Center Viktor Kozlov, der seit dem 9. Februar wegen einer Bauchmuskelverletzung pausieren musste, wird nach einem Bericht der Palm Beach Post bis zum Ende der Saison ausfallen, weil er sich einer Operation unterziehen muss. Der Spieler von den Florida Panthers hatte sich bereits am 5. Dezember 2001 gegen Columbus verletzt und trotzdem in 23 weiteren Partien seiner Panthers mitgewirkt.
Kozlov wird die Spielzeit mit 50 Spielen beenden und eine Bilanz von neun Toren und 18 Assists vorweisen können. Die 27 Scorerpunkte sind die kleinste Ausbeute seiner NHL-Karriere.

Montreal's Goalie Jeff Hackett fällt erenut mit einer Schulterverletzung aus. Schon zu Saisonbeginn mußte er 20 Spiele wegen einer Schulterverletzungs aussetzen. Er muß sich einer Operation unterziehen und wird bis zum Saisonende ausfallen.

Boston's Center Joe Thornton hat sich an der Schulter verletzt und fällt auf unbestimmte Zeit aus. Die Ursache der Verletzung ist noch unklar. Er war für drei Spiele gesperrt worden und hätte im nächsten Spiel wieder ins Team zurückkehren können. Stattdessen zog er sich im Training eine Verletzung zu und wartet nun auf die Befunde der Röntgenuntersuchng. Die Bruins haben alle drei Spiele ohne ihn verloren. + + + Und noch einer für die Verletztenliste! Diesmal ist es zur Abwechslung mal wieder ein Spieler der Avalanche. Dan Hinote hat sich an der Schulter verletzt und fällt für 3-4 Wochen aus. Wenn das so weiter geht finden die Play Offs nur noch mit Spielern aus den Farm Teams statt!!

Wenn sich jemand beschweren könnte, dann sind das jawohl Montreal, Pittsburgh und Tampa Bay. Toronto nicht zu vergessen.

Atlanta's Verteidiger Franticek Kaberle fällt wohl längerfristig aus wegen seiner Verletzung die er sich am 1. März zuzog. + + + Wegen seiner Achillessehnenverletzung wird Slava Kozlov für den Rest der Saison für die Sabres ausfallen.
Eric Lindros hat sich im letzten Spiel gegen die Penguins beim Blocken eines Schusses den Fuß verstaucht und fällt kurzfristig aus. + + + Und die nächste Verletzung: Ilya Kovalchuk von den Atlanta Thrashers hat sich an der Schulter verletzt und wird im Krankenhaus näher untersucht. Er prallte mit Shawn Bats von den Islanders zusammen und mußte vom Eis geholfen werden. Er ist mit 29 Torend 52 Punkten der Top Rookie der Liga.

DULUTH, Ga. (AP) - Atlanta Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk, the leading goal scorer among NHL rookies, will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.
The 18-year-old left wing fell awkwardly into the boards - banging his right shoulder - in the second period of Sunday's 6-1 loss to the New York Islanders.
Kovalchuk, the top pick in last year's draft, leads the team and all first-year players with 29 goals. He also ranks second among rookies with 51 points, trailing teammate Dany Heatley by two points.
X-rays taken on his collarbone after the game were negative, but a CT scan Monday revealed a season-ending injury. It was not immediately known if surgery will be required.
The Thrashers, last in the league with 43 points, have 16 games remaining.
Kovalchuk crashed into the end boards when hit by Islanders forward Shawn Bates at 3:39 of the second period.
Last summer, Kovalchuk became the first Russian selected No. 1 overall in the NHL draft. He recently played for his native country in the Salt Lake City Olympics, winning a bronze medal.

