Forsberg cleared to play in first round

DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche center Peter Forsberg has been cleared to play in the NHL playoffs that begin Thursday, a team spokesman said Tuesday.

Forsberg, who has been out all season due to foot injuries, is in the lineup against the Los Angeles Kings, said Hayne Ellis, a Colorado Avalanche spokesman.

Forsberg was projected to be out for four months after having surgery to repair tendons in his left foot on Jan. 10, but returned to the ice about three weeks ago and has been skating with the team.

Forsberg missed 10 months with a variety of injuries.

He had his spleen removed in an emergency operation on May 10, just hours after the Avalanche eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in the second round of the playoffs. In July, he had surgery on both ankles, then additional surgery on his left ankle in Sweden.

The Colorado Avalanche star center will play in Game 1 of the NHL Western Conference playoffs Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings at the Pepsi Center.

Forsberg took contact with the team at practice this morning, skated with the top power play unit and took his share of bumps and hits from teammates in an effort to simulate the playoff hockey he will encounter starting Thursday.

It will mark the first time Forsberg will play since the Avs eliminated the Kings in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals last year. He underwent an emergency splenectomy after that game, but it's never been determined precisely when he suffered the spleen injury.

Forsberg took a leave of absence from the NHL in September and has undergone three ankle surgeries since he last played. His most recent surgery was in January to repair a foot tendon.

Forsberg likely will center the Avs second line with wingers Chris Drury and Steve Reinprecht. Joe Sakic will center the first line, probably with wingers Alex Tanguay and Radim Vrbata.

doch stefan ... es IST sinnvoll .... denn mit so vielen jungen, die noch NIE playoffs gespielt haben alleine, wird das nix. schon als führungsspieler alleine MUSS "PETER DER GROSSE" dabei sein ...
wenn er WIRKLICH soviel muskelmasse zugelegt hat ... hmmmm ... der wird doch nicht .... sich den KINGS-CAPTAIN schnappen wollen? war da nicht was letztes jahr?
