remaining in regulation time. Ritchie's goal tied the game with
Carolina at 2-2. The Hurricanes eventually won the game when Bates
Battaglia scored 3:14 into overtime. The Panthers twice came back
from one-goal deficits in the game. Carolina held a 1-0 lead after the
first period, but C Ryan Johnson scored just 1:02 into the second
period to tie the game. RW Ryan Jardine and D Lukas Krajicek

wrist shot that beat Hurricanes goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier. RW
Jim Campbell and C Stephen Weiss assisted on the goal. The
Panthers outshot the Hurricanes 30-29. Carolina was 0-for-10 on the
power play in the game.

RECAPPING PRESEASON GAME 1: Ron Hainsey and Josef Balej
each scored a pair of goals to lead Montreal to a 5-2 victory over the
Panthers at the Bell Centre. C Stephen Weiss opened the scoring with
a goal on a backhand shot from the slot after LW Niklas Hagman
worked the puck out of the corner. The goal, which was Weiss's first
preseason tally after not scoring in four preseason games last year,
came under two minutes into the second period. Montreal then scored
five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead. Hainsey and Balej accounted for
four goals and Yanic Perreault netted the other. RW Hannes Hyvonen
scored off a cross ice feed from LW Stephane Matteau with 1:02
remaining in the third period to cut the Montreal lead to 5-2. D Jay

Luongo has bounced back in the preseason. Through three games,
Luongo has stopped 42 of 44 shots faced for a .955 save percentage. He
made 29 saves in recording the shutout on Sept. 20, against Carolina
and stopped 13 of 15 shots in a period and a half of action against

games. Bouwmeester assisted on RW Hannes Hyvonen's third period
goal in the preseason opener at Montreal on Sept 19. Last Friday
against Carolina at Office Depot Center, he assisted on C Olli
Jokinen's second period power play goal. Bouwmeester, who was the
top ranked prospect by Central Scouting heading into the 2002 Entry
Draft, was selected by Florida with the third overall pick. He played 61

assists. He won the fastest skater contest on the Top Prospects Skills
Competition on Jan. 31, 2002.

of the preseason for the Panthers in the opener against Montreal on
Sept. 19. It was his first preseason goal as a Panther after going four
games last preseason without scoring. Weiss followed it up with an
assist on LW Niklas Hagman's third period goal against Carolina on
Sept. 20. Weiss was the Panthers first choice (fourth overall) in the

PANTHERS LOSE; KEENAN UNHAPPY

The Panthers played uninspired while losing Friday to the Lightning, and coach Mike Keenan wasn't particularly happy with the performances of rookie Stephen Weiss and defenseman Bred Ference.

Keenan said Weiss "didn't compete" after getting hit early in the game and added that Ference "didn't play well and hasn't played well" throughout the preseason. Valeri Bure, playing in his first preseason game, was effective but didn't finish his checks, Keenan said. He called Bure's performance "somewhat inspiring."

The Panthers and goalie Roberto Luongo allowed three third-period goals, including two by Pavel Kubina. Ivan Novoseltsev sat out the third period because of a dislocated left thumb suffered in the second period when he was slashed.

SHVIDKI FINALLY RETURNS

Denis Shvidki, whose work visa was voided when he left the country over the summer, was granted another visa Friday and played in his first exhibition game. A native of Ukraine, Shvidki assisted on Olli Jokinen's first-period goal. ... Mike Santos, the Panthers' director of hockey operations, sent three different contract proposals Monday to Jay Bouwmeester's agent, Bryon Baltimore. Baltimore, Santos said, had not responded. Bouwmeester turned 19 Friday.

Sheldon Keefe scored two goals and an assist and Vaclav Prospal had a

goal and an assist to lead the Tampa Lightning to a 5-2 victory over the

Florida Panthers at St. Pete Times Forum on Saturday night.

