Viele hatten ihm den Sprung in die NHL noch nicht zugetraut, aber seit gestern sind die Chancen von Dennis Seidenberg weiter gestiegen. Nachdem sich Verantwortliche der Philadelphia Flyers schon zuvor sehr positiv über ihn geäußert hatten, war sein Debüt ein voller Erfolg. Unter dem neuen Cheftrainer Ken Hitchcock gab es gestern einen 4:1 Erfolg bei den Washington Capitals. Nach einem Assist im ersten Drittel gelang dem Ex-Mannheimer im zweiten Abschnitt in Überzahl das Game Winning Goal. Der starke Simon Gagne konnte ebenfalls einen Treffer und einen Assist verbuchen. Die weiteren Tore für die Flyers, die mindestens bis zum Start der regulären Saison auf Stürmer Mark Recchi wegen einer Verletzung verzichten müssen, erzielten Pavel Brendl und Michal Handzus, während für die Capitals Verteidiger Sergei Gonchar das zwischenzeitliche 1:0 besorgt hatte. Olaf Kölzig spielte in den ersten beiden Dritteln und kassierte dabei drei Gegentore. Im Schlussabschnitt ersetzte ihn Sebastian Charpentier.
Die Montreal Canadiens gewannen ihr Heimspiel gegen die Florida Panthers souverän mit 5:2. Beste Spieler waren dabei zwei Rookies, die jeweils doppelt trafen. Verteidiger Ron Hainsey darf sich nach seinen beiden Toren jetzt noch größere Hoffnungen machen, zum Saisonstart aufzulaufen. Da Sheldon Souray wegen einer Handgelenksverletzung längerfristig ausfällt, hat er aber sowieso gute Chancen nach Andrei Markov, Craig Rivet, Patrice Brisebois, Karl Dykhuis und Stephane Quintal als Nr.6 die Saison zu beginnen. Für Stürmer Jozef Balej wird es dagegen sehr schwierig, da die Habs qualitativ und quantitativ so gut besetzt sind, wie schon seit Jahren nicht. Routinier Yanic Perreault traf ebenfalls für die Canadiens. Für die Panthers, die viele Großchancen zuließen, trugen sich die Rookies Stephen Weiss und Hannes Hyvonen in die Scorerliste ein.
Spieler des Tages war am Donnerstag eindeutig Rookie Justin Papineau. Der Stürmer trug fünf Tore zum 7:2 Erfolg der St.Louis Blues gegen Boston bei. Die Bruins waren zwar vierzig Minuten lang nicht wirklich schlecht, aber im Schlussdrittel kassierten sie gleich vier Treffer, so dass am Ende diese deutliche Pleite zu verzeichnen war. Für die Gastgeber erzielten Keith Tkachuk und Eric Nickulas die weiteren Tore, während Brian Rolston und Michael Grosek für die Bruins zuschlugen.
Ausgerechnet gegen einen ihren ärgsten Rivalen verlor die Colorado Avalanche klar. Nach dem ersten Drittel führten die Gastgeber zwar mit 1:0, aber ab Mitte des zweiten Abschnitts lief bei ihnen nicht mehr viel. Goalie Patrick Roy verließ nach der Hälfte der Spielzeit und nur einem Gegentor das Eis und Rookie Peter Budaj konnte ihn anschließend nicht ersetzten. Die Dallas Stars feierten am Ende einen mehr als komfortablen Sieg. Vier Treffer von Jon Sim, sowie Tore durch Richard Matvichuk, Scott Young und David Gosselin sorgten für einen 7:1 Erfolg der Texaner.
Die drei anderen Partien endeten gestern wie folgt: Chicago Blackhawks - Nashville Predators 3:1, Los Angeles Kings - San Jose Sharks 1:0, Edmonton Oilers - Vancouver Canucks 2:3.

EDMONTON 8, VANCOUVER 5
EDMONTON (Ticker) -- Mike Comrie is in midseason form for the Edmonton Oilers.
Comrie scored three goals, including two during a four-goal third-period outburst, to lead the Oilers to an 8-5 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in their second meeting in as many nights.
After leading the Oilers with 33 goals last season, Comrie picked up right where he left off, netting a power-play tally in the first period before completing the hat trick with two in the third, including an empty-netter with 28 seconds remaining.
Mike York had a goal and three assists while defenseman Janne Niinimaa, Anson Carter and rookie Jarret Stoll each added a goal and an assist for Edmonton, which dropped a 3-2 decision to the Canucks in Winnipeg in Thursday's preseason opener.
Markus Naslund led the way for the Canucks with two goals and an assist. Rookie Tomas Mojzis, who was acquired in an offseason trade with Toronto, notched a goal and an assist.
