Flyers Agree to Terms With Defenseman Joni Pitkanen
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’3”, 202-pound defenseman Joni Pitkanen (YOH-nee PIHT-ka-nuhn) to a three-year entry level contract, according to club General Manager Bob Clarke. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Joni is probably rated as the best young defenseman outside the NHL,” said Clarke in making the announcement. “He was one of the earliest draft picks that we have had in a lot of years. We think that he has a chance to be a terrific player for us. We are hopeful that he can make the Flyers (this season). He has been playing against older players in Finland for the last three years, so he shouldn’t be physically intimidated (as he enters the NHL).”
Pitkanen, 19, recorded five goals and 15 assists for 20 points and 38 penalty minutes in 35 games for Karpat Oulu (Finland) this past season. He also posted six points (1G,5A) in seven games as Finland won their second consecutive bronze medal at the 2003 World Junior Championships, which was held in Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia. Pitkanen received an IIHF Directorate Award as the tournament’s best defenseman.
A native of Oulu, Finland, Pitkanen was selected by the Flyers in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Entering the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, he was ranked first among European prospects on Central Scouting’s final report. Pitkanen was also a member of the bronze medal-winning Team Finland at the 2002 World Junior Championships.
Rock on, and on, and on...
John LeClair breaks down the left wing all alone, moves into the circle and cranks a wicked slap shot with zero hesitation. The baffled goaltender is left with no answers, just questions as the First Union Center's horn blazes and the crowd booms.
...hmm, Pitkanen, Seidenberg, Vandermeer, die Flyers defense wird ganz schön mit jungen Guys aufgefüllt, bleibt nur die Frage wer dann von denen spielt!!

The Flyers took part in a softball game on the evening of Thursday, July 17, with a game against the West Berlin Fire Department. Unfortunately for the Orange and Black, the fire department team was a little too tough for them to handle, as they lost 22-20.
Standouts for the Flyers included a brilliant defensive play by third baseman Chris Therien, and an exciting run down in which Todd Fedoruk scored after the West Berlin players failed to catch the elusive Flyers tough guy.
