AVALANCHE ACQUIRES DEFENSEMAN DARIUS KASPARAITIS
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced Tuesday afternoon that the team has acquired defenseman Darius Kasparaitis from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“We are excited to announce this acquisition to our fans today,” said Colorado Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix. “Darius Kasparaitis brings us a strong physical presence in the defensive zone and extends the depth of our defensive corps.”

In return for his services, Pittsburgh acquires forward Ville Nieminen and defenseman Rick Berry.

“The depth of young talent in our organization at all levels allows us the capability to go ahead and make such a move for the present,” added Lacroix. “It certainly would not have been possible without the great work of our scouting staff over the last few years.”

Originally the New York Islanders first choice (fifth overall) in the 1992 Entry Draft, Kasparaitis has career totals of 21 goals, 108 assists, and 1,100 penalty minutes in 637 career games. He is one of only three players to see action in all 69 of Pittsburgh’s games in 2001-02, posting totals of two goals and 12 assists while leading the Penguins with 123 penalty minutes in that span.

A native of Elektrenai, Lithuania, the 29-year-old rearguard is expected to join his new teammates in time for tonight’s game versus the Washington Capitals at Pepsi Center. Kasparaitis will wear sweater #11 with the Avalanche; Pascal Trepanier will now wear sweater #3.

Canadiens shore up goalkeeping chores with Fiset

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

MONTREAL -- The Canadiens acquired goaltender Stephane Fiset from the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

Fiset, 31, posted a 7-7-6 record with a 3.13 goals-against-average playing in 23 games for the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League (AHL) after being assigned to Manchester by the Kings on Oct. 2.

The 6-1, 215-pound native of Montreal has appeared in 388 career NHL games with the Kings and Colorado Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques with a 164-152-44 record and a 3.06 goals-against-average with 16 shutouts.

Islanders swing two deals, acquiring Van Impe, Roche
The New York Islanders obtained defenseman Darren Van Impe from the Florida Panthers and re-acquiring left wing Dave Roche from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Van Impe came for a 2003 fifth-round draft pick and will be reunited with coach Peter Laviolette, who was an assistant with Boston when the 31-year-old played there last season.

The 6-1, 205-pound Van Impe started this season with the New York Rangers but was claimed off waivers by the Panthers in December. In 53 games, he has two goals, six assists and a plus-6 rating.

Roche, 26, started the season with the Islanders but was traded to Anaheim for enforcer Jim Cummins. The 6-4, 230-pound Roche has spent all but one game in the American Hockey League this season.

Going to Anaheim are right wing Ben Guite and 20-year-old Swedish prospect Bjorn Melin.

Guite, 23, is in his second professional season after playing collegiately at Maine. He is second among AHL rookies with a plus-15 rating and has 12 goals and 18 assists in 68 games with Bridgeport.

Melin is a 1999 sixth-round draft pick who has spent his entire career in Sweden.

Bruins pick up Sean Brown from Oilers
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Sean Brown was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to Boston on Tuesday, giving the Bruins another big defenseman.

The Oilers received prospect Bobby Allen, a defenseman.

The 25-year-old Brown had become a sixth or seventh defenseman for the Oilers and general manager Kevin Lowe said that made him expendable.

Brown, 6-foot-3, provides a physical presence. He joins a group of defenseman that already includes 6-7 Hal Gill, 6-4 Kyle McLaren and 6-3 Sean O'Donnell.

"We know Sean well as we were the team that drafted him," Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell said. "He's big and tough, he's a good skater and he gives us a little more bite in front of the net."

Brown had six goals and four assists and 127 penalty minutes in 61 games with the Oilers this season. He is to make $625,000 this year.

Brown originally was acquired from Boston in 1996 along with winger Mariusz Czerkawski and a first-round pick for goalie Bill Ranford.

The 23-year-old Allen had five goals and 10 assists in 49 games with the AHL's Providence Bruins this season. He led Boston College to the NCAA championship last season. He was a second-round pick of the Bruins in the 1998 draft.

Wild, Bruins exchange minor leaguers
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild acquired left wing Greg Crozier from the Boston Bruins for left wing Darryl Laplante, the team announced Tuesday.

Crozier, 25, has 11 points in 54 games this season for the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. He was an AHL All Star in 2000-01 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, a Pittsburgh affiliate. He will be assigned to the Wild's affiliate Houston Aeros.

Laplante, originally acquired from the Detroit Red Wings in the 2000 expansion draft, has 17 points in 31 games for the Aeros this season.

@Mainpirat:
