Der is auch zimelich angepisst davon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- February 11, 2003 -- GARY Bettman says he is committed to maintaining 30 NHL franchises. Perhaps the commissioner might want to define what he means by "NHL" in the wake of yesterday's trade in which he allowed the Penguins to no more than sell Alex Kovalev, one of the league's elite players, to the Rangers. What was undoubtedly a great day on Broadway made for a terrible day in Pittsburgh and an even worse day on Sixth Avenue, where the NHL headquarters are located. It is impossible to understand how the commissioner could have authorized this transaction, that, from a hockey perspective, is nothing more than a sham of a mockery of a farce. This is what Mario Lemieux came back to save?
Pittsburgh had more of a team and more of a hope when Bill Torrey was running the AHL Hornets prior to the original 1967-68 expansion.
We're told that the Penguins needed the $4 million in cash they obtained from the Rangers in order to make it through the season. That, plus the approximately $1.9M the Penguins gained in the contract exchange will apparently keep them from having to go into bankruptcy for the second time. It's that bad in Pittsburgh, not because of high payroll, but because of impossibly low revenue.
A hard cap, by the way, won't fix that. A hard cap won't get the Penguins - the league's most exorbitant spending team during the glory years of the early '90's, by the way - the new arena it requires in order to make a go of it in the 21st Century.
Bettman allowed this trade to go through even though he stopped the Islanders from completing a similar money-driven deal with the Kings involving Zigmund Palffy during the summer of '99, forcing the teams back to the table until L.A. came up with the package of Olli Jokinen, Josh Green, Matthieu Biron and a first-rounder. What's more, The Post has learned, Bettman recently forbade the Sabres from completing an agreed-upon deal with the Flyers in which Philadelphia would have acquired Miro Satan and Alexei Zhitnik in exchange for Pavel Brendl and defense prospect Jeff Woywitka, the 27th overall selection in the 2001 Entry Draft.
But the commissioner is protecting the league's investment in the Sabres, a team that almost certainly will be forced to relocate this summer unless the NHL wants to continue to run the operation for at least another full season. There's no question the Sabres are a better investment with Satan and Zhitnik than with Brendl and a kid who's never played in the league. It's about franchise value in Buffalo.
It's anybody's guess what it's about in Pittsburgh. It's anybody's guess now whether Bettman will allow the Flames to sell Jarome Iginla. So much of this has to be viewed through the collective-bargaining prism and through the posturing that has dominated the sport this year and will hang over the league next season. Bettman and the hawks he serves undoubtedly will wave the Kovalev flag in an attempt to promote hard cap parity. Again: a hard cap will produce no revenue for the Penguins.
In the early-50's, the NBA had franchises in places like Fort Wayne and Rochester and Tri-Cities. The league outgrew those cities. Yesterday, Bettman admitted that the NHL has outgrown Pittsburgh.
Contraction has begun. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Federov unhappy with Lewis
Fedorov By the time the Denver television reporter approached Sergei Fedorov, the Red Wings center already had talked for several minutes with three writers about his dissatisfaction with the way Detroit coach Dave Lewis is using him. When the TV reporter asked about the frustration generated by the Red Wings' 5-3 loss to the Avalanche, Fedorov didn't even bother to switch to clichéd expressions of "the-team's-the-thing" angst. "I was actually talking to the other guys about my personal things, about not playing a lot and not being used a lot, so what can I say?" Fedorov said quietly. Too painful to watch ____________________________________________ UUUUUUIIIIIIII --------------------------------------------
