The news about Alexander Daigle attending Penguins training camp broke several weeks ago, but no one knew that another former 30-goal scorer would be invited to Pittsburgh’s training camp. And lo and behold, his name is Alexander, as well.
That mystery man is Alex Selivanov, who twice led the Tampa Bay Lightning in goals (31 in 1995-96, 16 in 1997-98). The sixth-leading scorer in Lightning history, Selivanov has also suited up for the Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets in his NHL career. He has 235 points (121+114) in 459 NHL games, to go along with five points (2+3) in 13 post-season contests.
The Russian sniper began his career with Krylja Sovetov in the USSR, and potted 51 goals and 89 points in 139 games during his four full seasons with the club. Last season, Selivanov was third in the Germany Ice Hockey League with 61 points (26+35) as a member of the Franfurt Lions. The 31-year old right winger was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers with the 140th selection in the 1994 Entry Draft.
The connection between the two Alexanders (or Alexandres) runs deeper than both being in Penguins camp, though. On Jan. 29, 1999, Selivanov was traded from Tampa Bay to Edmonton for Daigle. Now, the possibility that they’ll be passing pucks instead of passing in the night is more realistic.
