No charges for Hasek
By Matthew Schwartz Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek will not face charges of causing bodily harm in his native Czech Republic, freeing him of any legal problems that could have prevented him from joining the team this fall.
"I am glad that the whole affair is ending," Hasek told the Czech news agency CTK. "Now I will be able to fully focus on day-to-day life and the forthcoming ice hockey season."
The prosecutor involved with the case, Lenka Strnadova, has halted the criminal investigation and ordered that the case be treated as misdemeanor.
"Criminal charges will not be pressed," Strnadova told The Associated Press.
Hasek now faces a maximum fine of 3,000 koruna ($95 US). Hasek was already fined $70 by the inline hockey league he was playing in.
On May 18th Hasek, a defenseman for Bonfire Strada, was involved in an incident with Martin Sila, a player for SK Pardubice. The two players collided, after which Hasek cross-checked Sila to the ground and then sat on the fallen player while striking him in the back of the neck with his stick.
However Hasek's lawyer, Pavel Jelinek, said in a statement Friday that many of the media reports of the incident were blown out of porportion.
"In fact, Mr. Sila did not have any fractures, not a broken nose, no teeth knocked out, no cuts, not a single scratch or bruise," Jelinek said.
Czech laws dicate that being convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm carries a maximum eight-year prison sentence.
The news is also beneficial to the Red Wings, which were awaiting the outcome of the investigation. The Red Wings are currently in trade talks concerning goaltender Curtis Joseph but wanted to be certain of Hasek's fate before dealing the former No. 1.
Trying to find a new home for Curtis Joseph may be on hold. According to a report in the Toronto Sun, the Detroit Red Wings goaltender underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken ankle and is expected to be out for four or five months which means he would not be ready to play until January. An MRI exam at a Cleveland hospital, possibly ordered by the Boston Bruins who were supposedly trying to work out a deal for Joseph, revealed that he required surgery. The injury will likely put an end to any imminent trade talks the Red Wings were having with teams interested in acquiring the goaltender. Don Meehan, Joseph's agent, refused to comment about the injury but said he would discuss the situation further on Wednesday. Calls to Red Wings brass Ken Holland, Jim Nill and Jimmy Devellano were not returned on Tuesday.

