Game Day Coach's Comments
Panthers 4, Rangers 5 (OT) - Oct. 4
Florida Panthers Head Coach Mike Keenan:

On the play of Denis Shvidki and Olli Jokinen:

“Yeah, we had a very solid effort and Denis certainly demonstrated that he can play in the league, and he has a great release and a great shot, so that's a big plus for us. Olli played a ton, he played with authority and was very effective at center as well.”

On Roberto Luongo's play:

“Well it wasn't his best effort, that's for sure. You never like to see a number one goaltender play, or give you that type of game at this point, going into the season. Well, he wasn't very confident, that's for sure.”

On playing younger players on the ice late in the third period and in overtime:

“Well, you want to see how they respond and how they're going to respond to a pressure situation. There's no better opportunity to do that than in a game like tonight, giving them a chance to respond to a great deal of responsibility.”

On how the younger players responded:

“I think that was Weiss' best game of the training camp, and I think that Lukas (Krajicek) and Jay (Bouwmeester) held their own, which is a big accomplishment against the experienced, big forwards that they were up against.”

On the competitive nature of tonight's preseason game:

“We start the regular season on Thursday, so it's a good time to get emotional about playing, and it was competitive. That was a definite. There's no question about that. Both teams played hard and they certainly took advantage of the situation around our goal and that's the reason they were able to win the hockey game, or even be in the hockey game.”

On the power play:

“Well, I don't know about the penalties. I'm not sure. Barnaby dove and got a call and Val Bure dove at the other end before that and didn't get a call, so it was a little inconsistent.”

On plans for this week and making cuts:

“Well we won't have to make any decisions. Certainly we'll have to see how the negotiations with the Bouwmeester contract goes, up until Monday at 3:00. Until that time we won't make any decisions regarding our personnel. And as you know, (Mathieu) Biron will be in as well tomorrow. I don't know if he'll be here in time for practice, but he'll be in tomorrow and Hurme should be in as well for tomorrow's practice. So we'll carry the players and make our decisions before the deadline.”

On right wing Ivan Novoseltsev, who has missed the last few games with a dislocated thumb:

“He's fine. He could play, but there was no sense putting him in the game tonight without a regular-season contest. It wasn't worth the chance. This gives him more opportunity to heal.”

Blue Jackets claim Hyvonen off waivers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Columbus Blue Jackets claimed forward Hannes Hyvonen off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Hyvonen had 24 goals and 18 assists in 67 games last season with the Cleveland Barons of the AHL.

Hyvonen, who did not score in six games with San Jose last season, was traded to Florida in July.

The Panthers agree to a three-year contact with their 2002 first round draft pick D Jay Bouwmeester.

SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Rick Dudley
announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a three-year
contract with D Jay Bouwmeester. The 6'4", 220-pound native of
Edmonton, Alberta, was the Panthers first choice (third overall) at the
2002 NHL Entry Draft held this past June in Toronto. As per club
policy, details of the contract were not released.

"Because we've been in the middle of negotiations it's been difficult to
express just how impressed we've been with this young hockey player,"
said Dudley. "He truly is as good a prospect as I've seen in many years.
It will be fun to be associated with this evolving talent."

Bouwmeester, who was the top ranked prospect by Central Scouting
heading into the 2002 Entry Draft, played six games in the preseason
and recorded two assists. He played 61 games for Medicine Hat in the
Western Hockey League last season scoring 11 goals and 50 assists,
while winning the fastest skater contest on the Top Prospects Skills
Competition on Jan. 31, 2002.

The Florida Panthers open the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 10 with
a 7:30 p.m. game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Office Depot
Center. All fans attending "Opening Night presented by Office Depot"
will receive a commemorative pin. Florida then goes on the road for four
straight games before returning to Office Depot Center for a home game
against the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

#35 RE:PANTHERS pre-Season Antworten

It was the best of times

A great hockey game should have wonderful tension, moments of beautiful offense and goaltending sorcery. There should be a lead change or, failing that, a big comeback. Some games are great because of significance, but not all significant games are great.

With those general parameters, here are the Top 10 games in the Panthers' first nine seasons as chosen by David J. Neal, who has covered the Panthers since the franchise's formative days.

1. Panthers 4, Pittsburgh 3

May 30, 1996

Miami Arena

Nothing was missing except overtime. There was the dramatic situation: The Panthers faced elimination in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference final. There were spectacular third-period goals -- the Panthers' Martin Straka (see Top 10 Goals) to put the Panthers up 3-2 and Pittsburgh's Tomas Sandstrom off a Mario Lemieux solo rush around the Panthers to tie it, 3-3. There were key breathtaking stops: By Florida's John Vanbiesbrouck on a Jaromir Jagr partial breakaway with 34.6 seconds left, the other by Florida defenseman Jason Woolley with Lemieux looking at an open net in the second period. Woolley's save came just after Bill Lindsay's goal tied the score 2-2 and pumped life into the slowly deflating Panthers. And, there was a great individual effort by Rob Niedermayer for the game-winner (see Top 10 Goals).

