Game Day Previews/Summaries
FLORIDA PANTHERS PRESEASON GAME NOTES vs. MONTREAL CANADIENS
Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 - 7:30 PM
Bell Centre - Montreal, Quebec

TONIGHT'S GAME: The Florida Panthers open the 2002 preseason schedule against the Montreal Canadiens at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Bell Centre. The Panthers will play a total of seven preseason games before opening the 2002-03 regular season at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, Oct. 10.

LIFETIME SERIES: This is the first all-time meeting between the Panthers and Canadiens in the preseason. The two teams have met 33 times in the regular season with Florida holding a 17-11-5-0 (.591) record against its Eastern Conference opponent. The two teams split their four meetings last regular season, with each team winning a pair of games. Florida and Montreal will meet four times this season, with the first game scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20, at Office Depot Center in Sunrise, Fla.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Panthers play the first of three preseason home games at Office Depot Center, Friday when they host the Carolina Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers play their third game in three days when they play Carolina on Saturday night at TECO Arena in Estero, Fla.

PRESEASON PRECEDENTS: The Panthers have recorded just one winning record in their nine previous preseasons, going 6-2-1 (.722) prior to the 2000-01 season. Preseason records have not however been a good indicator of regular success. The Panthers went 0-4-3 in seven preseason games in 1999, but went on to compile a 43-27-6 (.605) record and finish second in the division with 98 points. Florida was 3-3-2 (.500) in the 1995 preseason before going on to the club's first Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Last year, the Panthers compiled a 2-4-1 (.357) preseason record, with victories over Carolina and Tampa Bay. The Panthers enter tonight's game with a 22-37-12 (.394) record in preseason games. Last year, C Viktor Kozlov and RW Ivan Novoseltsev led the team in preseason scoring with each recording five points. Kozlov tied for the team-lead in goals along with LW Niklas Hagman; both players finished with three goals. Novoseltsev led the Panthers in assists with four and added a goal.

ROOKIE SUCCESS IN HULL: The Panthers captured the title at the fourth annual NHL Rookie Tournament held in Hull, Quebec. Florida came from behind to defeat the Ottawa Senators in a shootout for the championship. Trailing 2-1 in the closing moments of regulation play, Florida pulled its goaltender and with eight seconds remaining LW Josh Olson redirected a LW Toni Koivisto pass to send the game into overtime. Following a scoreless five-minute extra session, the Cats captured the tourney championship scoring on three of four shootout attempts. Ottawa notched just one shootout goal. C Stephen Weiss, D Lukas Krajicek, and Olson each connected in the shootout. Florida finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. Koivisto led the way in the tournament for the Panthers scoring a tournament-high five goals and adding two assists. In all, 13 different Panthers recorded at least one point, with seven players collecting three or more points. Olson and D Jeremy Swanson each had two goals and an assist. The defense was anchored by G Billy Thompson who started all four games and stopped 120 of 128 shots for a .938 save percentage.

O-ZOLINSH: Panthers D Sandis Ozolinsh finished the 2001-02 season as the fifth highest-scoring defenseman in the NHL. In 83 games with Florida and Carolina, Ozolinsh scored 14 goals and 38 assists for 52 points. In his 10-year NHL career, Ozolinsh has scored 141 goals and 324 assists for 465 points. He was voted a starter for the World Team at last season's NHL All-Star Game.

HIGH ALTITUDE: Panthers' training camp will switch locations from Coral Springs, Fla., to Vail, Colo., following Saturday night's preseason game against the Carolina Hurricanes at TECO Arena. The Panthers will travel on Sunday, Sept. 22, and then have on-ice sessions at the John A. Dobson Arena for four straight days before returning to South Florida for a preseason game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday, Sept. 27, at Office Depot Center.

ROOKIE SCORING: The Panthers were one of only two teams in the NHL to have more than one player finish in the top 10 in the league in rookie scorers. LW Kristian Huselius finished third overall in rookie scoring with 45 points on 23 goals and 22 assists, while LW Niklas Hagman finished tied for eighth with 28 points on 10 goals and 18 assists. Huselius set the Panthers franchise record for games played (79) by a rookie and became just the third Panther to win NHL Rookie of the Month (Oct.) honors when he scored nine goals and two assists. Huselius played for Team Melrose in the NHL YoungStars game at All-Star weekend, scoring two goals. Hagman also garnered NHL Rookie of the Month (March) honors by scoring four goals and six assists for 10 points in 14 games.