The Tampa Bay Lightning jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals

from Keefe and Shane Willis. The Lightning outshot the Panthers 12-5

in the opening period thanks in part to spending 11:48 on the power

play. Keefe opened the scoring 2:43 into the first period when he netted

a goal off a pass from Brad Lukowich. The goal came just one second

after a Panthers' penalty had expired. Willis gave the Lightning a two-

goal lead when he scored a power play goal after collecting a Nolan

Pratt shot that went wide of the net and off the dasher boards. Prospal

assisted on both Tampa Bay goals in the first period.

The Lightning extended its lead to 3-0 at the 3:51 mark of the second

period when Ruslan Fedotenko scored off a two-on-one with Nikita

Alexeev. Brad Richards also assisted on the goal. The Panthers outshot

the Lightning 18-5 in the second period, with C Viktor Kozlov (four

shots) and LW Marcus Nilson (three shots) leading the way for Florida.

Tampa Bay took a 4-0 lead early in the third period when Prospal scored

off a scramble in front of G Wade Flaherty. The assists on the goal

went to Lukowich and Keefe. The Panthers got on the board with a

power play goal from D Branislav Mezei 3:47 into the third period.

Mezei scored on a wrist shot from the point. C Olli Jokinen and D Ivan

Majesky assisted on the goal. Florida cut the Lightning lead to 4-2

when LW Eric Beaudoin scored on a rebound of a Majesky shot from

the point. Nilson had the other assist on the Beaudoin goal.

The Lightning responded with a goal at the 10:36 mark of the third to

extend its lead to 5-2. Keefe netted his second goal of the game when he

knocked home a loose puck in the slot. Jimmie Olvestad and Dan Boyle

assisted on the goal.

Panthers release three more players
Cats are still four over the limit
BY DAVID J. NEAL
dneal@herald.com

Panthers defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich can flip his No. 63 into his usual No. 36 now. The previous Panthers No. 36, right wing pugilist Joey Tetarenko, was sent down to San Antonio on Sunday along with right wing Jim Campbell and goalie Chris Mason.

Along with Saturday's cuts, this slices the Panthers roster to 27. The NHL roster limit is 23. The last cuts could be made after Wednesday and Friday's preseason games.

Saturday, the Panthers sent left wing Ryan Jardine, right wing Gaetan Royer and defensemen Sven Butenschon, Filip Novak and Kyle Rossiter down to San Antonio. Goalie Billy Thompson was returned to his junior team, Prince George of the Western Hockey League.

Tetarenko and Campbell are likely exposures for Friday's NHL waiver draft. The protected lists will be released Wednesday.

''In talking to some of the other general managers, they're surprised by how some of their kids have played,'' Panthers general manager Rick Dudley said. ``That might indicate some bigger names might be left exposed.''

After two and a half years in the minors, injuries opened the door for Tetarenko to spend the last 17 games of the 2000-01 season with the Panthers. Limited in skill, he's willing to hit and drop the gloves when the hockey code requires. Then-Panthers coach Duane Sutter kept him up for the start of the 2001-02 season.

Remarkably, Tetarenko stayed with the Panthers all season despite a dislocated jaw and concussion, a torn retina and back problems. He racked up 123 penalty minutes in 38 games. He also had one point on one goal.

But he was a healthy scratch 27 times last season. Obviously, he was vulnerable to a good camp by prized prospect Denis Shvidki, who was injured throughout last season, and left wing grinder Eric Beaudoin. Both played during the weekend's 5-2 losses to Tampa Bay.

A good camp by Campbell would've also forced Tetarenko further down the depth chart. Campbell was given four preseason games and sometimes put with the best forwards dressed that night. He began most of the games on the right side of rookie center Stephen Weiss, who also isn't having a training camp to remember.

The result: zero goals, one assist, two shots on goal. Obviously, he wasn't regaining the scoring touch he had for two years with St. Louis from 1996-98.

''He had some very good days and some not so good days,'' Dudley said. ``Sometimes, it looked like he would make the team, but in games, it didn't translate the same way.''

With Panthers coach Mike Keenan, you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. You just need a Timex. Campbell got only 6:25 of ice time in Saturday's loss at Tampa.