2. Colorado 1, Panthers 0

June 10-11, 1996

Miami Arena

The Panthers needed Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals to stay alive. Colorado wanted it for the Cup. Neither goalie -- Florida's John Vanbiesbrouck nor Colorado's Patrick Roy -- allowed anything in the first 118 shots. Finally, a failed Terry Carkner clear wound up on the stick of Colorado's Uwe Krupp. Krupp put a right point shot inside the far post at 4:31 of the third overtime, 1:06 a.m. in real world time. The Miami Arena crowd threw plastic rats in disheartened frustration. Then, they sent the Panthers off with a standing ovation and applauded the Avalanche as they paraded the Cup around the rink.

3. Colorado 7, Panthers 5

March 3, 1999

National Car Rental Center

Many things you don't see every day all happened in one night: a Pavel Bure hat trick on a shorthanded goal and two power-play goals; Bure playing after suffering what turns out to be a season-ending knee injury; Colorado's Peter Forsberg scoring after being tripped to start a three-goal, three-assist night; Bure taunting Colorado goalie Patrick Roy after his third goal; Colorado's Theo Fleury taunting Panthers fans from his front-row press box seat during Colorado's comeback; and, most of all, the Panthers tying an NHL record by blowing a 5-0 late second-period lead.

4. Panthers 6, Dallas 6

Jan. 12, 1996

Reunion Arena

Weary at the end of a 14-day, seven-game road trip and with two injured goalies, the Panthers are down 6-2. Upon learning starting goalie John Vanbiesbrouck is hurt, captain Brian Skrudland says, ''Let's not give up any more shots.'' The Panthers allow only two more and score three times in the first 10 minutes of the third. Stu Barnes ties the score with 22.3 seconds left on a tap-in set up by Scott Mellanby plowing through the Dallas defense to create a two-on-one.

5. Panthers 5, Detroit 5

Feb. 26, 1999

Joe Louis Arena

Detroit is up 3-1 but can't put the Panthers away during a major penalty or a 1:49 five-on-three. Still, the Wings have a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes. Four goals on four shots, including Pavel Bure making the franchise's first successful penalty shot, put the Panthers ahead 5-4. Panthers defenseman Terry Carkner tries to cover a loose puck with his hand next to the Florida net, then decides to move it. He slides it right to Detroit's Igor Larionov, who scores with 5:14 left. A glove save by Florida's Kirk McLean robs Larionov of an overtime winner. ''It was a loss, then a win, then a tie . . . then a loss and a tie,'' Florida's Paul Laus said.

6. Rangers 3, Panthers 2

April 23, 1997

Madison Square Garden

One of the last blasts of greatness from The Great One. The Panthers, down 2-1 in the series to the Rangers, figure to be fresher than New York's veteran lineup after an overtime game the previous night. But with the Panthers up 1-0 in Game 4, 36-year-old Wayne Gretzky turns the game around in just 6:23 of the second period. Gretzky rips one home from down low, strikes on a two-on-one and, one-on-one with 20-year-old Ed Jovanovski, maneuvers Jovanovski into being a screen for a right circle drive. The natural hat trick is all the scoring the Rangers need.

7. Panthers 4, Chicago 4

Oct. 6, 1993

Chicago Stadium

A grand opening night as far as entertainment. Scott Mellanby's first goal in franchise history gives the Panthers a 1-0 lead, but two Chris Chelios goals put Chicago up 2-1 going into a third-period shootout. Gord Murphy ties the score on the power play but gets a penalty 19 seconds later. Jeremy Roenick gives Chicago a 3-2 lead on the power play. Andrei Lomakin scored on a shifty breakaway move to tie, then Brian Skrudland struck on a rebound to put the Panthers up 4-3 with 6:20 left. But Roenick gets Chicago's fourth power-play goal to salvage something for the city. Earlier that day, the White Sox lost a playoff game, and Michael Jordan announced his first retirement.

