Centers Of Attention

Flyers nab two forwards in first round

By Brian Marks, philadelphiaflyers.com

For the first time since 2000, the Flyers selected a forward in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft, which is being held this weekend at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville. In fact, they picked two forwards in the opening round Saturday, using their 11th and 24th overall selections to pick centers Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, respectively.

After taking defensemen the past two years in the first round of the draft, the Flyers chose Carter, a London, Ontario native, with their 11th overall pick. Carter starred the past two seasons for the Sault Ste. Marie, where he tallied 71 points (35G,36A) in 61 games this past year. He is a two-way forward that some have compared to Boston Bruin Joe Thornton. Flyers Assistant Coach Craig Hartsburg actually was Carter’s head coach with the Greyhounds in 2001-02.

“It was unbelievable,” the 6-3, 182-lb. Carter said of his selection. “It’s a great feeling. Philadelphia’s a great team, a great organization and I’m just happy to be a part of it now.”

Clarke said there is no immediate time-table on bringing Carter to the NHL-level, adding that it could be three years before the 18-year-old wears the Orange and Black. Carter will most likely return to his junior team for the 2003-04 season.

“He’s big, he’s got real good skill, he’s got real speed,” Clarke said. “It’s hard to find big guys that can skate like this guy can and handle the puck. He fits in with what we like. The NHL is still a big step, but he’ll be a player for us.”

Richards, 5-11, 187-lbs., has drawn comparisons to former Flyer Mike Ricci. He played a key role on the Kitchener Rangers squad that captured the Memorial Cup last season. Richards tallied 87 points (37G,50A) in 67 games for the 2002-03 season.

“It’s just a great feeling right now. I’m so excited,” Richards said. “My whole game plan is to try and play physical, play with a lot of intensity, game in and game out. That’s what I try to do. I think that will fit in well with Philadelphia.”

“He’s one of those players that does everything,” Clarke said of Richards. “He’ll kill penalties, he’ll block shots, he’ll take faceoffs – he’s just a great young player. Each team has their own opinion of players, but we never felt that he would fall that far in the draft to get to our table.”

Richards says that his Memorial Cup experience, where his two goals and three assists gained him honors on the All-Tournament Team, helped raise awareness of his game.

“It gave the scouts more time to see me and I think it really helped me out,” Richards said.

Due to the trade with Montreal for Eric Chouinard, the Flyers are without a second round pick. But they did have five picks in the third round. There, the Flyers picked center Colin Fraser (69th overall) of the Western Hockey League, right wing Stefan Ruzicka (81) of Slovakia, defenseman Alexandre Picard (85) of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, center Ryan Potulny (87) of the University of Minnesota and right wing Rick Kozak (95) of the Western Hockey League. Rounds four through nine will take place Sunday.

The Florida Panthers originally had the first overall pick in the draft. Before the start, however, they dealt the pick to Pittsburgh, who selected Quebec goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Clarke said the Flyers had the opportunity to move up to that top spot, but the cost was too plenty and would have included younger players he doesn’t want to give up.

“We didn’t come close to dealing that pick,” he said. “We could have, but for us to do anything, it would have been taking young players off our roster for prospects. So, it wasn’t worth it to us.”

DESJARDINS TALKS HIT SNAG.

PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: Tim Panaccio reports contract talks between the Flyers and defenceman Eric Desjardins have hit a snag regarding the length of the deal. The club is offering a two-year contract, but Desjardins wants an extra year. GM Bob Clarke said if things aren't sorted out by next Tuesday, the deadline for unrestricted free agents, Desjardins could be gone. The blueliner's agent, however, remains hopeful a deal can be put in place.

Spector's Note: Gotta wonder if Clarke isn't also looking at the possibility of signing either Derian Hatcher (a Clarke-type player if there ever was one!) or Brian Leetch.

@Rosebud
Entweder man kann es oder eben nicht. Und Leetch kann es nicht! Ausserdem will keiner in Philly ein fucking Blueshirt. Könnten wir ja gleich Scott Stevens verpflichten.

Roger Neilson passes away after battle with cancer

The Flyers family was saddened to learn that on Saturday, June 21, former Flyers head coach Roger Neilson passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 69.
Neilson compiled a record of 76-52-32 over three seasons as head coach of the Flyers from 1997 to 2000. The Hall of Fame coach had spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach of the Ottawa Senators.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 28 in Neilson's hometown of Peterborough, Ontario.

Das ging dann doch verdammt schnell. Super schade. Er war ein echt sympatischer und erfolgreicher Coach. Wünsche seiner Familie das aller Beste!
