Anaheim trifft in ´best-of-seven´-Serie auf New Jersey- Michael Leopold kommentiert

Dienstag, 27. Mai, auf Mittwoch, 28. Mai, 02.00 Uhr, live und im Zweikanalton

...das ist eine sagenhafte Fangquote von genau 99,19 % !!

Quebec's native sons earn Plenty of Playoff accolades

The Province of Quebec, already considered the cradle of top quality NHL goaltending, has stuck another feather in its cap as the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals begin.
Both starting goalies on hockey's biggest stage hail from "La Belle Province."
New Jersey's Martin Brodeur, from Montreal, is an established 31-year-old superstar with two Stanley Cup rings and an Olympic gold medal. Anaheim's Jean-Sebastien Giguere, 26, has been the rage of this year's postseason. He is also from Montreal.

It has been another successful
spring for Quebec goaltenders, led
by New Jersey's Martin Brodeur and
Anaheim's J.S. Giguere.

But these two goalies have much more in common than just the same hometown. Both are disciples of Colorado's Patrick Roy, the acknowledged godfather of the current renaissance of Quebec-bred goalies. Both owe some degree of their success to the butterfly school of goaltending. Each is as comfortable in front of a microphone as they are in front of a screaming slap shot. And, each is the main reason why his team sits four wins from hockey's? greatest glory.
Their battle surely will be entertaining, filled with highlight-reel saves, while being watched intently and proudly by the majority of Quebec Province.
Francois Allaire, the father of the butterfly school of goaltending that dominates the teaching curriculums in Quebec goalie schools, thinks that the success of goalies from the province -- which he also calls home -- will continue to produce wave after wave of world-class goalies.
Allaire, by the way, is Giguere's goalie coach. Giguere swears by Allaire's teachings, believing the goalie coach is the biggest reason he is having a postseason to remember. In the summer, Allaire, along with his brother, Benoit, conduct goaltending clinics for youngsters back home.
Francois Allaire says that last year he saw an unbelievable surge in interest after the fantastic season turned in by Montreal goalie Jose Theodore, who won both the Hart and Vezina trophies before leading Montreal into the second round of the Playoffs.
"I'll tell you a story about that," says Allaire. "Last year with Theodore, he was doing really well with Montreal and we had a goaltending clinic set up for the summer. The clinic not only sold out, but it sold out three months early because everyone was inspired by what Theodore was doing and they were seeing it in the news every day.
"It created momentum with the kids because Theodore was doing well and all these guys wanted to be like Theodore. It's like in Italy, you hear about soccer all the time in the newspaper and on TV, so every one there wants to be a soccer star."
Today, everyone wants to be Giguere

Giguere's superior fundamental skills have left him
nearly always in position to make the save

After a more-than-respectable regular season, Giguere, who has more elements of a traditional butterfly style than Brodeur, has grabbed the spotlight with a Playoff performance that will not soon be forgotten. Stealing a page out of Roy's biography, Giguere has made his first postseason showing one for the ages.
Roy began his legend by winning the Stanley Cup as a rookie with Montreal in 1986. He went 15-5 with a 1.92 goals-against average to earn the first of three Conn Smythe trophies.
Giguere, meanwhile, is 12-2 with a microscopic 1.22 GAA and an otherworldly .960 save percentage. He allowed just one goal in the four-game ouster of Minnesota in the Western Conference Finals and compiled a shutout streak of 217:44, which is the fifth longest in NHL history.
But for more than a decade everyone has wanted to be Brodeur, who has put pressure on Roy's legend since he joined the League full-time in the 1993-94 season.
In his first full season, Brodeur led New Jersey to the Eastern Conference Finals before falling to the New York Rangers in an epochal seven-game series. The next year, he won his first Stanley Cup, helping New Jersey sweep the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the Finals. He won another Stanley Cup in 2000 and just missed in 2001, losing Game 7 to Colorado and Roy.

Brodeur's career resume includes a
pair of Stanley Cups, in 1995 and
2000.

Brodeur also led Canada to a gold medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics, going 4-0-1 with a 1.80 GAA. He is the only NHL goalie to ever fashion four 40-win seasons and has won at least 30 games an unbelievable eight-straight seasons.
Although each talks in the concept of the team as a whole -- praising teammates for their defensive work almost unceasingly -- each knows he will be a focus of the Finals. Each also knows their battle for provincial bragging rights, heated and friendly at the same time, will be a sidebar that will be followed throughout the series.
Both understand that is the nature of their position, and their status as true superstars in the sport. The fact that both are from the province of Quebec only adds to the fun, says the always smiling Giguere.
"The Quebec goalies, we all know each other pretty well," Giguere said in a stop in New York during the regular season. "Over the years, you work out with each other all the time during the summer and you see the other guys around. We talk and get to know each other pretty well.
"It's nice to see those guys during the season and it's fun to go against them when you are playing their teams."
It's still fun in the postseason, even though the stakes are much higher.