8. Panthers 2, Pittsburgh 1

Jan. 29, 1996

Miami Arena

A sellout crowd screamed and gasped when it wasn't breathless from 60 minutes of end-to-end play. The Penguins had only 24 shots but almost all were threatening. Meanwhile, the faster Panthers burned by the ponderous Pens defense. Panthers center Rob Niedermayer helped hold Mario Lemieux pointless and got the winner on a thrilling third-period rush around Pittsburgh defenseman Dmitri Mironov. Best sequence: A Panthers two-on-one just misses, Pittsburgh swings the rebound out for a breakaway that goes wide and the Panthers launch a countering two-on-one that ends with a goalmouth scramble. No goals, but no fans sitting at the whistle, either. Panthers coach Doug MacLean said, ``If you see a better game than that in a season . . . I don't know if you can top it.''

9. Panthers 4, Calgary 3

Oct. 8, 1995

Miami Arena

Could game No. 2 of 82 turn a season around and change a franchise's future? If so, this one did. An opening 4-0 humiliation at New Jersey left prospects for a good season looking as slim as those for a needed new arena. Before the home opener, Scott Mellanby kills a rat scurrying through the locker room, then gets two first-period goals. The Panthers later turn two abysmal turnovers by Calgary's Phil Housley into goals, then hang on for the win. Goalie John Vanbiesbrouck's quip that Mellanby got ''a rat trick'' inspired The Year of the Rat. The Panthers rumbled through the season's first three months. South Florida fell in love with this team, supporting a new publicly funded arena went from political suicide to politically expedient. Thus, what is now Office Depot Center. Without it, the Panthers would be in Nashville.

10. Panthers 2, Tampa Bay 0

Oct. 9, 1993

St. Petersburg ThunderDome

Tampa-St. Pete area fans hated that the Panthers existed, hated that they got such favorable expansion draft rules, hated owner H. Wayne Huizenga over baseball issues and hated that he expansively named the team ''Florida'' instead of ''Miami.'' The Lightning advertised ''come see the Lightning beat Huizenga's Panthers,'' and an NHL-record 27,227 came. But they couldn't beat John Vanbiesbrouck. Vanbiesbrouck stopped all 35 Tampa shots, including a three-on-none in the second period. Florida's Scott Levins scored on a second-period deflection, and Tom Fitzgerald threw in an empty-net goal for the first win in franchise history.

A league of their own
Seven players represent former Soviet Union's influence in NHL
BY DAVID J. NEAL
dneal@herald.com

Joe Rimkus Jr. / Herald Staff

LITTLE MOSCOW: In the Panthers locker room, you're likely to hear plenty of Russian. Ukrainian Denis Shvidki, left, plus Russians Igor Ulanov, Dmitry Yushkevich, Ivan Novoseltsev and Viktor Kozlov are five of the seven native Russian speakers on the team this season.

Thirty years after the Soviet Union demonstrated great hockey wasn't confined to Canadians in the NHL, the Panthers' season could come together or break up in the locker room's Little Moscow.

The Panthers could start the season with five Russians -- center Viktor Kozlov, right wing Valeri Bure, defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich, defenseman Igor Ulanov and right wing Ivan Novoseltsev -- on the roster.

Plus, there's Ukranian right wing Denis Shvidki, who played for Russia in the World Juniors; and Latvian Sandis Ozolinsh, who played for the USSR national team pre-breakup.

Include Ozolinsh and Shvidki and the Russian speakers include the Panthers' top proven goal scorer (Bure); top two established defensemen (Ozolinsh, Yushkevich); No. 1 center (Kozlov); and two top goal-scoring right wing prospects (Novoseltsev, Shvidki).

They're a living timeline from the days when Russians and other former Soviet players were a rarity.

Yushkevich and Ulanov began their pro careers in the Soviet League. Yushkevich recalled that when he came to Philadelphia in 1992, he was lucky there was one other Russian on the roster to guide him. Yushkevich was left as the lone Russian when the Panthers took countryman Andrei Lomakin in the expansion draft.

''Now, there's no secrets coming here,'' Yushkevich said. ``You have to know the language. You have to prepare yourself to play 82 games. You have to be in shape. I think it's much easier now to come over here and play.''

Kozlov began his career in the Russian League with Moscow Dynamo before being drafted at 18 by San Jose. Then, there's Bure, Novoseltsev and Shvidki, who came over to play junior in Canada, just like any Gord or Pierre you care to name.

''It's actually something new,'' Novoseltsev said. ``I've never had so many players from the same country as I am on one team.''

Keeping ears open around the Panthers is to feast on auditory potluck. The French-Canadiens sometimes slip into Frenglish. Just as plentiful is the continual shifting from Russian to English when the Russians carry on multiple conversations.

''Always on the bench, we speak English,'' Novoseltsev said.

``We're not playing on the same line, and we want to make sure the guys understand everything we're saying, so we can do the same [thing].''