Defenseman Ed Jovanovski and Brendan Morrison each added two assists for Vancouver, which played without Todd Bertuzzi and the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel.
The start of the game was delayed 45 minutes due to a power outage.
MINNESOTA 1, ANAHEIM 1 (OT)
ANAHEIM (Ticker) -- Rickard Wallin scored a power-play goal with 14:46 remaining in the second period as the Minnesota Wild skated to a 1-1 tie with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Signed as a free agent after playing for Farjestads BK Karlstad of the Swedish Elite League last season, Wallin beat goaltender Dwayne Roloson to tie the game at 1-1.
Mike LeClerc scored on the power play in the opening period for the Mighty Ducks, who played their first game under new coach Mike Babcock.
Roloson went the entire way in goal for the Wild and made 25 saves. Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Martin Gerber split time in goal for Anaheim.
DETROIT 3, DALLAS 1
DALLAS (Ticker) -- Boyd Devereaux had a goal and an assist as the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings started their preseason with a 3-1 victory over the Dallas Stars.
Devereaux's goal at 1:26 into the third period helped to ensure the victory for Detroit. His assist set up an impressive shorthanded goal by Stacy Roest.
With 6:03 remaining in the second period, Roest put his shot between the pads of Marty Turco to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead. It was the first shot faced by Turco, who had come into the game less than a minute earlier.
Jason Arnott's power-play goal put Dallas on the board with 13:49 remaining. Bill Guerin, who was signed as a free agent from the Boston Bruins, assisted on the goal along with Mike Modano.
Ron Tugnutt started in goal for Dallas and held Detroit scoreless until Sean Avery beat him on a feed from Derek King just over six minutes into the second period. Tugnutt stopped 10 of 11 shots.
Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer did not make the trip. Fischer, who had an abnormal EKG reading on September 12, is exepcted to rejoin the team for weekend practices in Detroit.
Sergei Federov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Darren McCarty and Brendan Shanahan also did not play for the Red Wings.
BOSTON 6, WASHINGTON 4
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Ticker) -- Joe Thornton netted two goals in his first preseason action and Martin LaPointe had a goal and three assists as the Boston Bruins defeated the Washington Capitals, 6-4.
After losing the exhibition opener with an inexperienced lineup logging most of the ice time, Thornton and Sergei Samsonov returned to action as four different Bruins recorded at least three points.
Newly acquired defenseman Bryan Berard opened the scoring for Boston with a blast from the point on their second power-play chance of the game. Berard assisted on two other goals.
Samsonov broke a 4-4 tie in the third period with an even-strength goal and assisted on Boston's first two goals in the first period.
Steve Konowalchuk scored 21 seconds into the second period to draw the Capitals within one, then tied it with a goal at 6:18 of the third period.
Washington played without star wingers Peter Bondra and Jaromir Jagr.
COLUMBUS 5, BUFFALO 3
SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- The future of the Columbus Blue Jackets is looking bright.
Andrej Nedorost scored twice and Rick Nash added a goal and an assist as the Blue Jackets defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 5-3, in the preseason opener for both teams.
A 2000 ninth-round pick, Nedorost scored 28 seconds into the game to give Columbus the lead before netting a power-play tally midway through the second period. The 22-year-old native of the Czech Republic also assisted on Geoff Sanderson's power-play goal at 2:10 of the first.
The first overall pick in June, Nash gave the Blue Jackets a 3-0 lead with a power-play tally at 4:56 of the first period. The 18-year-old left wing added an assist on Nedorost's second goal.
Rookie Tim Jackman also scored for Columbus while Andrew Cassels, who was signed as a free agent after spending three seasons with Vancouver, added an assist in his Blue Jackets debut.
Marc Denis stopped 13 of 15 shots for Columbus before giving way to J.F. Labbe, who allowed a goal on 18 shots.
Jochen Hecht, who was acquired from Edmonton in an offseason deal, had a goal and an assist in his first game for the Sabres while Tim Connolly, who grew up in nearby Baldwinsville, had an assist in his return to the Syracuse area.
Columbus defenseman Jamie Allison left the game at 9:09 of the third period with an undisclosed injury.
FLORIDA 3, CAROLINA 0
SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- Roberto Luongo made 29 saves and Peter Worrell and Olli Jokinen each scored power-play goals as the Florida Panthers posted a 3-0 exhibition triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Luongo, who faced many shots from the perimeter, stopped nine in the first period and 10 apiece in the second and third.
Worrell opened the scoring with 5:29 left in the first period by tapping a loose puck between goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier's pads. Matteau doubled Florida's just over a minute into the second.