Speaking of the weekend's games, the results didn't bother Dudley. The team he helped build across the state looked much more cohesive than his current team.

''The emergence of [Branislav] Mezei on defense is incredibly positive sign,'' Dudley said. ``[Defenseman Ivan] Majesky played himself into the future of this hockey team in one training camp.

''Would we liked to have won? Would I liked to have won? Sure,'' he continued. ``But, the last time I looked, we're all still tied for first.''

Panthers deal prospects G Billy Thompson and C Greg Watson to the Ottawa Senators.

SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Rick Dudley
announced today that the club has acquired G Jani Hurme from the
Ottawa Senators in exchange for prospects G Billy Thompson and C
Greg Watson. Hurme has played 48 games in the NHL with the
Ottawa Senators and was a member of the Finnish Olympic team in
2002.

"We had an opportunity to get a young, proven NHL goaltender," said
Dudley. "We felt that at this time because of Ottawa's incredible depth
at goal that this situation would not exist again. They had an asset that
we wanted, and we obviously had assets they wanted. This should be
good for both teams."

Hurme, a 27-year-old native of Turku, Finland, has a 25-14-5 career
record in the NHL while recording a 2.48 goals against average and
five shutouts. Last season, Hurme appeared in 25 games with a 12-9-1
record and three shutouts. He had a 2.48 goals against average while
posting a .907 save percentage. Hurme played three games for Finland
in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City, Utah,
recording a 1-2-0 record and a 3.02 goals against average. Before
appearing in the NHL, Hurme played three seasons in the IHL with the
Detroit Vipers, Indianapolis Ice, Cincinnati Cyclones and Grand
Rapids Griffins. Ottawa originally selected Hurme in the third round
(58th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Thompson was the Panthers seventh choice (fifth round, 136th overall)
in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Watson was the Panthers third choice
(second round, 34th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Both
players were returned to their respective junior teams earlier in training
camp. Thompson plays for Prince George in the WHL, while Watson
plays for Prince Albert in the WHL.

The Florida Panthers continue the preseason against the Boston Bruins
on Wednesday, Oct. 2 in a 7:30 p.m. game at TECO Arena in nearby
Estero, Fla. The Panthers close out the preseason with a home game
against the New York Rangers on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Office
Depot Center. The regular season begins on Thursday, Oct. 10 with a
7:30 p.m. game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Office Depot
Center.

seven preseason games before the Panthers open the 2002-03 regular
season at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, Oct. 10.
This is the second of two preseason games at TECO Arena for the
Panthers. In the previous game at TECO on Sept. 21, Florida lost 3-2 in
overtime to Carolina.

LIFETIME SERIES: Florida and Boston have met 35 times in the
regular season with the series being tied 16-16-3 (.500). The Bruins
swept the Panthers last season winning all four games. Florida and
Boston will meet four times this season, with the first meeting
scheduled to take place on Dec. 21 at the FleetCenter. The two Eastern
Conference teams have met nine previous times in the preseason with
Florida holding a 3-5-1 (.389) record in the series. The Bruins defeated
the Panthers, 4-0, on Sept. 21 at the FleetCenter last preseason. Seven
different players recorded points for Boston in the victory.

WHAT'S NEXT: Florida closes out the preseason by hosting the New
York Rangers on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Office Depot Center.
The Panthers open the regular season at home against the Tampa Bay
Lightning on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Florida then goes on the
road for four straight games before returning to Office Depot Center for
a game against the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday, Oct. 21.

HURME ADDED TO ROSTER: The Panthers acquired G Jani
Hurme yesterday from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for prospects
G Billy Thompson and C Greg Watson. Hurme played 25 games last
season for the Senators and had a 12-9-1 record and three shutouts. He
was the starting goaltender for Finland during the 2002 Winter
Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City. In his NHL career, Hurme has
played 48 games with a 25-14-5 record and a 2.48 goals against
average.

