A difference of opinions apparently has led to the departure of the Port Huron Beacons' coach.
General manager Kevin Carr said Friday that he and coach Rick Hayward agreed Thursday night the United Hockey League expansion team would be better off with a new coach.
Carr hired former Binghamton (N.Y) Icemen coach Brad Jones to replace him.
"It was a very tough decision," said Carr, who said he had been weighing a change for the past few weeks. "I consider Rick a very, very good friend; we've been through a lot the last eight months and he's a great individual and I have the highest respect for him. I wish he could have stayed aboard."
Hayward, 36, could not be reached for comment.
This was Hayward's first coaching job. He had a 15-year playing career in professional hockey, mostly in the American and International leagues. He retired after the 2000-01 season.
Jones coached the Icemen the past four seasons, compiling a 156-111-29 record.
A native of Sterling Heights, Jones was en route to Michigan on Friday.
"I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to the challenge," he said. "It's the second week of August and there's a lot of work to be done."
