KINGS TO PURSUE BURKE?

USA TODAY: Kevin Allen reports the Los Angeles Kings might decide to shop for a goaltender in the off-season, given the free agent status of Felix Potvin (unrestricted) and Jamie Storr (restricted). Allen raises the possibility of Kings head coach Andy Murray stumping for his club to pursue Phoenix Coyotes netminder Sean Burke, whom Murray coached in Team Canada's recent victory at the World Hockey Championships. Allen cautions, however, that the Coyotes pricetag for Burke would be steep, and there are other clubs, like the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins, who may also have interest in him.

Spector's Note: My thanks to regular contributor "Word". Anything's possible, but don't forget Burke also carries a hefty contract, meaning the Kings, who've made their financial losses public this season, would have to free up significant room in their payroll to land him.

ROBITAILLE TO RETURN TO THE KINGS?

BOOTH NEWSPAPERS: reports the Los Angeles Kings received permission from the Detroit Red Wings to speak to former Kings winger Luc Robitaille's agent, which is generating speculation "Lucky Luc" may return to the City of Angels.

Spector's Note: My thanks to Ase Levin who saw this report from letsgowings.com and passed it along. If the Kings are serious about bringing Robitaille home, don't expect them to shell out a fortune to him.

ROBITAILLE AND KINGS CLOSE TO A DEAL?

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Jerry Crowe reports "a Kings sources" claims the club is conducting talks with former King Luc Robitaille regarding a possible deal to return to the club next season. Robitaille was bought out of the remaining year on his contract by the Detroit Red Wings, effectively making him an unrestricted free agent. Robitaille stated he'd had a good talk with Kings management recently, but also said he'd spoken with three other Western Conference clubs.

SPORTSNET.CA: reports Robitaille's agent, Pat Brisson, is optimistic a new contract can be reached between his client and the Kings. Apparently, Robitaille met with Kings coach Andy Murray to discuss his potential role with the club next season.

Spector's Note: My thanks to "Dancing Boy" for this. Robitaille may have to take a reduced role, as well as salary, if he wants to return to the Kings. At this point in his career, it would probably be best for him to accept a one-year deal and finish his career with the team he's most identified with.

NUMEROUS KINGS FREE AGENTS TO BE LET GO.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Jerry Crowe reports the Kings have decided not to offer contracts to impending free agents Felix Potvin, Craig Johnson, Chris McAlpine, Mikko Eloranta and Ken Belanger. They'll all be available through the unrestricted free agent market. GM Dave Taylor may also cut loose backup netminder Jamie Storr, who's a restricted free agent, if he rejects Taylor's offer of a contract worth less than the $1.75 million qualifying offer.

KINGS ALSO CONSIDERING CHEAPER UFAs.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Lonnie White reports Kings GM Dave Taylor is seeking a quality defenceman and a reliable offensive forward, but he won't be making offers for Derian Hatcher and Sergei Fedorov. Taylor says he has a budget to consider, and he'll take a look at what cheaper alternatives might be available in this summer's "average" (in Taylor's opinion) UFA market.

Spector's Note: My thanks to "Word". I still chuckle every time I read a columnist still seriously linking Fedorov with the Kings. Fedorov may love LA, but the Kings don't love his big salary demands.

FEDOROV INTERESTED IN THE KINGS.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Jerry Crowe reports UFA forward Sergei Fedorov has put the LA Kings on his list of "preferred teams". His agent, Pat Brisson, says the Kings are near the top of the list, but it all depends on how much interest they'd have in his client. The Kings refused to comment, but team president Tim Leiweke is on record as railing against clubs making expensive free agent signings. Meanwhile, the club continues to negotiate with another Brisson client, former King Luc Robitaille, although Crowe reports talks may have "stalled" regarding incentives.

Spector's Note: My thanks to "Word" for sending this in. If Fedorov really wants to play for the Kings, all he has to do is cut his salary demands by over half, and I'm sure the Kings would give him serious consideration. But I don't think that's going to happen, do you?

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the NY Rangers, LA Kings, Montreal Canadiens and New Jersey Devils have shown interest in Fedorov. Garrioch expects Fedorov to eventually sign for less than what he would've received from the Red Wings, whose last offer was believed a four-year, $32 million deal.

Spector's Note: He'll have to take a LOT less to sign with the Kings, Habs and Devils, and even the Rangers probably won't give him a five-year, $50 million or four-year, $40 million deal. My thanks to Todd Howell for sending this in.

Said Taylor: Trent will be a solid addition to the Kings and a player that our fans will appreciate on a nightly basis. He has a real strong work ethic, and we expect him to bring some offensive production and all-around leadership to our hockey club.

In 700 career regular season games with Canucks, Flyers and Dallas Stars/Minnesota North Stars, Klatt has 300 points (126-174=300) and 261 penalty minutes.
Originally drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fifth-round (82nd overall) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Klatt made his NHL debut during the 1991-92 season with his home state North Stars (Kings Head Coach Andy Murray was an assistant coach then with Minnesota). Klatt, a collegiate standout at the University of Minnesota from 1989-92, reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1997 while with the Flyers. That season, he recorded a career-high 24 goals and 45 points.

In four regular season games with Binghamton, Chouinard posted a 2-0-0 record and a 1.97 goals-against-average, while in 15 games with Peoria he had a 12-2-0, a 2.12 goals-against-average and three shutouts. Rock on,
and on, and on...

John LeClair breaks down the left wing all alone, moves into the circle and cranks a wicked slap shot with zero hesitation. The baffled goaltender is left with no answers, just questions as the First Union Center's horn blazes and the crowd booms.

Winger looking forward to return to Kings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Luc Robitaille is returning to Los Angeles for his third stint with the Kings. The highest-scoring left wing in NHL history with 631 goals signed a one-year deal Thursday.

Robitaille

"The Kings is where it all started for me, and the fans of Los Angeles have always treated me and my family so well," Robitaille said from his offseason home in Park City, Utah.

"I look forward to playing for them once again."

Robitaille, 37, played 12 of his first 17 NHL seasons in Los Angeles, helping the Kings reach the 1993 Stanley Cup finals. They lost to Montreal in five games.

"We are very happy to have Luc back in Los Angeles with the Kings," general manager Dave Taylor said. "He has had great success in a Kings uniform and has proven to be one of the great scorers in league history."

Robitaille left the Kings as a free agent in 2001 and played the past two seasons with Detroit. He scored 30 goals in 2002, when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. Last season, he had 11 goals and 20 points in 81 games.

He was traded by the Kings to Pittsburgh in 1994. After short stints with the Penguins and the New York Rangers, Robitaille returned to the Kings before the 1997 season.

Robitaille, an eight-time All-Star, will again wear his No. 20 jersey when the Kings open training camp in September.

He was chosen by the Kings in the ninth round (171st overall) of the 1984 entry draft.

He is second to Marcel Dionne on the Kings' career scoring list with 1,079 points.