Bei einer Kernspintomographie in einem Krankenhaus in Cleveland, die möglicherweise von den Boston Bruins veranlasst worden ist, stellte sich die Notwendigkeit einer Operation heraus. Die Bruins galten als wahrscheinlicher Abnehmer für den 8 Millionen Dollar teuren Keeper. Joseph's Agent, Don Meehan, verweigerte bisher jeglichen Kommentar, will sich aber im Laufe der Woche noch an die Öffentlichkeit wenden. Die Verantwortlichen der Red Wings gaben bisher ebenfalls keinerlei Stellungnahme ab. Sollte sich das Gerücht als zutreffend erweisen, werden die Gespräche zwischen den Red Wings und möglichen Interessenten an Joseph zumindest vorerst stoppen.
Maple Leafs: Neil Smith bald neuer Generalmanager?
Toronto, 19. August Medienberichten zufolge verdichten sich die Gerüchte in der NHL, dass noch in dieser Woche Neil Smith als neuer Generalmanager der Toronto Maple Leafs vorgestellt wird. Wie Zeitungen berichten, hat der ehemalige Generalmanager der New York Rangers die Spitzenposition im Kampf um den noch immer freien Posten eingenommen. Trotz namhafter Konkurrenz wie dem Präsidenten des Kanadischen Eishockeyverbandes Bob Nicholson oder dem Vize Präsident der St.Louis Blues John Ferguson Junior. Neil Smith, der vor drei Jahren als GM der Rangers entlassen wurde, hatte schon letzte Woche zwei Treffen mit den Verantwortlichen der Maple Leafs. Bekannt für seine großen Trades als Generalmanager der New York Rangers, die Spieler wie Luc Robitaille oder Pat LaFontaine zu den Blueshirts brachten, wird ein Transfer wohl nie in Vergessenheit geraten. 1991 holte er Mark Messier von Edmonton nach New York. Viele sagen, dass dieser Deal den Rangers 1994 den Stanley Cup einbrachte. In einer seiner letzten großen Taten für die Rangers verpflichtete Smith 1996 Wayne Gretzky. Der ausbleibende Erfolg, nach dem Stanley Cup Gewinn, der mit Stars bestückten Truppe, bescherte ihm letzten Endes den Rauswurf. NHL: Lemieux wieder "auf Eis" - Knieprobleme düstern Bure´s Zukunft
Pittsburgh/New York, 19. August Das erste Mal nach der vergangenen Saison begab sich Mario Lemieux für eine 45-minütige Trainingseinheit wieder auf das Eis. Lemieux, der erst vor wenigen Wochen bekannt gab, dass er 2003/2004 für die Penguins spielen wird, befindet sich offenbar in der „Form seines Lebens“. Er ist körperlich deutlich besser vorbereitet, als im Jahr zuvor. Um dies zu ermöglichen wurde ein spezieller Trainingsplan für Lemieux von seinem langjährigen persönlichen Fitnesstrainer Tom Plasko entwickelt. Dieser trainiert vor allem seinen lädierten Rücken, der ihn oft zwang mehrere Spiele auszusetzen.
Pavel Bure, immer noch geplagt von den Problemen mit seinem rechten Knie, sieht keiner rosigen Zukunft entgegen. Das rechte, mehrfach operierte Knie schmerzt noch so stark, dass die Karriere des russischen Superstars der New York Rangers auf dem Spiel steht. Letzte Saison unterzog sich Bure zwei Operationen in einem Zeitraum von 11 Wochen. Die Verletzung, die Bänder und Knorpel in Mitleidenschaft gezogen hatte, belastet Bure noch heute. So sind hohe Belastungen und Drehungen des Knies (noch) tabu. Doch gerade das ist es, was Pavel Bure´s Spiel ausmacht. Ziemlich unpassender Zeitpunkt. Naja, kann man jetzt nicht ändern. Jetzt stellt sich nur folgende Frage. Wie ist das in der NHL mit verletzten Spielern ? Wer zahlt das Gehalt ? Wenn das Geld jetzt frei wäre, könnte man wenigstens noch nen teuren Center verpflichten. Ansonsten muss man halt hoffen, das CuJo rechtzeitig zu den Playoffs wieder fit ist und das dann ein anderes Team dringend einen Goalie braucht und dafür digg was locker macht.....
...aber gut, das Hasek zurück ist. Wenn er nicht da wäre müsste man jetzt nach nem Center und nem Goalie suchen...