INTERNATIONAL MEN OF MYSTERY: A number of players from the Panthers organization participate in prestigious international tournaments during 2001-02. RW Valeri Bure (Russia), D Sandis Ozolinsh (Latvia) and D Ivan Majesky (Slovakia) all participated for their home countries during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Six different players in the Panthers organization played in the 2002 World Championships held in Sweden: D Brad Ference (Canada), LW Niklas Hagman (Finland), LW Kristian Huselius (Sweden), C Olli Jokinen (Finland), Ozolinsh (Latvia) and C Adrian Wichser (Switzerland). The Panthers also has six prospects participate in the 2002 World Junior Championships held in the Czech Republic: RW Rob Globke (United States), LW Toni Koivisto (Czech Republic), D Lukas Krajicek (Czech Republic), D Filip Novak (Czech Republic), D Vladimir Sapozhnikov (Russia) and C Stephen Weiss (Canada).

KEENAN NEAR THE TOP: Head coach Mike Keenan will enter the regular season ranked fourth in all-time wins (555) among NHL coaches and ranked fourth in games coached (1,125). Keenan is 137 victories away from Dick Irvin, who is third with 692. Keenan is 324 games away from Irvin, who is in third with 1,449. Keenan's teams have combined for three 50-plus-victory seasons and five 100-plus point seasons, three President's Trophies representing the league's top record and six divisional titles. He has coached teams to four Stanley Cup Finals: with Philadelphia in 1985 and 1987, with Chicago in 1992 and he won the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994 as he brought the Rangers their first championship in 54 years. He won the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach in 1984-85 with Philadelphia and has also coached in three NHL All-Star Games. Keenan has a remarkable playoff record, winning 18 of 28 playoff series and 91 of 160 games. He is ranked fourth all-time in playoff wins (91). Keenan is nine victories away from Irvin, who is in third with 100 career playoff wins.

THE SUNSHINE STATE: Six of the Panthers seven preseason games will be played in the state of Florida. Three of the games are at Office Depot Center, while two games are scheduled for TECO Arena in nearby Estero and one game is slated for St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. The six preseason games in the state marks the most times the Panthers have played in Florida in their preseason history.

MONTREAL--Ron Hainsey and Josef Balej each scored two goals to
lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers
at the Bell Centre on Thursday night in the first preseason game for
each team.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead early in the second period when C
Stephen Weiss scored on a backhand shot from the slot. LW Niklas
Hagman assisted on the goal which came 1:52 into the period. The
Canadiens tied the game with a power play goal less than five minutes
later when Ron Hainsey scored off a wrist shot from the left face-off
circle. Saku Koivu and Yanic Perreault assisted on the goal.

Montreal took the lead 10:33 into the second period when Hainsey
netted his second goal of the game. Hainsey took a pass across the blue
line from Marcel Hossa and fired a slap shot that beat G Roberto
Luongo. Following the goal, both teams changed goaltenders, with G
Wade Flaherty entering the game for Florida and Mathieu Garon
coming in for Montreal.

The Canadiens did not waste much time in extending their lead as
Perreault scored just 19 seconds after Hainsey's second goal to give
Montreal a 3-1 lead. Perreault took a pass in the slot from Joe Juneau,
who was stationed behind the Florida net.

Josef Balej gave Montreal a three-goal lead when he scored 33 seconds
into the third period. Balej finished off a feed in the slot from Patrick
Traverse. He then gave the Canadiens a 5-1 lead when he scored a
breakaway goal less than two minutes later.

The opening period was scoreless in large part because of the solid
goaltending play of Luongo and Jose Theodore. Luongo made nine
saves in the period, including a glove save from his back to thwart a
Montreal three-on-one. Both goaltenders also received a little help
from the posts. Weiss rang a shot off the crossbar just over five minutes
into the game, and then with just under seven minutes remaining in the
period, Mike Ribeiro fired a low slap shot off the far post at the end of
a two-on-one rush for the Canadiens.

Complete stats from tonight's game will be available on
FloridaPanthers.com in the morning...

Coming up tomorrow, the Cats host the Carolina Hurricanes for game
one of a back-to-back series. It will be the team's first game at the
newly re-named Office Depot Center. Players expected to be in the
line-up include Roberto Luongo, Val Bure, Jay Bouwmeester, Dmitry
Yushkevich, Stephane Matteau and Stephen Weiss. There will be no
local TV or radio so get your tickets now!

