Und? Wo liegt der Sinn darin? Wollten die Panthers ihn nicht sowieso loswerden?

@ALL: Muss der Club eigentlich seine verletzten Spieler weiterzahlen in der NHL? Oder übernimmt das wer anders?

PANTHERS CONSIDERING UFA SHOPPING.

FT. LAUDERDALE SUN-SENTINEL: Michael Russo reports Florida Panthers GM Rick Dudley would like to land a veteran player or two to help in the development of his young club. Dudley would love to sign Joe Nieuwendyk, but it seems unlikely he'll take a pay cut to captain a rebuilding young team. Others that may interest the Panthers include "the Rangers' Mark Messier, Anaheim's Steve Thomas, Detroit's Luc Robitaille, Atlanta's Shawn McEachern, Ottawa's Magnus Arvedson, Dallas' Ulf Dahlen, Edmonton's Todd Marchant and Vancouver's Trent Klatt." Russo also reports sources claim Dudley will try to sign former Washington Capitals defenceman Calle Johansson. He may also be interested in trading for "Calgary's Bob Boughner and Dallas' Richard Matvichuk...(or) the Islanders Mark Parrish".

Spector's Note: Like a lot of teams with small budgets this summer, the Panthers will be active in shopping for affordable talent. I'll be surprised if they don't bring in some of the veteran talent they're seeking.

THE LATEST ON THE PANTHERS.

FT. LAUDERDALE SUN-SENTINEL: Michael Russo reports Florida Panthers GM Rick Dudley has contacted the agents for Joe Nieuwendyk and Adam Graves, although it appears unlikely that Nieuwendyk will be interested in playing for the Panthers. Dudley has also spoken to the agents for Ken Klee, Jonas Hoglund, Luc Robitaille, Steve Thomas, Todd Marchant and Magnus Arvedson, and is interested in defenceman Calle Johansson.

Panthers re-sign Jokinen and Kozlov

SUNRISE, FLA (floridapanthers.com) -- Florida Panthers General Manager Rick Dudley announced today that the club has re-signed C Olli Jokinen and RW Viktor Kozlov, two thirds of Florida's most productive line last season. As per club policy, financial terms of the one-year deals were not disclosed.

"Obviously, Olli and Viktor were our top players last year and it's nice to have them back in the fold," stated Dudley. "They're both wonderfully talented athletes and having those two pieces back in place, all of a sudden, it's easy to get very excited about our team."

Jokinen, 24, is coming off the best season of his six-year NHL career. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound native of Kuopio, Finland, set career highs in goals (36), assists (29), points (65), power-play goals (13), short-handed goals (3), game-winning goals (6) and shots on goal (240). He led the Panthers in goals, points, power-play goals, short-handed goals, game-winning goals and shots, and represented the Panthers well in the 2003 NHL All-Star Game at the Office Depot Center, scoring a goal and adding three assists on Feb. 2, 2003. In his career, Jokinen has scored 152 points (71 goals, 81 assists) in 413 games. The Panthers acquired Jokinen and G Roberto Luongo from the New York Islanders on June 24, 2000, in exchange for RW Mark Parrish and LW Oleg Kvasha.

"I'm happy to be back in the NHL and back with the Florida Panthers," said Jokinen. "I still have a lot to prove and I want to prove to everyone that it wasn't just a one-year fluke last year. I can keep improving and hopefully play even better this year."

Kozlov, 28, is coming off his most productive season since 1999-2000, topping the 50-point mark for the third time in the last five seasons. The 6- foot-5, 225-pound native of Togliatti, Russia, set career highs in goals (22), power-play goals (7) and shots on goal (232). He led the Cats in assists (34) and finished second in points (56). Kozlov, who was selected to the 1999 and 2000 NHL All-Star Games, has scored 333 points (119 goals, 214 assists) in 540 NHL games over his nine-year career. The Panthers acquired Kozlov from San Jose, along with a conditional 1998 draft choice, on Nov. 14, 1997, in exchange for Dave Lowry and a 1998 first-round pick.

Rock on,
and on, and on...

John LeClair breaks down the left wing all alone, moves into the circle and cranks a wicked slap shot with zero hesitation. The baffled goaltender is left with no answers, just questions as the First Union Center's horn blazes and the crowd booms.

The Panthers are close to signing Carolina Hurricanes free-agent forward Craig MacDonald, sources say.

While MacDonald should battle for a roster spot, he will likely start the season in San Antonio, the Panthers' AHL affiliate. But the versatile center and left wing should be one of the team's first recalls in times of need.

The Panthers are in need of added depth because Jeff Toms and Serge Payer, two of San Antonio's top forwards, are expected to sign with clubs in Europe.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound MacDonald, 26, is considered a well-rounded, hard-nosed, intelligent two-way forward. While he should be a 40- to 50-point player in San Antonio, he would be looked upon mostly for his grit, defensive play and penalty killing with the Panthers.

MacDonald, a fourth-round pick by Hartford in 1996, played 35 games with the Hurricanes last season and had six points in 58 career games with Carolina.