Yet, in the midst of saying that, Ulanov had a passing exchange in Russian with Novoseltsev. This season, the Panthers expect Yushkevich and Ulanov to provide leadership, not just for the Russians, but for the many younger players.

''When I was a young guy in Russia, I always looked up to the veteran guys and listened when they told me what to do on the ice and off the ice,'' Yushkevich said.

``I think it's in our blood. You always respect the older players. You recognize they did a lot for hockey. I expect the same things from the young Russian guys.''

This, of course, was unthinkable in 1972, before the Team Canada-USSR Super Series changed hockey forever in North America. Though Canada still celebrates its 4-3-1 series win on Paul Henderson's goal with 34 seconds left in Game 8, the Soviets made the bigger points: their best players were as good as Canada's, and they were better overall at the fundamentals of skating, passing and shooting.

North American eyes and wallets began to open toward Europeans. Irony abounded -- the flagship communist team opens up North American capitalism, and the first to walk through it were the Finns and Swedes none too crazy about the USSR.

It took almost another 15 years before Russians -- and Ukrainians and Latvians and Belarusians and so on -- could eat from the tree they planted. It took the USSR national team, led by Igor Larionov -- backing captain Slava Fetisov's demand that the government follow through on its promise -- to let he and other stars make some NHL cash.

The superstars backed down the superpower government.

Discussing such indomitable will moves Kozlov to emotion rarely heard in his voice.

''All countries have a good side and a bad side,'' Kozlov said. ``I love my country so much because so many bad things have happened in my country -- the Revolution, World War II. My grandparents, they went through lots of bad things. That's why I'm so proud of my country.''

Even so, forced by Russia to choose a citizenship for his born-in-Florida daughter Alexandra, Kozlov says she'll remain an American. It's typical of the modern Russian player.

Ulanov's family spends the offseason in Toronto. Yushkevich, his wife and 5-year-old triplets summer in California. Bure, married to actress Candace Cameron, also is California-bound after the season. He doesn't return to Russia because he never did his military hitch before leaving.

Thirty years ago, they weren't allowed to leave. Now, they don't go home. Funny how things change.

WEARING NEW SWEATERS: Tonight's season-opener will see a number of players making their Florida Panthers debut. New additions making the opening day roster announced on Tuesday, Oct. 8, were D Mathieu Biron, D Jay Bouwmeester, G Jani Hurme, D Ivan Majesky, LW Stephane Matteau, D Branislav Mezei and D Dmitry Yushkevich. Of the eight defensemen to make the roster, five of them have never played for the Panthers, and two of them have never played in the NHL. Both Bouwmeester, who was Florida's first-round (third overall) selection in this year's NHL Entry Draft, and Majesky, who is a 2001 ninth-round selection, will be making their NHL debuts.

SEEING OLD SWEATERS: There are a number of ties in the management between the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning, but the two most visible ties will be on the ice in C Ryan Johnson and D Mathieu Biron. Both players have suited up for the Lightning in the recent past. Johnson played 94 games for Tampa Bay after being traded from the Panthers on March 14, 2000. He was then re-acquired by the Panthers when they traded for him on July 10, 2001. Biron played 36 games for the Lightning last season and was acquired by the Panthers on Oct. 4, 2002. Current Panthers management that all spent time with the Lighting include: General Manager Rick Dudley, Assistant to the General Manager Grant Sonier, Director of Amateur Scouting Scott Luce, Skating and Skills Instructor/Scout Paul Vincent, Strength and Conditioning Coach Chris Reichart and Head Medical Trainer Dave Boyer.

A YOUNG, TALENTED, TALL ORDER: Included on the complete 24-man roster are 11 first-round and five second-round draft selections. The average age on the Panthers roster is 24.5 years old. Seven different countries are represented on the Panthers: Canada (11), Russia (four), Finland (three), Slovakia (two), Sweden (two), Latvia and Ukraine. Seven of the eight defensemen on the roster are 6-foot-3 or taller. Six of the 24 players were born in the 1980s, and two, D Jay Bouwmeester (19) and C Stephen Weiss (19), are still teenagers.

Captainless ship in search of leader
Coach Mike Keenan has decided to open the regular season without naming a captain, the Sun-Sentinel reported Oct. 10. He's not sure if and when he'll name a captain. For now, the team will go with three alternate captains. Again, he's undecided if the players named will wear permanent 'A's' or if he'll rotate every five to ten games. Keenan is prepared to take a wait and see approach. "We're going to let them grow together for a while and see how they emerge," Keenan told the newspaper. "At this point, there's nothing firm. Some people are comfortable with it, some people aren't. We'll just feel our way here and see what we come up with."