The final score of Thursday's game in Montreal was erroneously
reported as 5-1 when in effect it was 5-2. Hannes Hyvonen
scored in the final minutes of regulation and the goal was not
reflected in the final tally. We apologize for the confusion.

Panthers 3, Hurricanes 0 - Sept. 20

The Florida Panthers bounced back from Thursday's preseason-opening loss at Montreal with a 3-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in front of 11,344 Friday night at Office Depot Center. Peter Worrell, Olli Jokinen and Niklas Hagman provided the offense, while Roberto Luongo and the Florida penalty-killing units shut down the Hurricanes.

Luongo made 29 saves and the Panthers killed 10 Carolina power plays, including a critical 5-on-3 disadvantage for nearly two minutes to open the third period. The Cats led only 2-0 at the time, but didn't allow a shot on net during the two-man disadvantage.

Worrell came out strong, getting open for four great scoring opportunities in the first period. He finally cashed in on the power play at 14:31 of the first, when Byron Ritchie blasted a shot from the left point and Worrell swept the rebound past goalie Jean-Marc Pelletier. Sandis Ozolinsh notched an assist for his backhand cross-ice pass to Ritchie.

The Cats added to their lead in the second with a goal by Jokinen five seconds into a Panthers power play at 1:18 of the second. Left wing Stephane Matteau found a wide-open Jokinen who one-timed the puck by Pelletier. Rookie defenseman Jay Bouwmeester also assisted.

Carolina looked ready to get back into the game in the opening stages of the third, with Jokinen in the box for hooking and Ritchie beside him for tripping. But Florida's penalty killers allowed nothing.

The Panthers added an insurance goal just 1:10 after Ritchie returned to the ice. Hagman skated in from the right side and beat Pelletier off assists from Jim Campbell and rookie Stephen Weiss.

Florida finished 2-of-7 on the power play and fired 11 shots with the extra man. The Cats killed all 10 power plays against, weathering 12 power-play shots. Pelletier stopped 27 of 30 shots in the loss for Carolina as the Panthers evened their preseason record at 1-1. It was the first preseason contest for the Hurricanes.

The Panthers and Hurricanes will meet again Saturday night at TECO Arena in Estero, Florida at 7:30 p.m. It will be Florida's third game in three nights.

Florida's lineup is expected to include forwards Pierre Dagenais, Ryan Johnson, Scott Kelman, Ivan Novoseltsev, Josh Olson, Byron Ritchie, Joey Tetarenko, Jeff Toms, Peter Worrell, Ryan Jardine, Gaetan Royer and David Morisset. Defensemen include Sven Butenschon, Ivan Majesky, Igor Ulanov, Lance Ward, Brad Ference and Lukas Krajicek. Wade Flaherty and Chris Mason will tend the nets.

Panthers @ Hurricanes - Sept. 21

TONIGHT’S GAME: The Florida Panthers play the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at TECO Arena at 7:30 p.m. It is the third of seven preseason games before the Panthers open the 2002-03 regular season at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, Oct. 10. This is the second of two straight games for the Panthers against the Hurricanes, and third game in the last three days for the Panthers. Florida defeated Carolina, 3-0, last night at Office Depot Center.

LIFETIME SERIES: Florida and Carolina/Hartford have met 40 times in the regular season with Carolina holding a 17-14-9-0 (.548) record against the Panthers. Carolina went 4-0-1 against the Panthers last season. Florida and Carolina will meet five times this season, with the first game scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Office Depot Center in Sunrise, Fla. The two Southeast Division rivals have met 13 times in the preseason; the series is tied at 6-6-1 (.500).

WHAT’S NEXT: Panthers’ training camp will switch locations from Sunrise, Fla., to Vail, Colo., following tonight’s preseason game against the Carolina Hurricanes at TECO Arena. The Panthers will travel to Vail on Sunday, Sept. 22, and then have on-ice sessions at the John A. Dobson Arena for four straight days before returning to South Florida for a preseason game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday, Sept. 27, at Office Depot Center. The two teams then meet again on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa.

RECAPPING LAST NIGHT’S GAME AGAINST CAROLINA: G Roberto Luongo helped lead the Florida Panthers to a 3-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes last night at Office Depot Center. Luongo made 29 saves in recording the shutout. The Panthers converted on 2-of-7 power play chances with LW Peter Worrell and C Olli Jokinen each scoring with the man advantage. LW Niklas Hagman had the other goal for the Panthers, who evened their preseason record to 1-1 with the victory. Worrell opened the scoring 14:31 into the first period off a rebound of a C Byron Ritchie shot from the point. D Sandis Ozolinsh also assisted on the goal. The Panthers extended their lead to 2-0 when Jokinen scored on a one-timer off a nice feed from LW Stephane Matteau. Hagman closed out the scoring when he skated in from the right side and fired a wrist shot that beat Hurricanes goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier. RW Jim Campbell and C Stephen Weiss assisted on the goal. The Panthers outshot the Hurricanes 30-29. Carolina was 0-for-10 on the power play in the game.