RECAPPING PRESEASON GAME 5: Sheldon Keefe scored two
goals and an assist and Vaclav Prospal had a goal and an assist to lead
the Tampa Lightning to a 5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers at St.
Pete Times Forum on Sept. 28. The Lightning jumped out to a 2-0 first
period lead on goals from Keefe and Shane Willis. The Lightning
outshot the Panthers 12-5 in the opening period thanks in part to
spending 11:48 on the power play. Tampa Bay extending its lead to 3-0
at the 3:51 mark of the second period when Ruslan Fedotenko scored
off a two-on-one with Nikita Alexeev. The Panthers outshot the
Lightning 18-5 in the second period, with C Viktor Kozlov (four
shots) and LW Marcus Nilson (three shots) leading the way for
Florida. Tampa Bay took a 4-0 lead early in the third period when
Prospal scored off a scramble in front of G Wade Flaherty. The
Panthers got on the board with a power play goal from D Branislav
Mezei 3:47 into the third period. Mezei scored his first goal of the
preseason on a wrist shot from the point. C Olli Jokinen and D Ivan
Majesky assisted on the goal. Florida cut the Lightning lead to 4-2
when LW Eric Beaudoin scored on a rebound of a Majesky shot from
the point. Nilson had the other assist on the Beaudoin goal. Keefe
responded with his second goal of the game at the 10:36 mark of the
third to extend the Lightning lead to 5-2.

PLAYING THE BRUINS: The Panthers and Bruins met four times
last season, with Boston winning all four games. RW Valeri Bure led
the Panthers with two points in two games against the Bruins last
season. C Jason Wiemer and D Sandis Ozolinsh both had two points
to tie Bure for the team lead. Glen Murray and Joe Thornton each had
eight points for the Bruins against the Panthers last season. Panthers C
Viktor Kozlov has scored 14 points in 19 career games against Boston.

MAKING THEIR POINT: LW Niklas Hagman and C Olli Jokinen
are tied for the team lead in preseason scoring with three points each.
Hagman has a goal and two assists, while Jokinen has two goals and an
assist. Jokinen is the only Panther who has scored more than once in
the preseason. Hagman is coming off an impressive rookie season in
which he played 78 games and scored 10 goals and 18 assists for 28
points. He was named NHL Rookie of the Month in March after
scoring 10 points in 14 games. He played for Finland in both the 2002
Winter Olympics and the 2002 World Championships, where he was
named to the tournament's All-Star team after tying for eighth in
scoring. Jokinen had 29 points on nine goals and 20 assists last season.
Jokinen also played for Finland in both the 2002 Winter Olympics and
the 2002 World Championships.

SLOVAKIAN DEFENSE: D Ivan Majesky and D Branislav Mezei,
both natives of Slovakia, have played well for the Panthers in the
preseason. Mezei has played four of the five games and scored the
Panthers first goal this past Saturday at Tampa Bay. Majesky has also
played in four of the five games and has two assists. Both helpers came
against the Lightning this past Saturday. The Panthers acquired Mezei
from the New York Islanders on July 3, 2002, in exchange for C Jason
Weimer. Mezei was originally drafted by the Islanders in the first
round (10th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He played 14 games
with the Islanders last season recording two assists, but spent the
majority of the year with Bridgeport (AHL) where he recorded 10
points. Majesky was drafted with the Panthers 12th choice (ninth
round, 267th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He spent the past
two seasons playing for Ilves Tampere in Finland.

0-for-3 and Florida 0-for-5.

Sergei Samsonov and Joe Thornton did not dress for the Bruins
while Valeri Bure got the night off for the Panthers.

Game Day Previews/Summaries
Panthers 0, Bruins 0 - Oct. 2
For the second time in as many trips, the Florida Panthers skated to overtime at TECO Arena in Estero, Florida. Roberto Luongo stopped 23 shots to earn his second preseason shutout as Florida (1-3-1-1) and the Boston Bruins (2-4-1-1) skated to a 0-0 overtime tie.

Boston's Ivan Huml came the closest to snapping the deadlock in the extra session when his wrist shot from the slot was deflected by Luongo, then hit the left post. Florida's Marcus Nilson nearly ended the contest midway through the overtime, off a centering pass from Denis Shvidki, but Steve Shields, who stopped all 29 shots he faced, made a strong pad save for Boston.

