Colorado vs. Detroit 2:2

Avs don't give up lead in Game 4

DENVER (AP) -- After squandering seven leads against Detroit, the Colorado Avalanche were finally able to build on one.
They sure needed it.
Patrick Roy stopped 31 shots and Chris Drury scored late in the third period as the Avalanche beat the Red Wings 3-2 Saturday to even the Western Conference finals at two games apiece.
Drury scored his fifth of the playoffs and second game-winner of the series by one-timing a pass from Peter Forsberg over Dominik Hasek's glove with 3:17 left.
It marked Colorado's first two-goal lead since Game 4 against San Jose in the conference semifinals and just the second lead the defending Stanley Cup champions have held against Detroit.
Drury's game-winner in overtime of Game 2 was the only other Colorado lead to stand.
"We have given up so many leads, but today we did a better job,'' said Forsberg, who has at least one point in 11 of his last 12 playoff games. "Maybe we're learning, hopefully we're learning. It's going to be a long series and if we're going to win, we have to be able to keep the lead.''
Drury's goal proved vital, as Brett Hull made it 3-2 with 2.7 seconds left on a wrister from just outside the crease. Colorado won the ensuing faceoff and Detroit wasn't able to get off a shot.
Game 5 is Monday night in Detroit.
"I thought we pressed right to the end,'' Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "I was very proud of our team today. You like to get the results, but we played well. I know that's not good enough, but it's always worse if you lose and play poorly.''
Joe Sakic, who had just two shots in Game 3, put Colorado up 2-1 45 seconds into the third period, beating Hasek stickside with a wrister from the slot. Greg de Vries set up the goal, stealing a pass from Chris Chelios near the center line.
It was Sakic's ninth goal of the playoffs.
"I thought that when Sakic scored the goal at the start of the third, they got more of the momentum after that,'' Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom said. "We couldn't really get it going like we did in the first and second period.''
The Avalanche vowed to play better defense in front of Roy after he faced 42 shots in Game 3, a 2-1 loss in overtime, but that wasn't the case early.
The Red Wings peppered Roy with 16 shots in the first period, including several from close range. But just like in Game 3, when he stopped 40 shots, Roy kept the Avalanche in it.
He stopped Boyd Devereaux on a one-timer from just outside the crease early in the first, then a hard shot from the right circle by Hull 30 seconds later.
Roy also made a sliding stop with his chest on a shot by Tomas Holmstrom on a Detroit power play in the second, and had a kick save on a shot by Hull on a power play with four minutes left in the game.
It was the 237th career playoff game for Roy, moving him past Mark Messier for most in NHL history.
"We came out a little flat,'' Colorado's Dan Hinote said. "Thank God for Patty once again.''
Colorado's Steven Reinprecht opened the scoring 7:50 into the game after Sergei Fedorov broke his stick and couldn't stop Rob Blake.
Fedorov tried to get in Blake's way after a puck caromed out of the corner, but didn't slow him much without his stick. Blake fanned on a shot from the slot, but Reinprecht gathered the loose puck and lifted a backhander over Hasek.
It was Reinprecht's sixth goal of the playoffs and his first since Game 6 against San Jose in the conference quarterfinals.
But just as in the first three games, Colorado couldn't hold the lead.
Fedorov tied it 6:20 into the second after stealing a pass from Forsberg on a Colorado power play.
Forsberg's pass from near the Red Wings blue line hit Lidstrom's stick and bounced off Fedorov's chest, leading to a breakaway. Fedorov made a couple of fakes before slipping a backhander between Roy's pads.
It was Detroit's sixth short-handed goal of the playoffs.
"It's tied, so I don't think we'll be killing ourselves in thinking we should have done this or that,'' said Fedorov, who scored for the first time since Game 5 against Vancouver in the first round. "I think we're just going to regroup and clean up our defensive play.''
Hasek wasn't tested much early, but faced a flurry of shots on a Colorado power play early in the third period.
He made two sprawling saves early, then stopped consecutive shots by Drury from close range in a span of 15 seconds. He stopped five shots during the power play and 19 overall.

Game notes
Colorado LW Mike Keane did not play because of a rib injury. He has one goal and four assists in 17 playoff games. ... Detroit C Igor Larionov returned after missing five games with a sprained right knee. ... The Stanley Cup is in Denver this weekend. ... Colorado is 7-1 following a loss in the playoffs this year, 12-3 since last year. ... Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play. ... Colorado is 3-0 in Game 4s this year and 0-3 in Game 3s.

