Nur noch ein Sieg fehlt den New Jersey Devils nach dem gestrigen 3-0 Triumph im Fleet Center zu Boston um mit einem 'Sweep' in die nächste Runde einzuziehen. Gestern Abend scheiterten die Boston Bruins hauptsächlich an Devils' Schlussmann Martin Brodeur, der sich mit 29 Retungstaten seinen 14 Playoff-Shutout verdiente. "Es ist als würde man gegen eine Wand spielen," konstatierte nach der Partie Bostons Stürmer Mike Knuble und bezog dies nicht nur auf die herausragende Torhütervorstellung bei den Gästen.
Die Devils, einem Spitzenteam würdig, zeigten nicht allein in der Defensive Konsequenz, auch im Abschluss waren sie zur rechten Zeit parat. Teamkapitän Scott Stevens(22.) zog vom linken Bullykreis ab und der Puck ging durch Freund und Feind vorbei zum 1-0 ins Netz. Jeff Hackett im Tor der Hausherren war hierbei die Sicht versperrt.
Für die Vorentscheidung sorgte Jay Pandolfo(53.) acht Minuten vor Spielende mit dem 2-0, als er die Scheibe über den bereits auf dem Eis liegenden Hackett bugsierte. An beiden Toren war John Madden(59.en), dem das 'Empty Net Goal' zum Endstand gelang, mit einem Assist beteiligt.

Die Edmonton Oilers gewannen heute Nacht auf eigenem Eis den Playoffkrimi gegen die Dallas Stars und liegen nun überraschend mit 2-1 Siegen gegen die Texaner in Front.
Radek Dvorak(46.) avancierte mit dem 3-2 Siegtor eine knappe Viertelstunde vor Spielende zum Matchwinner für die Westkanadier, die in den folgenden Minuten mit viel Glück und Geschick ihren Vorsprung verteidigen konnten.
In den ersten zwei Durchgängen waren die Gäste aus Dallas den Oilers in allen Belangen überlegen gewesen, kamen aber nur durch Jason Arnott(11.pp) zu einer knappen 1-0 Führung.
In den ersten Minuten nach der zweiten Pause lieferten sich die Kontrahenten einen wilden, offenen Schlagabtausch aus dem die Hausherren als Sieger hervorgingen. Georges Laraque(43.), Fernando Pisani(45.) und Dvorak bezwangen Gästetorwart Marty Turco binnen 187 Sekunden gleich drei Mal, während Dallas nur noch einmal Tommy Salo mit dem 2-1 von Jere Lehtinen(44.) überwinden konnte.

Play-Off: Devils fast in Runde zwei

Eine makellose Serie im nordamerikanischen Eishockey-Oberhaus: Die New Jersey Devils um ihren Top-Torhüter Martin Brodeur stehen nach dem 3:0-Sieg gegen die Boston Bruins mit einem Bein in der zweiten Play-Off-Runde der NHL (Stand 3:0).

In der "Best-of-seven"-Serie gingen am gleichen Abend die Edmonton Oilers mit 2:1 in Führung - nach einem umkämpften 3:2-Sieg gegen die Dallas Stars.

In beiden Partien standen die Torhüter im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Tommy Salo zeichnete sich für Edmonton durch 30 Paraden (Saves) aus und sicherte den Gastgebern vor 16.839 Zuschauern den Sieg. Die größte Tat: Beim Durchbruch des Texaners Jere Lehtinen landete der Puck 13 Minuten vor Schluss in Tommy Salos Handschuh.

Jason Arnott und Lehtinen brachten Dallas jeweils 1:0 und 2:1 in Führung. Georges Laraque und Fernando Pisani glichen jeweils im ereignisreichen dritten Drittel aus. Als Schütze des Siegtreffers für Edmonton ließ sich Neuzugang Radek Dvorak mit seinem vierten Treffer für die Kanadier feiern. Dvorak war erst am 11. März durch eine spektakuläre Transfer-Aktion von den New York Rangers zu den Oilers gewechselt.

New Jersey baut auf die Defensive

Die New Jersey Devils haben aus der bitteren Erfahrung des vergangenen Jahres gelernt - seinerzeit waren die "Teufel" in der ersten Play-off-Runde ins offene Messer gelaufen und ausgeschieden. Diesmal agierte das Profi-Team um Head Coach Pat Burns vorsichtiger - die Defensive stand sicher. Falls die Bruins mal durchbrachen, war der kanadische "Goalie" und Olympiasieger Martin Brodeur zur Stelle (29 Saves). "Meine Vorderleute haben heute einen tollen Job gemacht", lobte Brodeur.

Nach dem an Höhepunkten armen ersten Drittel schlug Scott Stevens im zweiten Durchgang zum ersten Mal für die Devils zu. Jay Pandolfo und John Madden mit einem "Empty-net-goal" machten den 3:0-Sieg für New Jersey vor 15.759 Zuschauern im Fleet Venter von Boston perfekt.

EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The trade that was supposed to signal the end of the Edmonton Oilers' pursuit of a playoff berth helped put them ahead in their Western Conference quarterfinal series.
Radek Dvorak scored a highlight reel goal with 14:22 remaining to cap a rare third-period comeback by the Oilers, who grabbed a two games to one lead in the first-round series with a 3-2 triumph over the Dallas Stars.
At the March 11 trade deadline, Edmonton sent leading scorer Anson Carter to the New York Rangers in a four-player deal that landed Dvorak and defenseman Cory Cross. Dvorak scored four goals in 12 games down the stretch, but his first playoff tally in seven years made the trade worth it.
Just 58 seconds after Fernando Pisani lifted the Oilers into a 2-2 tie, Dvorak brought the puck over the Dallas blue line, put it between the skates of veteran defenseman Richard Matvichuk as he moved through the right faceoff circle, then wristed a shot over the stick of goaltender Marty Turco.
Dvorak's only other playoff goal came in 1996 for the Florida Panthers.
Only two teams had fewer wins than Edmonton when trailing after two periods during the regular season. And Dallas lost just once in 42 games when taking a lead into the third. But Georges Laraque started the Oilers' comeback at 2:33.
Tommy Salo made 30 saves for Edmonton but none bigger than his glove stop on Jere Lehtinen, who broke free down the slot with just under 13 minutes to play. It protected the home-ice advantage the Oilers stole with a win in the series opener.
Game Four is Tuesday in Edmonton.

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Shutting down the Boston Bruins' top scorers was not enough for New Jersey Devils' linemates Jay Pandolfo and John Madden.
Pandolfo and Madden figured in all three goals and Martin Brodeur recorded his 14th career playoff shutout as the Devils took a three games to none lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with a 3-0 blanking of the Bruins.
Pandolfo and Madden have held Joe Thornton and Glen Murray to one goal in the best-of-seven series after the duo combined for 80 during the regular season. And they got downright offensive to put New Jersey one win from a trip to the second round.
"That's playoff hockey," Madden said. "You can't rely on one or two lines to get the job done. When you're on the ice in the offensive zone, you gotta get to the net and score goals. We've done that all year long."
A Boston-area native, Pandolfo sent Bruins defenseman Ian Moran into goaltender Jeff Hackett just as defenseman Scott Stevens scored the only goal Brodeur needed early in the second period.
Pandolfo added an insurance tally with eight minutes to play and set up Madden's empty-netter.
"I've always enjoyed coming back here during the regular season," said Pandolfo, who starred at Boston University. "But this was my first time facing them in the playoffs, and it means that much more."
Brodeur made seven saves in the first period and 11 in each of the last two, extending his shutout streak to 86 minutes, 1 second.
"They tried to create traffic and tried shooting the puck and going to the net," said Brodeur, who made his 107th consecutive postseason start. "I was able to control my rebounds pretty good. There was a few of them I let go, but I think my players in front of me did a great job."
Jeff Hackett made his first start of the series and stopped 19 shots for Boston, which fell to 6-12 at home in the playoffs since 1995. Only one Eastern Conference team scored more goals during the regular season than the Bruins, who have three in this series.
"I think we have a pretty good offensive team here and they've shut us down so far," Murray said. "It's plain and simple. We have to get some kind of attack going and get in front of them and score on the power play. That's what it takes to win in the playoffs."
Boston hosts Game Four on Tuesday.
"We need to win four, they need to win one," Thornton said. "So it's just day-by-day now. ... Obviously, when things don't go good, you're frustrated. And when you don't win, you're frustrated. So it's tough right now."
After managing just one shot in the first 12 minutes of the game, New Jersey grabbed the lead 71 seconds into the second period.
Madden won a faceoff from Thornton in the left circle and sent the puck back to Stevens at the point. As the Devils' captain let go a shot, Pandolfo eased Moran into Hackett, who was helpless to stop the slapper.
"I got knocked and I didn't see the puck," Hackett admitted. "I thought it was interference, but I guess it was our player who hit into me. I don't know if he got pushed into me or what, but I wasn't able to keep the position that I wanted. Otherwise, there's no way that goal goes in."
After New Jersey squandered a 22-second two-man advantage, Boston's Dan McGillis lumbered in alone on Brodeur, who gloved the defenseman's shot. Moments later, Brodeur denied Thornton on a wraparound.
The Bruins went on the power play late in the second, but the Devils had the best scoring chances. On a breakaway, Madden outwaited Hackett but put a shot off the left goalpost.
Two minutes into the third period, Brodeur stopped P.J.
Axelsson's wrist shot from the right circle and momentarily lost the rebound. But he recovered in time to make a glove save.
"I just kind of saw a little black spot over there, so I figured it was the puck," Brodeur said. "I just kind of moved towards it and he shot it right into my glove."
Brodeur's last big save came with 11:49 remaining when he lunged and snared defenseman Don Sweeney's left point shot through traffic.
"He's just in the right spot at the right times and he makes you make the perfect shot to beat him," Bruins left wing Mike Knuble said. "He's not going to beat himself. He's always going to be in the right spot."
Pandolfo gave Brodeur some breathing room when he beat McGillis to the puck at the top of the right circle, skated to the net and flipped a backhander over Hackett's left pad. It was his third career playoff goal and first since Game Two of the 2001 conference finals.
"To contribute, obviously, it's a lot more fun," Pandolfo said.
"Obviously, I have a role here as a defensive player. But to chip in once and a while with a goal, it's big. Especially where I grew up and in front of my family and friends, it means so much more."
Pandolfo had a chance for a second goal but passed to Madden for the empty-netter.
