Nachdem ja Montreal vs. Boston zu einem Krieg auf dem Eis und einem Krieg der Worte geworden ist, geht es bei der Toronto - New York - Serie nicht weniger zur Sache.
Angefangen hat der Krieg, als die Leafs in Spiel 5 der Serie zwei Key-Players der Islanders vermutlich für den Rest der Saison auf Eis gelegt haben. Michael Peca fällt mit einer Innenband-Verletzung für 6-9 Monate aus und der Top-Defender der Isles Kenny Jonsson fällt mit einer Gehirnerschütterung auch länger aus.
Der GM der Isles, Mike Milbury, ist natürlich fuchsteufelswild:
"Is it common to ram a guy's head, face-first, into the glass from a running start from the blue line?" Milbury asked, his voice rising. "Is it common to duck down on a late hit after a simple clearing play to aim at a guy's knees after you've talked about it?
"That's not playoff hockey," he said. "That's not hockey at all. That's thuggery."
Wie auch immer, die Liga wird nach eigenen Angaben keine weiteren Massnahmen gegen die beiden Übeltäter unternehmen. Wer aber gestern das Avs-Game auf premiere gesehen, der hat auch diese beiden Checks gesehen, und die waren wirklich von der übleren Sorte...
Die Reaktion der Leafs ist verständlich, sie halten sich für unschuldig. Darcy Tucker, der für seinen Check an Jonsson mit einer 5-Minuten-Strafe bestraft wurde, mit folgenden, beeindruckenden Worten:
"I was just finishing my check," Tucker said in Toronto. "I don't know what the big hoopla is about. ... What happened to the old part of the game where the hip check was part of hockey? Is that gone now? Is that gone because you're not allowed to hit anybody anymore?
"You can't take the physicality out of a hockey game. That's what makes our game great -- that you can go out there and play physical. Old-time hockey, that's what hockey was about."
Auch noch ein geiler Spruch von Milbury:
"It's a useless exercise," he said. "Really, if we wanted to get revenge we should have taken out the tomahawk last night when it was 6-3. We didn't do that and I'm glad we didn't do that.
"If we waste energy and focus trying to 'get even' we wind up in the penalty box or out of position and you do the exact opposite of what you want -- play without discipline."

Desweitern regt sich Milbury darüber auf, dass Tucker sein Foul quasi angekündigt hatte:
Peca said before Game 5 that Tucker and the Leafs say things like, "I'll kill you" and threaten to take guys out. Peca called it "comical" at the time.
"It's not so comical anymore," Milbury said. "I guess he was true to his word."
Anders als bei Montreal haben die Isles allerdings keine Rache geschworen, sondern sie wollen sich auf das Spiel konzentrieren, weil sie es gewinnen müssen, um nicht auszuscheiden.
Dave Scatchard added: "You want to get even, but we have a game to win. We're angry, but we have to focus and harness that in the right direction. We need to go out and play with all our hearts because it could be our last game and we don't want that."
Vielleicht läuft es hier ja andersrum: Nichts angekündigt, aber im Spiel fliegen dann die Fetzen...

Eric Cairns hat kurz vor Schluss noch Shayne Corson total zusammengeschlagen. Man spricht von bis zu zwölf Kopftreffern, von denen mindestens sieben oder acht eingeschlagen haben sollen wie eine Bombe. Gleichzeitig kann sich der Non-fighter Shawn Baytes noch gegen Darcy Tucker behaupten. Ein paar Sekunden später gabs allerdings die Leafs-Revanche und Tie Dummi hat Jim Cummins besiegt.
Das sind echt geile Playoffs dieses Jahr! Physical hockey rulez!

The Islanders called up enforcer Ray Schultz from Bridgeport before the game.

Some scores were settled in the final two minutes of the second and third periods.
In the second, with the Islanders leading 3-2, Toronto's Roberts and Darcy Tucker -- the players who caused the Jonsson and Peca injuries -- were the victims. After a partially missed check by Cairns on Roberts, Cairns went flying into the Toronto bench. As he bent over the boards, his stick jerked up and cut the side of Roberts' face. No penalty was called.
A few seconds later, New York's Steve Webb nailed Tucker with a high hit into the boards. Tucker fell to the ice and then chased after the referees to angrily argue his case. No penalty was called.
With two minutes left in the game, Cairns pummeled Corson with a series of 12 punches to the head. A few feet away, Shawn Bates and Tucker fought to a draw.
As Bates and Cairns left the ice with fighting penalties, they tapped fists. But Cairns was more diplomatic later.
Said Cairns: "As long as you win the game, it doesn't matter who wins the fight."

Then, late Monday afternoon, the NHL suspended Toronto's Shayne Corson for Game 7 for trying to kick Eric Cairns after Cairns had beaten him soundly with several punches to the head with less than two minutes left in Game 6.
Corson had denied the move earlier in the day to The Canadian Press.
"No," he replied. "I was just trying to survive, trying to get out of there."
Coach Pat Quinn also backed Corson.
"He brought his knee up but there was no kick," said Quinn.
It's yet another controversy.
Tucker:
It didn't help that fans in Nassau Coliseum booed "O Canada" before Game 6.
Corson, public enemy No. 1 in New York -- just behind his brother-in-law, Darcy Tucker -- took exception.
"I've seen some pretty wild fans when we played in Boston but it was pretty vulgar," Corson told CP. "What shocked me was some of the young kids who were there and the language they were using and the gestures they were making."
As for booing during the Canadian anthem, Corson found it disappointing.
"Four of our (soldiers) over in Afghanistan died over there helping the cause for the Americans," he said. "(Fans) should show respect for the anthems -- both anthems."
Corson hopes fans at the Air Canada Centre will applaud both anthems Tuesday, as they did before Game 5 last Friday in Toronto.
"We're neighbors. We should stick together and respect each other," he said. "That's the way it used to be and I think that's the way it should be."
Aber seinen Humor hat Tucker nicht verloren... Tucker, whose low hit in Game 5 left Peca with a torn knee ligament, was also able to use some humor -- in short supply this series -- when asked about a fan who taunted him as he left the ice on Sunday.
"Someone threw a beer on me," Tucker said. "I like beer, but not that way."