Atlantas zweitbester Scorer und mit 29 Toren bester Rookie der Liga, Ilya Kovalchuk, verletzte sich im Sonntagsspiel gegen die New York Islanders an der Schulter schwer, als er zu Beginn des zweiten Drittels mit Shawn Bates zusammenstieß und gegen die Bande prallte. Die im hiesigen Krankenhaus folgenden Durchleuchtung mit einem Röntgengerät brachte keine Aufschlüsse, so dass eine Cernspin-Thomographie am nächsten Tag angesetzt wurde. Durch diese entdeckten die Ärzte, dass das rechte Schlüsselbein aus dem Gelenk gesprungen war. Während einer Vollnarkose renkte ein Chirurg den betroffenen Knochen wieder ein. Obwohl wahrscheinlich kein weiterer Eingriff mehr nötig ist, wird der 18-jährige Russe wegen dieser schmerzhaften Blessur noch bis Saisonende pausieren müssen, denn nur durch Schonung kann das Gelenk wieder die nötige Stabilität erlangen.
Ilya Kovalchuk wurde im letzten NHL Draft zum ersten an Nummer Eins gedrafteten Russen überhaupt, als er von den Atlanta Thrashers gezogen wurde. Sein Talent stellte er bereits mit seinen 51 Punkten in 64 Spielen unter Beweis und rangiert in der franchiseinternen Scorerliste hinter Dan Heatley auf Rang Zwei. Bei den Olympischen Winterspielen in Salt Lake City erreichte er als Mitglied der russischen Auswahl die Bronzemedaille.

Kovalchuk says he can return this year
ATLANTA (AP) - The Thrashers' team doctors and executives said Ilya Kovalchuk could be out six to eight weeks.
Kovalchuk has other ideas.
The rookie forward thinks he can return this year, even if it's only for the final few games.
"Doctors are always pessimistic in their prognosis," Kovalchuk said through an interpreter. "I'm young and I'm healthy. Hopefully I can be back." On Sunday, Thrashers GM Don Waddell said he did not expect Kovalchuk back.
"It's really a 4-to-6-week injury," Waddell said. "But given where we are, there's no need to try and rush it." The leading candidate for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top rookie, Kovalchuk was deemed out for the year after dislocting the joint between the collar bone and the right breast bone in the second period of Atlanta's March 10 game at the New York Islanders.
He collided with Islanders forward Shawn Bates, then stepped on the puck or his stick - he wasn't clear which - and fell to the ice, landing on his right shoulder.
"I knew right away that it was serious because I couldn't move my arm," he said.
The injury could swing the Calder voting in the favor of teammate Dany Heatley. Kovalchuk and Heatley were expected by some to finish 1-2 in the voting. Heatley led Kovalchuk by two points in rookie scoring before Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay had 10 more assists, while Kovalchuk was the top rookie goal scorer with 29, with an eight-goal lead over Heatley.
"I'm very upset at not being able to help my team," said Kovalchuk, his arm in a sling. "I've played 64, 65 games, and it's really up to the (voting) media to decide that." Asked if he would root against Heatley in hopes of winning the Rookie of the Year award, he joked that he would pay Heatley $500 for every goal he scored "as long as it helps the team win." Kovalchuk, the top pick in last year's NHL draft who scored six goals in the NHL YoungStars Game during the All-Star Weekend, said this is his first serious injury.
With 29 goals, he said he would like to get back to try to reach 30, but admitted that might be a longshot. His injury won't require surgery, though he has torn ligaments. Still, it may take some time for him to gain strength after regaining mobility in his right arm.
"Probably by the time I get back I'll only have one or two games left," he said
Rangers forward Dvorak out for season with knee sprain
NEW YORK (AP) - New York Rangers right wing Radek Dvorak is out for the season after spraining his right knee midway through the second period of New York's 3-1 loss to Boston on Wednesday night.
Dvorak collided knee-to-knee with Boston's Gord Murphy at 7:20 of the period. His leg appeared to buckle before he fell to the ice.
"This is a best part of the season, battling for the playoffs," Dvorak said while leaning on crutches. "It's disappointing, for sure, but there's nothing you can do about it." Dvorak, 25, was diagnosed with a Grade 3 sprain of his right medial collateral ligament. Rangers spokesman John Rosasco said Dvorak had likely torn his ACL as well, pending tests Thursday. That could keep Dvorak in rehab for six to seven months.
Dvorak has 17 goals and 20 assists this season. The Rangers had high hopes that Tuesday's acquisition of forward Martin Rucinsky would boost the play of Dvorak and linemate Petr Nedved heading into the playoff stretch. Dvorak, Nedved and Rucinsky are all Czech Republic natives and friends.
The three played well for the first two periods before Dvorak went down.
"It seemed like it was just a matter of time before we scored a goal," Dvorak said. "It's bad luck, you know." Coach Ron Low thought so, too.
"That's really a tough break with Devo," he said. "I think that's about as bad as it gets this time of year. I thought they looked pretty solid out there as a threesome." Dvorak had played in 293 consecutive NHL games before missing three games in late November with a left knee sprain.
Last season, his first full one with the Rangers, Dvorak had 31 goals and 36 assists, both career highs.
Rangers GM Glen Sather, who acquired Rucinsky and 22-year-old Roman Lyashenko from Dallas for Manny Malhotra and Barrett Heisten, wouldn't reveal how his trade plans changed after Dvorak was lost for the season.
"That line looked like it was really going to click," Sather said. "This changes things. We don't have as many options. It makes things much more complicated." He said, "don't even go there," when reporters asked if he was more or less likely to make a blockbuster deal by the March 19 deadline.
"I'm going to continue to see what we can come up with," he said.
The team is also without Mark Messier (shoulder) for the remainder of the regular season.
Eric Lindros, Mike York and Michal Grosek also didn't play against Boston.
But Lindros, who has a bruised foot, and the flu-ridden York and Grosek should all return by Saturday's game against New Jersey.