Red Wings: Joseph out 6 weeks

The Red Wings were quick with damage control Wednesday morning following a report in the Toronto Sun stating that goaltender Curtis Joseph would miss five months due to a broken ankle and subsequent surgery.
The Red Wings released a statement on their team's official web site stating that Joseph had a bone chip removed from one of his ankles and the resulting procedure will leave the netminder sidelined only six weeks -- a drastic departure from the previously reported five months from the Sun.
"He did have successful surgery on his ankle, which was not broken," team spokesman John Hahn said. "This surgery was described by team physicians as minor in nature. He should be able to return to skating in six weeks, just before the regular seasons starts."
"He was experiencing discomfort and irritation, so it was a good time to get it taken care of."
Detroit sports radio personality Art Regner spoke with GM Ken Holland this morning and stated that the team was aware of Joseph's ailment but hoped that the injury could be rehabbed over the summer. When the injury didn't subside -- and with a possible trade looming -- Joseph and the Red Wings opted to have an MRI, and the surgery that followed, performed.
The procedure, called posterior impingement surgery that removed a bone chip in the back of Joseph's ankle, was performed at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday.
The Red Wings still hope to have Joseph traded by the start of Training Camp, which opens on Sept. 11.
"If somebody calls me today and offers what I think is fair for Curtis Joseph, and it's a situation that is good for Curtis Joseph, then I'd make the deal today," Holland told reporters Wednesday. "That hasn't happened yet. There has been a lot of interest in him, but there hasn't been enough there to get a deal done yet."
The Boston Bruins and, to a lesser extent, the New York Rangers remain the leading candidates to land Joseph. The Atlanta Thrashers have also expressed an interest, according to Red Wings Senior VP Jim Devellano.
"Obviously, it helps to trade somebody when he's 100 per cent healthy," Devellano said. "But the teams that have talked to us about Joseph, and other teams that are thinking about it, should not lose interest because he'll be out a maximum of six weeks."
Joseph's agent, Don Meehan, added that the surgery shouldn't hinder the Red Wings' ability to trade him since his client will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Detroit Red Wings forward Darren McCarty, citing a long running battle with substance abuse, apologized Friday for not attending his annual charity golf tournament earlier in the week, TSN reported on its Web site.
"For the past seven years, I have actively fought a substance abuse issue," McCarty said in a statement on the site. "While most people do not recognize that this personal challenge exists on a day-to-day basis, it is an ongoing concern I will carry for the rest of my entire life.
"This offseason, it became apparent to me that my efforts required additional attention," he said. "I wanted to address the issue before the upcoming season and voluntarily began a maintenance program three weeks ago."
He has admitted to being an alcoholic in the past.
McCarty has spent his entire 10-season career in Detroit. In July, he agreed to a four-year deal with the Red Wings and that kept him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
He scored 13 goals and had nine assists in 73 games last season.
Cujo-to-BOS Out: Bruins sign Potvin (9/03) The Boston Bruins announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent goaltender Felix Potvin to a one-year contract. The move effectively brings to an end any further speculation that the Red Wings were likely to deal usurped No. 1 Curtis Joseph to the Bruins once he recovered from surgery later this month.
The move also makes the likelihood that Joseph will be made available in the waiver draft a certainty, unless the New York Rangers come in late with an offer -- which is unlikely, since Boston was rumored to be part of the deal if the Rangers traded Mike Dunham to make room for Joseph -- or a mystery team enters the bidding.

Ich kenn noch ein Team, die dringend einen guten Starting Goalie brauchen. Ich hatte eigentlich fest damit gerechnet, das DIE den Potvin holen würden, aber das hat sich ja jetzt erledigen. Nur werden DIE wahrscheinlich keinen direkten Trade mit Detroit machen, sondern wenn überhaupt, dann CuJo über die Waiver-Liste holen. Allerdings wird dann sein 2-Jahres-16-Millionen-Vertrag zu bezahlen sein, und ob das überhauptnoch jemand zahlt, ist fraglich...

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Helene St. James reports yesterday's signing of goaltender Felix Potvin by the Boston Bruins effectively takes them out of the running in the Curtis Joseph sweepstakes. It's still believed the Atlanta Thrashers are interested, and St. James suggests either the NY Rangers might get involved, or the Washington Capitals, provided a third team is involved. If the Wings haven't traded Joseph by October 3, they must put him in the waiver draft and risk losing him for nothing.
Spector's Note: I'm sorry, but given the glut of goaltenders the Thrashers possess, as well as their limited budget, I just don't see how or why they'd be interested in Joseph. Just doesn't make sense! As for the Rangers, for the umpteenth time, they've given NO indication they're interested in Joseph. GM Glen Sather denied any plans to obtain CuJo two months ago, and given that Mike Dunham played better than Joseph last season, that's another move that just doesn't make sense. As for the Caps, the only way that'll work is if the Wings take Robert Lang off their hands (forget about Jaromir Jagr, he's too pricey even for the Wings!) and if another club gets involved. But who might that other club be? The only one that makes sense, the only one that needs a proven starter and can afford to pick up most of his salary, is the Wings archrivals, the Colorado Avalanche. As for the waiver draft, it's quite possible the Avs could pluck Cujo from the Wings that way, although again, his big contract could be a sticking point.