When It Counts
Chris Drury's fifth goal of the playoffs went from a little insurance to a lot of reassurance. Drury scored late in a pivotal third period to give Colorado a 3-1 lead en route to a 3-2 victory over Detroit in Saturday's Game 4. Brett Hull's last-second goal was too late for Detroit as Drury notched his second winner of the now even West finals.

Drury gives some thanks to Patrick Roy (31 saves).

AVALANCHE leads series 3 - 2 after second OT win in detroit!

Red Wings one loss from elimination

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DETROIT (AP) -- Peter Forsberg once again showed why he may be the best hockey player in the world.

The native of Sweden scored 6:24 into overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 2-1 victory over Detroit on Monday night and a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals.

Forsberg, who also had an assist, is the leading scorer in the playoffs with 27 points despite missing the regular season after having four foot surgeries and his spleen removed in the past year.

"It's just unbelievable," Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. "Even after missing the whole year, he continues to rise up to challenges and pressure. He's the full package as a player."

Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said the officials missed an offsides call on the winning goal, which was scored on a breakaway as the Red Wings got caught on a line change.

"It was a quick play, a hard call," Bowman said. "You're not going to cry over a call like that."

Forsberg said he didn't know if teammate Brian Willsie was offsides, but he did know that he didn't expect to have so much room on the play that turned into his third career overtime playoff goal.

"You don't usually get breakaways in OT," said Forsberg, who has nine goals and 18 assists in the playoffs. "I was a little nervous, but I got it done."

The defending Stanley Cup champions can eliminate the Red Wings and move a step closer to repeating with a win in Game 6 Wednesday night at home.

"We have to play smarter," said Detroit's Steve Yzerman, who tied the game early in the third period. "We have to play our positions. We can't go running all over the ice."

Colorado and Detroit played their third overtime game of the series -- the sixth in their postseason rivalry since 1996 -- and the road team won for the sixth time.

"It must just be coincidence," Colorado's Joe Sakic said.

Colorado, which was outshot 4-1 in the overtime, became the first team in the series to win consecutive games.

Steven Reinprecht gave Colorado a 1-0 lead -- its fifth in five games -- early in the first period.

The Avalanche's ninth one-goal lead in the series was negated for the eighth time when Yzerman scored in the first minute of the third period.

Then not much happened until Colorado was penalized for having too many men on the ice, which gave the Red Wings a power play with 6:54 left. Patrick Roy made a few saves to ruin Detroit's hopes for a go-ahead goal.

Like Dominik Hasek earlier in the game, Roy got some help from the metal behind him.

With about 100 seconds left in regulation, Detroit's Brendan Shanahan made a move to fool a defenseman and Roy, but his shot from just inside the right circle clanged off the post.

"I'll have a nightmare about that one," Shanahan said.

Hasek stopped Forsberg's shot with about 10 seconds left, which ensured there would be a third overtime in four games.

Roy made 26 saves and Hasek turned away 27 shots.

Like a heavyweight fight, both teams were more cautious than aggressive for the first few minutes of the game.

Detroit got the first shot off 6:37 into the game, then within the next 10 seconds the Avalanche tested Hasek with two shots.

Colorado scored first, again.

Forsberg carried the puck along the left boards, spun around, then fed a short pass to Reinprecht, who scored on a wraparound goal just past defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom at 17:11 of the first period.

Reinprecht scored two winning goals in the first round against Los Angeles. Forsberg's 84th career playoff assist moved him past Sakic in Avalanche history.

It took a few seconds for Yzerman's goal -- Detroit's first on the power play since Game 2 -- to be ruled a goal 54 seconds into the third period.

Yzerman held the puck in the left corner, then skated toward Roy and flipped a shot that somehow squeezed between his right knee and the post. After Yzerman pointed toward the back of the net, a referee signaled it was a goal.

It was Yzerman's 67th career playoff goal, tying him with Gordie Howe for the most in Detroit history.

Game notes
The Avalanche scratched left wings Mike Keane and Alex Tanguay from their lineup before the game. Keane missed a second straight game with a rib injury while Tanguay missed his first game of the playoffs with a leg injury. ... Detroit and Colorado played one overtime game in the 1996, 1999 and 2000 playoffs. ... If a Game 7 is necessary, it will be played Friday night in Detroit.

Diese Serie geht über seven Games!

Und dann im letzten Spiel in Overtime? 9?

Forsberg mit dem Comeback des Jahres? Oder Mats Sundin?

Oder doch Saku Koivu?
