New trio of Roenick, Chouinard and Seidenberg effective in 2-2 tie
When you face the team that is tied for the most points in the NHL, you have to make adjustments. Sometimes those adjustments may sound strange. Flyers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock changed things up and moved Dennis Seidenberg up from the defense to the front line Tuesday night, inserting the rookie on a line with speedsters Jeremy Roenick and Eric Chouinard. Seidenberg was sharp as left wing, Roenick scored the game-tying goal and Chouinard chipped in a goal and an assist as the Flyers tied the Senators at the Coral Centre, 2-2.
Forget that Ottawa had lost three of four games coming into this one or that they had played the night before in New York. The Senators were tenacious on the offensive end all night. Fortunately, the Flyers had Roman Cechmanek safe-guarding the net. Cechmanek, who has played well in the last two games, made a season-high 43 saves.
“I think he gave us the point we needed tonight,” Hitchcock said.
Hitchcock was also impressed with Seidenberg as well as Chouinard, who was playing just his third game with the Flyers and in the NHL this season.
“[Chouinard] was fine, Dennis was excellent,” Hitchcock said. “Dennis had all kinds of energy. For a guy who hasn’t played, to come up and play the way he did, that’s a heck of a thing. I think Dennis and Chouinard - it’s a rich game for kids to play in and they did fine.”
The Roenick-Chouinard combo tied the game at 15:59 of the second period, 2-2. As he skated down the right side, Chouinard found a trailing Roenick by banking the puck off the side boards. Roenick took it to the right circle and crushed the puck around Ottawa defenseman Anton Volchenkov and through the legs of Martin Prusek for his team-leading 18th goal of the year.
Cechmanek made nine saves in the third period and three in overtime to secure the tie.
“We gave up a lot,” said Hitchcock, whose team was outshot, 45 to 30. “In the third period, they (Ottawa) just came through us because we were standing still.”
The Flyers got their best chance in overtime when Eric Desjardins rang the post on a clear two-on-one break with Marty Murray with under two minutes to go. The Flyers regained control of the puck, but Keith Primeau missed the net on the ensuing shot before the puck was cleared.
“We got a point, but we didn’t play as well as we’ve played. We played a much better game [against the Islanders on Tuesday],” Hitchcock said. “We didn’t seem to have the energy today.”
Ottawa took the early lead in the first period when two quick Flyers minors gave the Senators a mighty 1:32 two-man advantage and resulted in a Zdeno Chara score. The Flyers were working hard to work off the Ottawa power play when a Daniel Alfredsson shot from high above the left slot kicked off Cechmanek to the right side as the first minor expired. Radek Bonk wound up and put it right back on net. Cechmanek blocked that too, but Chara, in the crease, directed the loose puck around the leg pad of the Flyers goalie for his fifth goal of the year and the 1-0 lead at 6:54.
Chouinard was quick to even up the score as he got his second goal as a Flyer less than two minutes later at 8:38 while on the power play. Kim Johnsson’s shot from the right hash came out to the left. Jeremy Roenick missed the puck with his stick, but Chouinard was right there to back him up, punching the loose puck into the net past Prusek.
Youth contributed to an Ottawa one-goal lead entering the first intermission. For rookie defenseman Jim Vandermeer, it meant a Todd White goal for a 2-1 Ottawa lead at 15:41. Vandermeer lost the puck to Alfredsson at the defensive blue line. The Senator captain skated in hard on Cechmanek, knocking both players down. Cechmanek, however, stacked his pads for a giant save, but the puck ran out to the slot. There, White beat home his 20th goal of the year.
Notes: Marcus Ragnarsson was credited with two assists on Tuesday and three in his last two games after failing to score in his first 12 games as a Flyer…The Flyers returns home for a nationally televised contest with the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon at the First Union Center.

Cardiac tests Sunday were normal, Canadiens spokesman Donald Beauchamp said.
"He is feeling better and resting at home," Beauchamp said.
The 32-year-old Brisebois will be evaluated later in the week.
He had an irregular heartbeat because of stress, Dr. David Mulder, the Canadiens' physician, said Saturday night after Brisebois felt chest pains during warmups before a game against the Maple Leafs.
The Canadiens recalled defenseman Mike Komisarek from Hamilton of the AHL to replace Brisebois. Komisarek was the seventh overall in the 2001 NHL entry draft."

Wenige Tage nach seiner für ihn eher ungewöhnlichen Box-Einlage hat NHL-Superstar Mario Lemieux am Samstag wieder einmal für ein echtes sportliches Highlight gesorgt. Beim 5:2-Sieg seiner Pittsburgh Penguins in Boston gelangen dem 37 Jahre alten Kanadier vor 17.565 Zuschauern im FleetCenter gleich vier Assists. Damit übertraf der in Montreal geborene Center der Penguins als zehnter Spieler überhaupt in der Geschichte der nordamerikanischen Eishockey-Profliga NHL die Marke von 1000. Assists.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks traded defenseman Shawn Heins to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday for a conditional 2003 draft choice. Heins has one assist and nine penalty minutes in 20 games this season as the Sharks' physical seventh defenseman. He has 10 points in 81 career NHL games, but Heins never earned a regular spot in San Jose's defensive rotation since signing with the club as a free agent in 1997.

Ich glaube die schauen erst mal was aus Heins wird bei den Pens. Je mehr Spiele er macht umso mehr können die Sharks später verlangen.

The New York Rangers are not going to go quietly into the night. Six points out of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, the Rangers made a dramatic move to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs picture Monday afternoon. The Rangers traded four players and future considerations to the Pittsburgh Penguins to re-acquire dynamic winger Alexei Kovalev, along with winger Dan Lacouture and defensemen Janne Laukkanen and Mike Wilson.
Heading to Pittsburgh are forwards Rico Fata and Mikael Samuelsson as well as defensemen Joel Bouchard and Richard Lintner, plus future considerations.

With forward Pavel Bure and defenseman Brian Leetch closer to returning to the lineup from the injured list, Rangers President-GM-coach Glen Sather made the move to infuse more offense into his lineup without having to surrender any of his key players.
Faced with budgetary restraints and the fact Kovalev is arbitration eligible this summer, the Penguins traded away a dynamic player in Kovalev, who had scored 27 goals and 37 assists in 54 games this season, second only to Mario Lemieux. He is among the best one-on-one players in the League and will give the Rangers a significant offensive boost.
This will be Kovalev's second stint with New York. He was drafted by the Rangers with the 15th overall selection of the 1991 Entry Draft and played six full seasons with the Rangers and 14 games in 1998-99 before he was traded to the Penguins with Harry York in exchange for Petr Nedved, Chris Tamer and Sean Pronger.
The Penguins receive the underrated Samuelsson, who scored eight goals and 14 assists in 58 games and is a solid defensive player. The other players coming to New York will likely be depth players. Lacouture had two goals and two assists in 44 games for the Penguins, while Laukkanen had a goal and six assists in 17 games as he was sidelined by injury. Wilson had four goals and five assists in 45 games for the Penguins' AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.
The Penguins receive the underrated Samuelsson, who scored eight goals and 14 assists in 58 games and is a solid defensive player. Fata, one of the faster players in the League, had two goals and four assists in 36 games.
Bouchard had been a welcome addition since Leetch went down with an ankle injury over 25 games ago. The former Calgary Flame had netted five goals and seven assists in 27 games. Lintner had scored a goal in 10 games for the Rangers.
