Fleury's Rights Acquired
The San Jose Sharks have acquired the rights to right wing Theoren Fleury from the New York Rangers. The acquisition of Fleury completes the future considerations portion of the Sharks and Rangers draft day trade from July 24, 2002, in which San Jose sent a sixth round selection (194th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft to New York in exchange for the Rangers sixth round selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and future considerations.
Fleury is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The Rangers let a June 15 deadline pass to extend his contract for next season, making it clear they were not going to pursue Fleury. San Jose pulled a similar trade with Chicago to acquire the negotiating rights for Gary Suter back in 1998, however, with greater uncertainty regarding Fleury's final destination, the trade could still be beneficial to the Sharks.
Should Fleury sign elsewhere, the Sharks would likely be awarded a high-round compensatory pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Compensatory picks are awarded when teams lose free agents and aren't able to replace them with similar level players. If the Rangers are as active in the free agent market as most analysts expect, they would likely not receive the compensatory selection for the loss of Fleury.
"It's a win-win situation," said Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Dean Lombardi. "Each team gets something of value in the deal."
It does raise the possibility that San Jose could potentially keep last year's team intact and still add Fleury's talents, though the reality of both Selanne and Fleury playing in Silicon Valley at last year's salaries is very slim, especially since the Sharks have made signing Selanne the top priority.
Last season, Fleury, 31, finished second on the Rangers in scoring with 63 points (24-39=63) playing in all 82 games. He was a member of Canada's 2002 and 1998 Olympic teams and won a Stanley Cup in 1989 with Calgary.
Stopp!
