CHICAGO -- Former NHL tough guy Bob Probert is being treated for substance abuse,
the league said Tuesday.
"The doctor believed it was in his best interest,'' NHL spokesman Frank Brown said. "So they placed him in inpatient supervision.''
Probert played 17 seasons in the NHL, the last eight with the Chicago Blackhawks. He also played for the Detroit Red Wings.
"He was a model citizen,'' Blackhawks spokesman Jim Demaria said. "He did everything he had to do in his career and life ... He was doing a real nice job.''
In 61 games with the Blackhawks last season, Probert had one goal, three assists and 176 penalty minutes. In his career he had 163 goals and 384 points. His 3,300 penalty minutes in 935 games rank him fourth on the NHL's all-time penalty minutes list.
Probert joined Chicago's radio broadcast team this season after being unable to catch on with an NHL team. He never officially announced his retirement.
Before joining the Blackhawks, Probert was arrested six times for driving under the influence and convicted of smuggling cocaine across the Canadian border.
Flyers Trade Defenseman Chris McAllister To Colorado For Sixth Round Pick In 2003
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have traded defenseman Chris McAllister to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, according to club President and General Manager Bob Clarke.
“McAllister was not playing for us. With the development of Jim Vandermeer, Chris went from our sixth or seventh defenseman to our seventh or eighth defenseman,” said Clarke in making the announcement. “To keep him sitting without playing wasn’t any good for Chris and certainly wasn’t any good for us. For the good of the team and for the good of Chris, we thought that we would send him somewhere where he can play.”
McAllister, 27, was scoreless with 21 penalty minutes in 19 regular season games for the Flyers this season. He also was scoreless with 12 penalty minutes in four games for the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. The 6’8”, 245-pound defenseman posted nine points (2G,7A) and 258 penalty minutes in 121 regular season games for the Flyers over the last three seasons (2000-01 to 2002-03). He was acquired by the Flyers from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for the rights to Regan Kelly on September 26, 2000.
In parts of six NHL seasons (1997-98 through 2002-03), McAllister has registered four goals and 15 assists for 19 points and 534 penalty minutes in 241 regular season games. He was traded to Toronto by the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Darby Hendrickson on February 16, 1999. He was originally drafted by Vancouver from the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League in the second round (40th overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- The Vancouver Canucks traded left wing Todd Warriner to the Philadelphia Flyers for a conditional draft pick Wednesday.
Warriner had four goals and six assists in 30 games this year. This is his fifth team in nine NHL seasons.
The Canucks acquired Warriner from Phoenix as part of a five-player deal on Dec. 28, 2001.
The 29-year-old Warriner has 63 goals and 85 assists in 434 career NHL games. He was a member of the Canadian team that won a silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics.

DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic is healing slower than expected and won't return to the ice as soon as first thought.
Team officials are acknowledging that Sakic's recovery from a broken foot isn't going quite as quickly as they'd hoped.
That means Sakic could miss another four weeks of action.
Sakic was injured Jan. 20 in a home game against the Dallas Stars when a Sergei Zubov shot hit Sakic's foot. At the time of the injury, Sakic was expected to be sidelined two-to-four weeks.
Sakic has scored 19 goals and tallied 22 assists in 37 games this season. Earlier this season, Sakic missed nine games after spraining his right ankle against Edmonton.

Flyers acquire RW Kapanen from Hurricanes in 4-player deal
------------------------------------------------------------ PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Flyers continued to shuffle their roster Friday by acquiring underachieving right wing Sami Kapanen from the Carolina Hurricanes in a four-player deal.
The Flyers obtained Kapanen from the Hurricanes along with defenseman Ryan Bast for right wing Pavel Brendl and defenseman Bruno St. Jacques.
Kapanen has scored just six goals in 43 games this season after posting five straight seasons with 20 or more goals. The poor first half by the Finnish forward is a reason the defending Eastern Conference champions are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference standings with just 45 points.
The Flyers, currently fourth in the Eastern Conference, have been looking for more scoring up front.
Philadelphia acquired left Eric Chouinard from the Montreal Canadiens on January 29. The Flyers also made a pair of deals on Wednesday, sending seldom-used defenseman Chris McAllister to the Colorado Avalanche for a sixth-round pick in the June draft and acquiring left wing Todd Warriner from the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations.
"We felt with the arrival of (Eric) Chouinard that he would take (Pavel) Brendl's spot in the lineup," Flyers general manager Bobby Clarke said. "We need more scoring up front and Kapanen is a proven scorer and has played the point on the power play. He should be a really good addition to our club. It gives us another top six NHL-proven forward."
In 2001-02, Kapanen set career highs with 27 goals, 42 assists and 69 points in 77 regular season games for the Hurricanes. He also represented Finland in the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, his third Olympics.
This season, the 29-year-old recorded six goals and 12 assists for 18 points and 12 penalty minutes in 43 games for Carolina.
"We're thankful to Sami for all he's done for our team," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said.
In eight NHL seasons, all with the Hartford/Carolina franchise, Kapanen recorded 145 goals and 203 assists for 348 points and 105 penalty minutes in 520 regular season games. He ranks fifth on the franchise's all-time list in assists and has appeared in two All-Star Games.
The Hurricanes are nine points out of a playoff spot, so Friday's trade could be viewed at least in part as a way to pare payroll.
Bast, 27, scored one goal with 68 penalty minutes in 45 games for Lowell, Carolina's American Hockey League affiliate.
Brendl, 21, recorded five goals and seven assists for 12 points and four penalty minutes in 42 games for the Flyers this season.
In 50 career NHL games over the last two seasons, all with the Flyers, the right wing has 13 points and six penalty minutes.
He was acquired in the August 2001 deal that sent Eric Lindros to the New York Rangers.
St. Jacques, 22, was scoreless with two penalty minutes in six games with the Flyers this season.
"Bruno is still developing as an NHL defenseman, but he has a very good chance at playing for the Hurricanes in the near future," Rutherford said. http://www.nhl.com

kannst dich nicht beschweren. kapanen ist auch recht jung. und in nem guten team wie philly wird der auch wieder aufblühen. Und wenn ihr Stanley Cup holen wollt, weil der Trade das einzigst richtige, denn eigentlich sieht man in dem Trade nur Brendl<-->Kapanen, weil St.Jaqcues und der andere nix taugen.

Bruno St. Jacques Talent Analysis : Poise is the hallmark of his game but he looked tentative during the pre-season, which caused his roster spot to slip away. St. Jacques is not an offensive defenseman but he is an accurate passer. He does not shy away from physical play and will stand up for a teammate. He can deliver some nasty-looking hipchecks. St. Jacques also possesses good wheels, although he's no Paul Coffey.
Future At this still-early stage of his career, St. Jacques has the makings of potential second or third pairing defenseman in the NHL. The question is-- how will St. Jacques respond to the trials ahead? He has to work through the disappointment of being demoted to the AHL and play his way back across the street.

Da hat sich der Deal mit Kapanen schon mal ausgezahlt. Sami Kapanen hat heute Nacht den Game Winner gegen die Rangers getroffen. Auch wenn Brendl vielleicht noch jung ist, ich halte den Deal mit Carolina für ein Plusgeschäft für die Flyers. Das macht sie noch mehr zu einem Stanleycup Favoriten!
