"Yeah, I think you take the positives from today, like how we played for 40 minutes," Senators coach Jacques Martin said. "I think we played pretty well , the score was tied, but with a bit of luck we could have been ahead. So you have to build on that and you give everything you have on Monday." Which is exactly what the Devils are expecting from Ottawa. "We just take it one game at a time," Devils captain Scott Stevens said. "We're playing a pretty good hockey team, the best we have seen so far in the Playoffs. To close out Tampa (in the second round) we had to go to overtime in our own building. It's going to be very difficult in that building with their fans behind them. They are going to start like they did today. We're just thinking about winning the next hockey game and going from there."
New Jersey opened the scoring at the 7:25 mark of the first period, scoring on their first shot of the game, a Grant Marshall shot from the right circle eluding Lalime's glove with the Devils on the power play. Elias picked up the lone assist on the goal, shuffling the puck to Marshall from the slot. New Jersey came into Game 4 with a 7-0 record when scoring the first goal of the game. A rare mistake by Scott Stevens led to Ottawa tying the game in the waning moments of the period on a screened shot by Rachunek at 19:45 of the first. Stevens lost the puck to Alfredsson behind the New Jersey net and the Ottawa captain sent the puck out to Rachunek at the right point. His shot beat a screened Brodeur through the legs as Stevens blocked the goalie's view as he scrambled to cover the play to the point. The Senators held the territorial edge in the first, out-shooting New Jersey by an 11-3 count in an opening period that was ragged and uneven as both teams tried to gain some measure of control. Penalties abounded in the first period with New Jersey taking three trips to the penalty box and Ottawa two. Aside from the screened shot by Rachunek, Brodeur was strong in net once again for the Devils, making good saves on shots by Bryan Smolinski, Martin Havlat, Rachunek and Alfredsson.

Lalime, not tested as severely, made a good stop on Elias from in close with 7:32 remaining in the opening period. The momentum of the late goal carried the Senators for much of the second period as Ottawa dominated territorially for the first 15 minutes, talking a 2-1 lead on a Vaclav Varada goal at 7:08 and penning New Jersey up in its zone for minutes at a time. New Jersey summoned up some energy late, however, tying the score, 2-2, at 16:43 on a slap shot from Jay Pandolfo from the left circle that turned the momentum -- and the game -- around. Ottawa opened the second with a flurry that Brodeur denied. He stopped a slapper off the stick of Mike Fisher, smothered another drive by Marian Hossa and then made a remarkable save on Magnus Arvedson with 17:17 remaining in the period when Brodeur appeared to have no shot at stopping Arvedson who was open to Brodeur's right. Arvedson had Brodeur down and apparently out, but the New Jersey goaltender twisted and turned and blocked the shot with his elbow, making a sensational save. "I don't know exactly how that play happened," Brodeur said. "The puck got to Arvedson and I was trying to buy time until I got some help. He was moving away, moving away and I was stretching. When I made the save, we had time to recover and get the rebound out of the way." Brodeur couldn't do much to stop Varada who eluded covered on the left side and had plenty of time to set up his shot as he moved closer and closer to the New Jersey goal, eventually beating Brodeur with his shot from the lower rim of the left circle. "Our backs are against the wall now, " Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips said. " It's three Game 7s for us now. They're so strong defensively. We have to create opportunities when they're there." "I've gotta be better," Lalime said. "I've got to find those pucks. I've got to play better." That's the case for all of the Senators now. There is no choice anymore.

Danach spielten vor 19.040 Zuschauern allerdings nur noch die Devils. Zuerst egalisierte Jay Pandolfo (16:43) den Rückstand, dann schlugen zu Beginn des Schlussdrittels Jeff Friesen (0:41) in Überzahl, Patrik Elias (4:17) und John Madden (7:35) gnadenlos zum 5:2-Endstand zu.
New Jersey überzeugte im vierten Aufeinandertreffen mit Vorrundenmeister Ottawa aber nicht nur in der Offensive, auch Goalie Martin Brodeur war einmal mehr schier unüberwindlich. Der Kanadier hielt in den ersten beiden Dritteln 21 von 23 Schüssen auf seinen Kasten und bewahrte seine Farben vor einem größeren Rückstand. "Wir wissen, dass wir den schwierigsten Sieg noch holen müssen: den vierten", gab Torschütze Friesen einen Vorgeschmack auf das fünfte und vielleicht letzte Spiel der Serie am Montag im Corel Centre zu Ottawa.
