DETROIT NEWS: John Niyo suggested in a recent column that the Red Wings should consider swinging a deal with the NY Rangers for Eric Lindros should Sergei Fedorov opt for free agency this summer. Niyo cites the Wings supposed interest in Lindros two years ago, noting team captain Steve Yzerman lobbied hard in hopes of convincing GM Ken Holland to trade for his friend.
Spector's Note: Yzerman also put in a good word for Eddie Belfour last summer, but Holland went with Cujo. Obviously, the captain doesn't hold that much clout with Detroit management! Lindros would not be an adequate replacement for Fedorov. His stock is down substantially from two years ago, and he carries an awful lot of baggage.

TORONTO SUN: Al Strachan reported a week ago that this was probably the final season in Detroit for gritty forward Darren McCarty, who's an unrestricted free agent this summer unless the Red Wings re-sign him before July 1. The Wings wish to keep him and are willing to bump him up from his current $1.95 million per season to $2.5 million per season, but Strachan believes McCarty will probably get a million more than that elsewhere. The reporter believes the Wings will probably be out-bid for McCarty.
Spector's Note: One shouldn't dismiss that possibility, especially with the Wings focussing on finding a way to retain Sergei Fedorov. However, McCarty wants to stay in Detroit and may be willing to accept $2.5 mil per season to do so. If the Wings cannot re-sign Fedorov, it increases the likelihood of matching any outside bidders for McCarty.

DETROIT NEWS: Ted Kulfan reports that teams desperate for a goaltending upgrade "such as Philadelphia and Vancouver" might consider contacting the agent of former Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek to see if he'd consider coming out of retirement. If so, he'd be "a valuable bargaining chip" for the Wings. As Detroit still owns Hasek's rights, any club interested in him would have to trade with the Wings to get him. While "the Dominator's" agent, Rich Winter, says he "jokes" with his client about offers from other clubs, he says Hasek has given no indication he'd want to come out of retirement, while the Wings GM, Ken Holland, says he's had no discussion on the subject with Hasek or Winter.
Spector's Note: We can thank Larry Brooks of the NY Post for this, as he made the suggestion in a recent article. Wouldn't hurt to ask, but I doubt Hasek wants to return to NHL action. He was getting older and injuries were catching up to him and, put simply, he knew the time was right when he finally won a Cup.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Nicholas Cotsonika reports Red Wings GM Ken Holland continues to negotiate with the agents for impending free agents Sergei Fedorov, Darren McCarty and Jason Woolley, but no new deals are imminent. Regarding Fedorov, Cotsonika cites sources as claiming the club is offering a high salary but a shorter term. McCarty wants a raise from the $1.95 million he was making last season, but the Wings apparently wish to pay him roughly the same amount. Holland would like to re-sign Woolley but there's nothing new on that front. As for another impending UFA, forward Igor Larionov, Holland isn't negotiating with his agent. Larionov, who turns 43 next season, said he'd like to return for one more year, but would only play for the Red Wings.
Spector's Note: If push comes to shove, expect McCarty and Woolley to be cut loose in order for the Wings to re-sign Fedorov. As for Larionov, he should probably start making retirement plans now. It doesn't appear as though Holland wants him back.