WORRELL MAKES PRESENCE FELT: LW Peter Worrell did not dress for Thursday night’s game at Montreal, but made his presence felt last night against Carolina by scoring the game-winning goal and by getting in a second period fight with Jesse Boulerice. Worrell opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 14:31 mark of the first period. He knocked home a rebound of a C Byron Ritchie shot from the point to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

LUONGO BACK TO FORM: After missing the final 13 games of the 2001-02 season with a torn ligament in his right ankle, G Roberto Luongo has bounced back in the preseason. Through two games, Luongo has stopped 42 of 44 shots faced for a .955 save percentage. He made 29 saves in recording the shutout last night against Carolina and stopped 13 of 15 shots in a period and a half of action Thursday night against Montreal. Luongo set career highs last season in wins (16), games played (58), minutes played (3,030) and saves (1,513).

ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION: D Jay Bouwmeester has recorded an assist in each of the first two preseason games. Bouwmeester assisted on RW Hannes Hyvonen’s third period goal on Thursday night at Montreal. Last night against Carolina at Office Depot Center, he assisted on C Olli Jokinen’s second period power play goal. Bouwmeester, who was the top ranked prospect by Central Scouting heading into the 2002 Entry Draft, was selected by Florida with the third overall pick. He played 61 games for Medicine Hat (WHL) last season with 11 goals and 50 assists. He won the fastest skater contest on the Top Prospects Skills Competition on Jan. 31, 2002.

Panthers 2, Hurricanes 3 (OT) - Sept. 21

As if the Florida Panthers didn’t get enough work playing three games in three nights, the Carolina Hurricanes made them work overtime Saturday night at TECO Arena in Estero, Florida. The ‘Canes scored at 3:14 of the overtime on a goal by Bates Battaglia to earn the extra point in the standings.

Battaglia scored on the rebound of a Nikos Tselios shot that was stopped by Panthers goaltender Wade Flaherty, who played well throughout the game, finishing with 40 saves. Battaglia’s goal came just moments after he handed Florida a chance at the win by high sticking Byron Ritchie.

Battaglia’s penalty gave the Panthers a manpower advantage just 39 seconds into the extra session. Ryan Jardine missed just inches wide on a tip attempt and moments later nearly tipped a Sven Butenschon point shot through Carolina netminder Randy Petruk, who made a tough save. But the Hurricanes were able to kill off the penalty and eventually win the game.

Defenseman David Tanabe notched the lone goal of the first period, blasting a slap-shot through Flaherty - who was screened on the play - from the deep slot, while the Canes were on a 4-on-3 power play. Florida’s best chances came on an early power play, but Petruk made three big stops to keep the Panthers off the board. Petruk finished with 28 saves on 30 shots.

Ryan Johnson tied the game in the second during 4-on-4 play, slipping the puck past a sliding Petruk. Jardine set up Johnson’s goal, drawing three Hurricanes toward him and sending the puck to an open space. Johnson used his speed to beat the ‘Canes back and broke in alone on Petruk for the goal. Lukas Krajicek also assisted on the goal.

After killing three straight Carolina power plays, Florida got a chance to take the lead with a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:06 late in the second. But Petruk denied two good chances in front of the net and a falling Pierre Dagenais lunged for a loose puck with the Carolina goalie out of position, but missed just wide. The teams left the ice tied at 1-1 after two periods.

Carolina regained the lead on the power play with just 6:19 to play when Jeff Hereema scored off the rush on the rebound of a Mike Zigomanis shot. But the Cats came right back on a Ritchie goal 1:12 later off a feed from Ivan Novoseltsev. Left wing Peter Worrell, who played his second straight solid game, set up the play and also drew an assist.

Defenseman Igor Ulanov tweaked his knee in the first period and did not return, but he will travel with the team and is expected back on the ice in a couple of days. The Panthers depart for Vail, Colorado on Sunday for five days of high-altitude training. Their next preseason contest will be Friday, Sept. 27 vs. Tampa Bay at Office Depot Center
