A former teammate is joining Jaromir Jagr in Washington.
The Capitals agreed to terms on a five-year deal with free-agent center Robert Lang, the team announced Monday.
Terms were not officially disclosed, but The Sports Network of Canada reported on its Web site that the deal is worth $25 million.
"We needed an offensive center and identified Robert Lang as the right fit for our club," Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee said in a press release. "He plays in all situations and really shoots the puck well."
Lang, 31, played with Jagr on the Penguins from when the center joined the club during the 1997-98 season up until Jagr was dealt to the Captials before the start of last season.
Lang appeared in 62 games for Pittsburgh last season, recording 50 points, ranking third on the team in scoring and fourth in goals (18) despite missing 20 games due to injury. In 2000-01 he set career highs in games played (82), goals (32), assists (48) and points (80), ranking fourth on the Penguins and 20th in the league in scoring.
Drafted by Los Angeles in the seventh round, 133rd overall, of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Lang has totaled 122 goals and 197 assists for 319 points in 495 career games with Los Angeles, Boston and Pittsburgh.
TORONTO -- The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim reportedly were first to wade into the free agent pool early Monday, signing veteran center Adam Oates to a two-year, $7 million contract.
While teams could not negotiate with prospective free agents until midnight ET, The Sports Network of Canada reported that Anaheim received permission from the Philadelphia Flyers, who held Oates' rights.
One of the premier playmakers of his era, Oates will turn 40 before the start of the 2002-03 season. But the Ducks desperately need offense after ranking next-to-last in the NHL with 175 goals.
Oates ranks third among active players and eighth overall with 1,027 career assists after leading the league with 64 in 2001-02. He started last season -- his 17th in the NHL -- with the Washington Capitals, but was shipped to the Flyers at the trade deadline for goaltending prospect Maxime Ouellet and three draft choices.
In Anaheim, Oates will feed the puck to five-time All-Star left wing Paul Kariya, a restricted free agent and three-time 40-goal scorer.
Playing alongside future Hall of Famer Brett Hull, Oates amassed 228 assists in 2½ seasons with the St. Louis Blues from 1989-92. He moved on to Boston, where he enjoyed a career season in 1992-93 with 45 goals and 97 assists.

(02.07.2002)
(02.07.2002)

Joseph going from Leafs to Wings
By MIKE HOUSEHOLDER
Associated Press Writer
DETROIT (AP) - Goodbye, Dominator. Hello, Cujo.
Free-agent goalie Curtis Joseph said Tuesday that he was signing with the Detroit Red Wings, who saw goaltender Dominik Hasek retire last week after leading them to the Stanley Cup.
At a news conference in Toronto just before leaving for Detroit, Joseph was overcome with emotion and discussed how difficult it was leave the Maple Leafs - but that the lure of hockey's top team prize was too strong to resist.
The signing is expected to be announced by the Red Wings at an afternoon news conference.
"Probably a year ago I couldn't have seen myself playing anywhere else," he said. "Detroit offers a very unique opportunity. Everybody who plays there says the future is now. That was enticing. ...
"There's no guarantee's that I'll go to Detroit and win a Stanley Cup. But I'd like to take that opportunity."
Joseph, with his daughter on his lap and his family around him, said there were "a lot of sleepless nights" in deciding his future.
The 35-year-old Joseph gives the Red Wings another of the NHL's top goalies.
Hasek led the Red Wings to their third Cup in six years before announcing that he was going home to the Czech Republic.
Joseph said money was not the biggest consideration in leaving Toronto, and added he wants the chance to win a Stanley Cup with the Red Wings.
Joseph compiled a 133-88-27 record and a 2.42 goals-against average in four seasons with Toronto. Joseph earned $6.57 million last season, which was the last of a four-year, $24 million deal.
Joseph broke his hand last season but went 29-17-5 with a career-best 2.23 GAA and a .906 save percentage in 51 games. He had a 2.30 GAA and a .914 save percentage in 20 playoff games. The Leafs were eliminated in the Eastern Conference championship series by Carolina.
Joseph became an unrestricted free agent after failing to reach a deal Sunday with the Maple Leafs, who then traded his rights to Calgary for a 2004 eighth-round draft pick.
Calgary had the rights for about two hours Sunday before the goalie became a free agent.
"I guess the bottom line ... at 22 years old, when I came into the league, if you told me I was 35 and I hadn't won a Stanley Cup, and you are able to go where the odds may be 3 to 1 or 2 to 1, I'll take it," Joseph said.
9/11/01 - I will never forget
TCNJ - Hope to see you in 2004
Whoops, there he is !!
Würd mal sagen, da sind Haseks Millionen gut angelegt !!
Soso, Jospeh. Ein weiterer Kandidat, der das Ende seiner Karriere kommen sieht, aber noch unbedingt mal den Cup stemmen will.... Was macht man also ? Man geht zu den Wings Fine with me...
TORONTO -- Ed Belfour joined Toronto on Tuesday, quickly filling the Maple Leafs' net vacated by free agent Curtis Joseph.
Belfour was 21-27-11 with a 2.65 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage last season with Dallas. The Stars let him go, giving the goalie's job to Marty Turco.
Belfour, 37, was chosen over fellow unrestricted free agent Byron Dafoe to replace Joseph, who left the Leafs for the Stanley Cup-champion Detroit Red Wings.
The Leafs scheduled a news conference for Air Canada Center on Tuesday afternoon. But Belfour's own Web site couldn't wait, proclaiming "Eddie returns to Canada as a Toronto Maple Leaf.''
Leafs coach and GM Pat Quinn worked with Belfour at the Olympics, where Quinn was Canada's coach.
Free agent defenseman Chris Chelios is very close to re-signing with the Detroit Red Wings, ESPN The Magazine's E.J. Hradek reported Tuesday.
Chelios
Chelios' contract would be for two years, according to Hradek. He has been seeking a contract of that length for $7 million per season.
The Red Wings originally offered Chelios a one-year deal at his current annual salary of $5.5 million.
Chelios, 40, has been in talks with Detroit, the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, but he has made it clear he wants to remain with the Stanley C
CALGARY, Alberta -- Forward Martin Gelinas, whose overtime goal put the Carolina Hurricanes into the Stanley Cup finals, signed with the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.
Terms of the deal were not released.
In 72 games with the Hurricanes last season, Gelinas had 13, 16 assists with 30 penalty minutes.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound left-winger recorded seven points in 23 playoff games, including the series-clinching overtime winner in the Eastern Conference final against Toronto Maple Leafs.
He has played 14 NHL seasons with Edmonton, Quebec, Vancouver and Carolina, and was a member of the Oilers' Stanley Cup champions in 1990.
In 895 games, Gelinas has 231 goals and 237 assists.
