Above anything else, the most interesting competition on the Philadelphia Flyers during this preseason is their defense. Last season’s downfall of the forwards causes concern, but the blue line has some question marks, especially after two less than stellar performances last weekend in preseason losses to New Jersey (5-1) and the New York Rangers (6-4).
With the loss of veteran Luke Richardson added to the mix, the defense will get younger. Youngsters Bruno St. Jacques, Dennis Seidenberg and Jeff Woywitka are fighting it out the final roster spots as the preseason end grows near and the regular season approaches.
Will Eric Desjardins be able to handle an 82-game season with the consistency and strength that has been the staple of his Flyers career? Desjardins had off-season shoulder surgery and was brought along slowly through Training Camp, even wearing a blue jersey in team scrimmages as a sign that he was not to be involved in contact. He practiced at full strength on Wednesday and will make his preseason debut tonight in New Jersey.
While he will not play tomorrow in Carolina, Desjardins will play in all three of the final preseason games over the next two weeks, according to Head Coach Ken Hitchcock.
“We’re going to give everybody a real go here,” Hitchcock said. “Desjardins is going to play [against New Jersey]. He’s healthy, he feels good, he wants to get going, he’s taken some awful bumps here in practice. He feels like this is as close to 100% as it’s going to get, it’s going to feel like this until he gets into that game-like bumping situation.”
Having Desjardins back in the lineup, Hitchcock said, will give the team a look at where they are at in terms of level of play.
“I’m anxious to see how we move the puck,” he said. “We’d like to see if we’re even better transition-wise. I’m curious. The way we want to play is a perfect fit for Eric, the way we want our defensemen to move the puck, where we want it moved to. He’s not afraid to do make some of those plays that maybe others take a little risk into, he’s not afraid to do that stuff. That’s good, that’s what we need.”
Desjardins will be paired with St. Jacques, who was the favorite to take Richardson’s spot in the lineup. However, he hasn’t looked comfortable in any of the preseason games that he has appeared in and has had trouble defending.
“We’d like to see Bruno pick up and get to another level here,” Hitchcock said. “So, we think if he plays with [Desjardins], we’ll get a true read of where he’s at. We’re hoping because we see it at practice, but it’s not moved into the games.”
The emergence of Seidenberg has been one of the surprises of Training Camp this year. Hitchcock brought the 2001 sixth round draft pick into camp after seeing him play for Germany in last spring’s World Championships. Seidenberg, who also competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics, has a wicked slap shot and is a very good passer. He’s been used in all facets in preseason games, including the power play.
Despite his size (6’1” and 190 pound), Seidenberg is the frontrunner for the final defenseman spot in the lineup. But because of his size, he needs to be paired with a big defenseman. He will play aside the 6’2’, 230-lb. Dan McGillis tonight.
“For Dennis to play in the League, he’s going to have to play as a small defenseman,” Hitchcock said. “He’s going to have to get in and get out with the puck. He’s going to have to get it and get going or he’s going to have to be the transporter for somebody. He’s going to end up doing a lot of things that, say, (former Flyer) Steve Duchesne does…he’s going to have to get out of trouble in a hurry, jump into the play and beat people back up the ice, things like that. So, we need him to play with somebody who can control the physical presence, but is also willing to give up the puck so he has it.”
Hitchcock has made the transition from observing play to making decisions on what will become his 2002-03 team. And some of the most important decisions are who he has on the defense and who he pairs together.
why not.

Rock on,
and on, and on...

hoffentlich ist die preseason bald vorbei, ich will good old hockey sehn !!!