Rookie Jay Bouwmeester and newcomers Stephane Matteau and Jim Campbell registered assists for Florida, which rebounded from a 5-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
Carolina squandered 10 power-play opportunities, including a 1:51 two-man advantage to start third period. The Hurricanes, who dropped to 0-1 in preseason action, dressed just two of their top 10 scorers from last season, when they reached the Stanley Cup Finals.
OTTAWA 7, TORONTO 1
OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Ed Belfour's debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs did not make people forget about Curtis Joseph.
Anton Volchenkov had a goal and two assists and Daniel Alfredsson and Wade Redden added a goal and an assist apiece to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 7-1 rout of the Maple Leafs in the preseason opener for both teams.
Signed as a free agent to replace Joseph, who joined the Detroit Red Wings, Belfour surrendered three goals on 22 shots in his first game with Toronto. The 37-year-old goaltender spent the last five seasons with the Dallas Stars, whom he led to their only Stanley Cup championship in 1999.
After Mikael Renberg gave Toronto a lead 16 seconds into the contest, Volchenkov, who was selected 21st overall in the 2000 draft, drew Ottawa even 61 seconds later. Redden put the Senators ahead for good at 6:39 with a power-play goal and Alfredsson scored with 39 seconds remaining in the first for a 3-1 lead.
Petr Schastlivy also had a goal and an assist for the Senators, who were eliminated by Toronto in seven games in last season's conference semifinals.
Patrick Lalime went the distance for Ottawa, stopping 26 shots.
Toronto captain Mats Sundin did not play while the Senators were without defensemen Zdeno Chara and Curtis Leschyshyn and center Radek Bonk. Chara and Bonk are out with knee injuries while Leschyshyn missed the game with a foot ailment.
PITTSBURGH 4, NEW JERSEY 4 (OT)
ALBANY, New York (Ticker) -- Hans Jonsson scored a power-play goal with 15:54 remaining in the third period as the Pittsburgh Penguins skated to a 4-4 tie with the New Jersey Devils.
Matt Murley and Randy Robitaille added second-period goals for the Penguins, who played without Mario Lemieux.
Johan Hedberg went the entire way in goal for the Penguins and finished with 26 saves.
Newcomer Oleg Tverdovsky had a goal and an assist for New Jersey, which was playing its first game under new coach Pat Burns, who replaced Kevin Constantine.
Backup Corey Schwab and Scott Clemmensen split time in goal for the Devils.
Defensemen Scott Stevens and Brian Rafalski were among the players that did not dress for New Jersey.
TAMPA BAY 8, ATLANTA 1
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jean-Francois Soucy scored three times as the Tampa Bay Lightning rolled to an 8-1 exhibition victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.
A 2001 eighth-round pick, Soucy played for Montreal in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season, registering three goals and eight assists in 11 games.
Unlikely to garner a roster spot with the Lightning, the 19-year-old Soucy scored each of his first two goals at even strength before completing the hat trick on the power play with 14 seconds remaining in the contest.
Dan Boyle and Vaclav Prospal each added two assists for Tampa Bay, which led 5-0 after two periods.
Dany Heatley, the Calder Trophy winner as the NHL Rookie of the Year last season, scored in the third for Atlanta.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- If the Penguins are lucky, they might get to a point where they are as effective as the NHL's new hurry-up faceoff rule.
Their 4-4 tie with New Jersey at Pepsi Arena in the preseason opener last night was completed in about two hours and five minutes, despite requiring a five-minute overtime.
"It was a fast game," Penguins Coach Rick Kehoe said. "When guys get the hang of this, the game's going to be a lot quicker."
The Penguins got a delay-of-game minor late in the second period for violating the hurry-up faceoff rule.
The Devils didn't score on that power play, but did convert on a man-advantage at 4:14 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead
After Alexander Selivanov pulled the Penguins even at 7:32, defenseman Colin White put the Devils back in front when he converted a Christian Berglund rebound at 13:13.
Just 52 seconds later, the Penguins left former teammate Dave Roche alone in front of Johan Hedberg, and he steered a Joe Hulbig pass into the net.
Left winger Matt Murley, who grew up a few miles from the Pepsi Arena in Troy, N.Y., sparked one of the biggest cheers of the evening when he pulled the Penguins within a goal at 12:16 of the second period.
Oleg Tverdovsky restored New Jersey's two-goal advantage at 14:52, when he beat Hedberg from the right point one second before a hooking penalty against Michal Sivek expired, but Randy Robitaille countered for the Penguins 70 seconds later.
Robitaille curled out from behind the net and threw a harmless-looking backhander past Scott Clemmensen.
Penguins defenseman Hans Jonsson got the tying goal on a five-on-three power play at 4:06 of the third period.