Florida held an 18-13 advantage in shots on goal through two periods. Left wing Peter Worrell provided Florida's best scoring chance of the first period, taking a soft pass from Pierre Dagenais and sending a wrist shot on net that Shields stopped. On the very next shift Boston's Mike Knuble was denied from the slot by Luongo. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play in the first period.

In the second, Florida's best scoring chances were thwarted by bouncing pucks. Shvidki couldn't corral a centering pass from Nilson with Shields out of position, and shoveled the puck just wide, during an early second-period power play. Late in the period, Stephane Matteau was sent in on a breakaway, but the bouncing puck prevented him from a chance to score. Matteau had another near miss on a blind backhand shot during a scrum in front of the net on his next shift.

Luongo's biggest stops came in a flurry by the line of Marty McInnis, Jozef Stumpel and Ivan Huml, including a sprawling kick save to keep the game tied. The Cats were 0-for-1 on the power play in the middle session and ended the period just a few seconds into their fourth advantage of the game. Boston did not get a power play in the second.

The scoreless third period was a spirited one, with three scuffles breaking out in an eight-second span. The last two were fights between Eric Beaudoin and Jay Henderson and Peter Worrell and Michal Grosek. Florida out-shot Boston 8-4 in the third. The best scoring chance of the period came on a Nilson redirect of a Shvidki point shot. Stumpel hit the left post for Boston. The Cats finished 0-for-5 on the power play and killed all three Boston advantages.

Florida will return home to Office Depot Center for the preseason finale Friday against the New York Rangers.

TONIGHT'S GAME: The Florida Panthers play the New York
Rangers tonight at Office Depot Center at 7:30 p.m. It is the last of
seven preseason games before the Panthers open the 2002-03 regular
season at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, Oct. 10.
This is the third preseason game at Office Depot Center, with the
Panthers splitting the two previous games. Florida defeated the Carolina
Hurricanes, 3-0, on Sept. 20 and lost to the Lightning, 5-2, on Sept. 27.

LIFETIME SERIES: Florida and the New York Rangers have met 41
times in the regular season with the Panthers holding a 16-20-5 (.451)
record in the series. The Rangers won three of four games against the
Panthers last season. The Panthers and Rangers will meet four times this
season, with the first meeting scheduled for Dec. 28 at Office Depot
Center. This is the first ever preseason meeting between the two Eastern
Conference teams.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Panthers open the regular season at home against
the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Florida then
goes on the road for four straight games before returning to Office
Depot Center for a game against the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday, Oct.
21.

HURME ADDED TO ROSTER: The Panthers acquired G Jani
Hurme on Oct. 1 from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for prospects G
Billy Thompson and C Greg Watson. Hurme played 25 games last
season for the Senators and had a 12-9-1 record and three shutouts. He

Games held in Salt Lake City. In his NHL career, Hurme has played 48
games with a 25-14-5 record and a 2.48 goals against average.

LOUIE, LOUIE: Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo has
two shutouts in four preseason starts. He has a 1-1-1 record with a 1.67
goals against average and a .933 save percentage. Luongo and Manny
Fernandez of the Minnesota Wild are the only two goaltenders with two
shutouts in the preseason. Luongo holds the Panthers single-season
record for shutouts in a season with five during 2000-01. He will enter
the season four shutouts away from John Vanbriesbrouck for the
Panthers career shutout record of 13. Luongo set career highs last season
in wins (16), games played (58), minutes played (3,030) and saves
(1,513) despite missing the final 13 games of the 2001-02 season with a
torn ligament in his right ankle.