Straka should be ready for training camp

Martin Straka's injury-plagued season is officially over.
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Tuesday that Straka will miss the rest of the regular season with a broken right tibia. The Penguins, a longshot to make the playoffs, have 13 games remaining entering play on Wednesday.
Straka, the NHL's fourth-leading scorer last year but limited to just 13 games this season, originally suffered the injury on Oct. 28 and was sidelined four months. The tibia was broken again on March 7, even though doctors initially thought it was just a sprained ankle. X-rays eventually confirmed the severity of the injury.
However, the current injury is not as severe as the original one, the Penguins believe. General manager Craig Patrick says Straka should be ready for training camp and will not need additional surgery.
"We just can't take a chance with it," Patrick told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It needs to heal thoroughly. A broken leg takes a year to heal. Some people can come back and play on it and not hurt it again, but it's still not fully healed."
Straka also suffered a broken left orbital bone over his left eye earlier this season

Die Saison 2001-02 dürfte für Martin Straka als eine der dunkelsten in seine Karrierestatistik eingehen. Kurz nach Beginn der Saison am 28. Oktober 2001 hatte sich der Tscheche das rechte Bein gebrochen und wurde mit einer Ausfallzeit von sechs Monaten prognostiziert. Als der Heilungsprozess so gut verlief, bekam Straka am 27. Februar 2002 grünes Licht für ein Comeback. Dies erwies sich jedoch als Fehler.
Bereits im ersten Spiel seiner Rückkehr schied der Stürmer erneut verletzt aus, mit Verdacht auf Bänderdehnung im Knöchel, doch Röntgenaufnahmen in der letzten Woche bestätigten, dass sich Straka das selbe Bein angebrochen hat. Eine Operation ist aber anders als im ersten Fall nicht nötig.
Pittsburgh General Manager Craig Patrick räumte ein, dass es für Straka ein Risiko war so früh den Spielbetrieb aufzunehmen, doch er verwies darauf, dass dies in einigen anderen Fällen schon gut gegangen sei. Der 29-Jährige war letzte Saison mit 95 Scorerpunkten in allen 82 Spielen noch viertbester Scorer der NHL, muss sich heuer aber mit lediglich 13 Einsätzen und dabei erreichten fünf Toren, sowie vier Assists begnügen.

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- The struggling Florida Panthers will be without goaltender Roberto Luongo and right wing Valeri Bure for the rest of the season, the team announced Thursday.
Luongo suffered a torn ligament in his right ankle early in the first period of Monday night's loss to Montreal. He will not require surgery and is expected to begin rehabilitation immediately.
Bure underwent surgery Monday to repair cartilage damage in his right knee and will begin rehabilitation in a few weeks.
A former first-round draft pick, Luongo was 16-33-4 with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage in 58 games.
Bure, who suffered the injury on March 17 with Ottawa, also missed 37 games earlier this season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on the same knee. The younger brother of recently traded sniper Pavel Bure, Valeri Bure had just eight goals and 10 assists in 31 games.
"It is disappointing that neither player will be able to return this season," general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "But it's good news that both injuries are minor and the long-term prognosis is great for both Roberto and Val."
Florida recalled goaltender Wade Flaherty and right wing Rocky Thompson from Utah of the American Hockey League to fill the roster spots.
The Panthers are struggling through another disappointing and are next-to-last in the Eastern Conference at 19-38-7-5.
