'Hawks lose Sullivan

CHICAGO (Ticker) - The Chicago Blackhawks suffered a major blow in their bid for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs, losing right wing Steve Sullivan to a separated shoulder.
Sullivan, the team's co-leader with a plus-24 rating, will be out indefinitely after colliding with Sergei Brylin in the second period of a 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
According to the team, Sullivan will be evaluated daily.
Having not made the playoffs since 1997, the Blackhawks need him back as soon as possible as they battle for the fourth seed in the Western Conference. Through Wednesday, they were fourth overall with 83 points, two more than Los Angeles and three ahead of Phoenix with 11 games left.
Sullivan is fourth on the team in scoring with 20 goals and 36 assists. Among his goals are eight game-winners and two equalizers.
Last season, Sullivan broke out with 34 goals and 41 assists in his first full year with Chicago. He is in his seventh NHL season, having also played for New Jersey and Toronto.

Und wieder Pittsburgh:

Coyotes D Markov out five weeks with ankle injury*

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The surprising Phoenix Coyotes will be without defenseman Danny Markov at least a month after he suffered a left ankle injury in Sunday's 4-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Markov was checked into the boards with 12:19 left in the second period and did not return. After the Coyotes' eighth straight home win, coach Bob Francis said the injury is serious.
"Danny's not going to be around for a while," Francis added.
"At this point, we're looking at a five-week range."
Markov, 25, is second among Phoenix defensemen in scoring with six goals and 30 assists in 71 games. He is second on the team in assists, hits and average ice time and third in blocked shots.
Markov won a bronze medal with Russia at the Salt Lake City Olympics, where he drew a one-game suspension for confronting an official after a 3-2 semifinal loss to the United States.
After trading away Keith Tkachuk and allowing Jeremy Roenick to sign with Philadelphia as a free agent, Phoenix is tied for sixth in the Western Conference and is just two points behind Los Angeles and San Jose for first place in the Pacific Division.

Rangers' playoff hopes take another hit
ESPN.com news services

Making a desperate push for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the New York Rangers will be without their top player tonight in a crucial game against the rival New York Islanders.

Rangers goaltender Mike Richter will miss tonight's game, and likely Wednesday's game against the Flyers, because of a mild concussion sustained Friday in a 5-2 loss to the Thrashers.

Richter was still feeling headaches Sunday after he took three significant blows to the head before he left Friday's game 2:20 into the first period.

According to a report in Monday's Bergen Record, no one is sure which of them caused the concussion.

In pregame warmups, Richter was run into by teammate Martin Rucinsky and complained of a sore jaw afterward.

"He said he was fine," Rangers coach Ron Low told the newspaper. "He didn't look fine."

Richter convinced Low to let him start, and in the first minute he took a shot off the mask from J.P. Vigier. Then, less than two minutes later, a rising Chris Tamer slap shot from the red line struck him on the right side of the mask, dropping him into the ice and opening a cut on his ear.

Richter skated off on his own, but he felt woozy and had a headache. The headache subsided on Saturday but returned Sunday, so he was told to stay home and not come to practice. "He's devastated right now for the fact that he can't be here for a huge game for the hockey team," Low told the Record. "He wanted to come down here today, but he can't. You don't feel right, so you can't even have a bike ride, yet."

According to the Record, even if Richter feels fine Monday, there's a good chance he won't be cleared for Wednesday's game against Philadelphia because the league concussion guidelines suggest that a player be symptom-free for at least 48 hours before trying any physical activity, such as riding a stationary bicycle. Then, the team must wait to see how his body reacts to that before he plays in a game.

It's out of our control until he feels right," Low told the Record. "He can't practice, can't play, and that's the way it is."

With nine games to go and the Rangers needing a victory tonight, 18-year-old rookie Dan Blackburn will be in net, backed up by emergency minor-league call-up Johan Holmqvist.

The Rangers have lost seven of their last nine games and have dropped into 10th place in the Eastern Conference, three points behind eighth-place Montreal, which still has a game in hand after losing 5-1 in Nashville on Saturday.

Tests find Richter has small skull fracture
ESPN.com news services

The Rangers were in serious danger of not making the playoffs.

Now, that fate seems even more likely for the Blueshirts.

ESPN has learned that Rangers goalie Mike Richter was diagnosed Tuesday with a small, linear fracture in his skull just above his right ear and is out for the rest of the regular season.

The goalie will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Richter, 35, was still feeling headaches Sunday after he took three significant blows to the head before he left Friday's game 2:20 into the first period.

According to a report on Newsday's Web site, the concussion symptoms subsided, but team doctors gave Richter to a CT scan Monday night with the result coming back Tuesday.

"It's still hard to believe," Richter told the newspaper. "I've been hit in the head many, many times and nothing like this has ever happened. It's still sinking in."

The news is just another string of sudden ends for Richter, whose last two seasons were both prematurely ended by torn ligaments in each of his knees.

The Rangers, who are three points out of a playoff spot, will now rely on 18-year-old Dan Blackburn to start the final eight games of the season.

Wild C Hendrickson to miss rest of season with eye injury

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota Wild center Darby Hendrickson will miss the rest of the season after being hit in the left eye by a puck.
Hendrickson, injured in the second period of the Wild's 2-1 loss at Edmonton on Tuesday night, isn't expected to have any permanent loss of sight.
Team doctors told him to wear an eye patch and rest in bed as much as possible over the next two weeks. The regular season ends April 14, and Minnesota won't make the playoffs.
"Right now, I can't really see anything, but I do see floating objects in my eye," said Hendrickson, who flew back to Minnesota on Wednesday. "It's unfortunate that I won't be able to play again this season, but I'm fortunate considering what could have happened." He has nine goals and 15 assists in 68 games this season.

Spielt deswegen jetzt Toni Virta?

Dopita wurde operiert
(12.04.2002)

Carolina D Tanabe suffers broken right wrist, out three weeks

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Carolina Hurricanes defense took another hit Friday, but there was some good news that accompanied it.
Defenseman David Tanabe, who left Game One of the Hurricanes' Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against New Jersey on Wednesday, has a broken bone in his right wrist and will be out three weeks.
Fortunately for Carolina coach Paul Maurice, his decision on finding a replacement for Tanabe in the lineup was made easier when it was announced that veteran defenseman Glen Wesley, who has been sidelined with a separated right shoulder, will return for Game Two on Friday.
Tanabe played the first 20 minutes Wednesday and assisted on Carolina's first goal, but did not return after the intermission. The 21-year-old native of Minnesota appeared in 78 games this season, scoring one goal and adding 15 assists.
Tanabe has two goals and one assist in seven career postseason games.
A veteran of 117 playoff contests, Wesley recorded five goals and 13 assists in 77 games during the regular season. The 33-year old defenseman has been with the Carolina franchise for eight seasons after being acquired from Boston in 1994.