RECAPPING PRESEASON GAME 6: G Roberto Luongo made 23
saves for his second shutout of the preseason as the Florida Panthers and
Boston Bruins skated to a 0-0 overtime tie. The Panthers outshot the
Bruins 29-23 in the game, but Luongo and Steve Shields each played
solid to keep the game scoreless. Luongo made six saves in the overtime
period to preserve the shutout. C Viktor Kozlov led the Panthers with
four shots on net, while C Olli Jokinen and LW Peter Worrell each
had three shots. Florida was 0-for-5 on the power play, while Boston

The Panthers claimed RW Petr Tenkrat in the draft and then traded him to Columbus for D Mathieu Biron.

SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Rick Dudley announced
today that the club has acquired D Mathieu Biron from the Columbus Blue
Jackets in exchange for RW Petr Tenkrat. The Panthers claimed Tenkrat
from the Nashville Predators with the third pick in the 2002-03 NHL Waiver
Draft held via conference call today. Biron was claimed by Columbus earlier
in the draft after being left unprotected by the Tampa Bay Lightning. The
Panthers training camp roster is now up to 27 players, which includes LW
Kristian Huselius, who is currently out with a knee injury, and recently
acquired G Jani Hurme.

"He's a very big defenseman who skates well and has good puck skills," said
Dudley of Biron. "Mathieu will play in the NHL; it's only a question of time,
whether it's now or in the future."

Biron split time last season between the Lightning and the Springfield Falcons
(AHL). He played 36 games for Tampa Bay and did not score while
compiling 12 penalty minutes. The 6'6", 220-pound native of Lac St. Charles,
Quebec, played 35 games for Springfield and scored four goals and nine
assists for 13 points. Biron has spent three seasons in the NHL, one with
Tampa Bay and two with the New York Islanders. He has played 110 career
NHL games and has scored four goals and five assists for nine points. Biron
was originally drafted by Los Angeles with the Kings first selection (21st
overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. His brother, Martin, is a goaltender
with the Buffalo Sabres.

The Florida Panthers close out the preseason tonight against the New York
Rangers at 7:30 p.m. at Office Depot Center. The regular season begins on
Thursday, Oct. 10 with a 7:30 p.m. game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at
Office Depot Center.

Game Day Previews/Summaries
Panthers 4, Rangers 5 (OT) - Oct. 4
Eric Lindros scored on a bank shot from behind the goal line with just 1:54 remaining in overtime to lift the New York Rangers (3-2-1-2) over the Florida Panthers (1-3-1-2), 5-4 at Office Depot Center Friday night. The goal capped a hat trick for the leading all-time scorer against Florida, earning the Rangers an extra point.

Florida roared out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, with Olli Jokinen putting the Cats on the board 2:32 into the game. Valeri Bure slipped a pass from the left boards to Denis Shvidki at the front of the net, who pushed the puck toward an open Jokinen. The Florida center backhanded a shot over Mike Richter for a 1-0 lead. Florida scored again 41 seconds later when Marcus Nilson blasted a slapshot through Richter's pads from the left circle.

The Cats scored again at the 10:30 mark of the first on a 5-on-3 power play. Shvidki knifed through the middle of the Rangers defense and unleashed a wrist shot into the top of the net for a 3-0 Florida lead. New York answered on a Lindros tip of a Petr Nedved shot less than two minutes later, cutting the margin to 3-1 at the first intermission.

New York's Matthew Barnaby cut the Florida lead to 3-2 at the 7:54 mark of the second, one-timing a centering pass from Ted Donato over Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo from the front of the crease.

New York looked for the equalizer moments later on a power play, when Viktor Kozlov knocked Brian Leetch's stick in the Rangers' defensive zone. Leetch lost control and Jokinen gathered the loose puck in the slot and scored shorthanded. But the Rangers scored just after the Florida penalty expired when Tom Poti's shot through traffic hit the left post and bounced in. Florida's lead was 4-3 after two periods.

Lindros scored the lone goal of the third on another deflection. Leetch sent a shot through a screen that Lindros got a piece of, tying the game with 15:04 to play, on the power play. New York finished 1-for8 with the advantage, while Florida went 2-for-9.

Richter earned the win with 29 saves on 33 shots. Luongo stopped 26 of 31 for Florida. The Panthers will open the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 10 against Tampa Bay at Office Depot Center.
