Pittsburgh Penguins Thread geschlossen

LEMIEUX TO DUMP PENGUINS FOR BROADWAY?

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports two sources as claiming Pittsburgh Penguins captain Mario Lemieux may attempt to sell off his share of ownership of the club in order to put him on the unrestricted free agent market this summer. Lemieux would be seeking $10-$12 million US per season and would apparently be interested in playing for the New York Rangers, whom Brooks believes is the only NHL team that could afford him. However, the Rangers would have to make a decision as to attempts at buying out Eric Lindros and may need to know before July first of Lemieux's intentions before considering a buyout of Lindros, which would be more expensive after July 1.

CBC'S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA: during the second intermission "Sattelite Hotstove", Toronto Sun columnist Al Strachan also made mention of Lemieux considering selling his ownership of the Pens to pursue free agency. Strachan reports a rumour of Montreal Canadiens president Pierre Boivin being willing to pay Lemieux up to $15 million US per season to play for the Habs, as well as potential interest by the Rangers.

Spector's Note: My thanks to "Word". At the risk of this blowing up in my face, I still don't see Lemieux bailing on the Penguins at this, their lowest point. He may not return to play, but surely he knows that, if he were to sell off his share of the struggling franchise, it could signal the death-knell of the Penguins. Not to mention the very bad publicity that would be attached to such a move. Selling those shares won't be easy, either. If he does go to the Rangers, they would probably finally have the missing ingredient to make the playoffs for the first time in six years, but their woeful defensive game would still make them a marginal playoff team.

THE LATEST ON MARIO LEMIEUX.

TSN.CA: reports sources claim Mario Lemieux wants to return to action next season, but with a different team. That will be difficult, as Lemieux would have to find someone to buy his share of the Pittsburgh Penguins before he can play for another club. Apparently Lemieux would only be interested in playing for either the NY Rangers or Philadelphia Flyers, and has no interest in playing for the Montreal Canadiens. It's not known if Lemieux would return to play for the Pens if he cannot find a buyer for his share of the team.

PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Joe Starkey reports it's possible but unlikely Mario Lemieux will be playing for another NHL club next season, citing the complicated business transactions required for Lemieux to sell his share of the team, as well as the potential backlash of the Penguins fan base. Meanwhile, New York Rangers GM Glen Sather was caught by surprise of reports Lemieux would like to play for his club next season. Sather said he's hasn't contacted Lemieux nor has the Pens owner and captain spoken to him or anyone in his organization.

Spector's Note: My thanks to Stephane Mondou. Mario, you got some 'splaining to dooooo....Until Lemieux speaks up about this, I'm not buying it. But if he does sell his share of the Penguins to play for the Rangers or Flyers, it'll be a huge blow to NHL hockey in Pittsburgh. Essentially, the Penguins will be right back where they were nearly twenty years ago before they drafted Lemieux...a bankrupt organization stocked with minor leaguers and kids playing to empty seats.

Source: Pens giving broadcaster first coaching gig

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Ed Olczyk, a longtime NHL player who became a broadcaster, was hired as the Pittsburgh Penguins' fifth coach in five years despite having no coaching experience, The Associated Press has learned.

The Penguins scheduled a news conference for noon ET Wednesday to make the announcement, a source close to Olczyk said on the condition of anonymity.

Olczyk's hiring mirrors a move early last season by the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche promoted former player and announcer Tony Granato to coach after only a couple of months with the team as an assistant coach.

Olczyk, 36, spent 16 seasons in the NHL as a player, including a brief stay with the Penguins, but his only coaching was with a group of 15- and 16-year-olds in Chicago.

The hiring reflects Penguins general manager Craig Patrick's desire to hire a coach who can relate to and work with the team's younger players. The Penguins have gutted their roster since making the Eastern Conference finals two years ago, trading Jaromir Jagr, Alexei Kovalev, Jan Hrdina and a number of other experienced players in an effort to rebuild with much younger and lower-priced talent.

The Penguins are coming off their worst season since owner-player Mario Lemieux's rookie season in 1984-85, losing all but two of the final 21 games while finishing 27-44-6-5 under former coach Rick Kehoe. He was fired April 15 after the Penguins won only 55 games in two seasons.

Olczyk played for the Maple Leafs, Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets, Rangers, Kings and Penguins during his NHL career, getting 342 goals and 452 assists in 1,031 seasons.

Drafted No. 3 overall by the Blackhawks in 1984, he played three seasons in Chicago before enjoying his best seasons with the Maple Leafs. He had a career-high 42 goals during a 75-point season with Toronto in 1987-88, during a three-season stretch in which he scored 118 goals.

Olczyk returned to Chicago to finish his career with the Blackhawks in the 1999-2000 season, when he had two goals and two assists in 33 games.

Olczyk becomes the latest name on a growing list of broadcasters who move into coaching or manager's jobs, including Granato, and baseball managers Bob Brenly of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Larry Dierker (formerly of the Houston Astros), and Buck Martinez (formerly of the Toronto Blue Jays).

PENGUINS SHOPPING STRAKA?

PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Karen Price reports Penguins forward Martin Straka could be the next high-profile player to leave Pittsburgh. Apparently GM Craig Patrick sent a fax last week around the league informing his fellow GMs shopping Straka, although neither Patrick nor Straka's agent, Rich Winter, would comment. Price claims Straka, the Penguins second highest paid player as well as their second-highest scorer last season, was being shopped at the March trade deadline, but Patrick couldn't find a deal that suited him.

Spector's Note: My thanks to all of you who sent this in. Looks like the firesale of Penguins talent continues. It really is a sad statement on the demise of a once-great team. There's no doubt in my mind the Penguins would still be a perennial Cup contender if they could've held on to Ron Francis, Jaromir Jagr, Robert Lang, Alexei Kovalev and Darius Kasparaitis.

PENGUINS INTERESTED IN SHOPPING THEIR PICK?

PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Karen Price reports the Penguins, who hold the third overall pick in the upcoming June entry draft, may be willing to trade up in the draft in hopes of landing goaltending prospect Marc-Andre Fleury.

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Dejan Kovacevic reports the Florida Panthers are willing to shop the first overall pick to any team that's interested in drafting Fleury. Given their goaltending depth, as well as the amount of young talent already on their roster, they're believed not interested in making a selection. The Carolina Hurricanes apparently covet Fleury and may try to swap picks with the Panthers. Kovacevic reports the Penguins management has been meeting as many of the top prospects as possible, including forwards Nathan Horton and Eric Staal and defenceman Ryan Suter.

Spector's Note: My thanks to "Word" for the Post-Gazette link. Patrick obviously realizes his pick could be very valuable if the Panthers and Hurricanes swap, rather than shop theirs to other clubs. The question facing him then becomes, "does he go with the pick, or deal it for promising, inexpensive talent that can help his roster now?" You make the call...
