VOORHEES, N.J. -- Bill Barber was fired by the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, one day after players said the coach was at fault for the team's collapse in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year.
With players complaining and the team sputtering its way out of the playoffs, Bill Barber had to go.
General manager Bob Clarke, announcing the dismissal at a news conference, said veteran players lost respect for Barber.
"We just felt that there was no way of being able to heal the wounds that had developed between the coach and the players," Clarke said.
Clarke, Barber's former teammate, called him a close friend and said he would be offered another job in the organization.
Barber, the NHL's coach of the year last season, is the fifth coach the Flyers have let go since 1997. It is the sixth coaching change Clarke has made since returning to Philadelphia as GM seven years ago.
The Flyers won the Atlantic Division with 97 points, earning the No. 2-seeded in the Eastern Conference playoffs. But they lost the best-of-seven series to the No. 7-seeded Ottawa Senators in five games, scoring a record-low total of just two goals.
With a payroll of $55.5 million and a roster at the start of the season that included seven players who have been All-Stars and three former 50-goal scorers, Philadelphia was a strong favorite to reach the Stanley Cup finals.
The Flyers were 31-16-7 after Barber took over for Craig Ramsay in December 2000, but they lost in six games to Buffalo in the playoffs.
Barber was criticized Monday by several players, including captain Keith Primeau, who said the coaching staff wasn't open to suggestions from the players.
"We had the worst power play in the league, why are we not practicing it?" Primeau said. "The tirades on the bench. All season long we said if someone makes a mistake, they're getting yelled at.
"We say when we come to the bench, make that adjustment. He wants the player to make the adjustment. Our job is to play. I felt like I was having to make the adjustments on the bench. I don't feel that's part of my job description."
A member of Philadelphia's only Stanley Cup championship teams in 1974 and 1975, Barber played his entire 12-year career with the Flyers, was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990 and has been with the organization for 30 years. He and Clarke were linemates on Philadelphia's Broad Street Bullies teams of the 1970s.
Barber ranks first on the Flyers' career list with 420 goals, third with 463 assists and second with 883 points.
Since his playing career ended, Barber served numerous coaching and scouting roles. He was head coach of the Hershey Bears, the Flyers' former AHL affiliate, in 1984-85 and 1995-96 and was an assistant coach with the Flyers from 1985-88 and January 1994 to 1995. He was the team's director of pro scouting from 1988-96.
Barber spent four years as head coach of the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers' current AHL affiliate, before becoming Ramsay's assistant at the start of the 2000-01 season. He led the Phantoms to the Calder Cup championship in 1998.
Barber lost his wife Jenny to lung cancer in December, but didn't miss any games, preferring to keep his mind on work.
Clarke spent $101 million on long-term contracts last summer, including a $45 million, five-year deal for forward John LeClair, who scored just 25 goals and had no points in the playoffs. He also traded a top prospect and three draft picks for 39-year-old center Adam Oates at the trade deadline.
The Flyers struggled at the start of the season, and were 15-10-5-1 by the middle of December. But, they went 18-5-1-2 the next two months, and had the best record in the East at the Olympic break.
After returning from the break, Philadelphia won just nine of 26 games.
Goaltender Brian Boucher said Barber didn't make adjustments when the team was losing to Ottawa.
"All we ever said was 'work harder,' " Boucher said. "We needed a game plan to somehow counter what they were doing. There's always a way to come up with a counter."
Clarke fired Terry Murray after the Flyers were swept in the 1997 Stanley Cup finals by Detroit. His replacement, Wayne Cashman, lasted only 61 games into the 1997-98 season before he was let go in favor of Roger Neilson.
Neilson underwent treatment for multiple myeloma after coaching 57 games in the 1999-00 season. Ramsay took over on an interim basis and led the Flyers to the conference finals, where they blew a 3-1 series lead to the New Jersey Devils and lost Game 7 at home.
After the successful playoff run, Ramsay was retained -- but not for long. Just 28 games into the next season, Clarke replaced him with Barber.

Mehrere Spieler hatten sich über Barber beschwert, sein System passe nicht zu den Talenten des Teams und er habe sich geweigert das Powerplay zu trainieren, obwohl die Flyers eines der schlechtesten Überzahlspiele hatten. Barber war Mitglied des Teams, das in den 70er Jahren den Stanley Cup gewann und spielte 12 Jahre für die Flyers. Er war über Jahre hinweg der Sturmpartner von Bobby Clarke. Im vergangenen Jahr war seine Frau an Krebs gestorben, er nahm aber unmittelbar danach die Arbeit mit dem Team wieder auf. Von da an lief es aber überhaupt nicht mehr mit den Flyers. + + +

Das überraschende Play-off-Aus der Philadelphia Flyers hat personelle Konsequenzen nach sich gezogen. Am Dienstag entließ der Verein der nordamerikanischen Eishockey-Liga NHL seinen Coach Bill Barber, nachdem der Mitfavorit auf den Stanley-Cup bereits in Runde eins der Finalrunde sensationell mit nur einem Sieg bei vier Niederlagen an den Ottawa Senators gescheitert war. In den fünf Spielen der "best-of-seven"-Serie waren den "Flyers" nur zwei Tore gelungen.
"Das war keine leichte Entscheidung, Bill hat dem Verein im Laufe der Jahre sehr viel gegeben", meinte ein enttäuschter Bobby Clarke anschließend. Der General Manager hatte erst im letzten Jahr den Vertrag mit dem Trainer verlängert und stand zuletzt selbst in der Diskussion.
Ein Jahr nach dem Gewinn der Adams Trophy als "NHL-Trainer des Jahres" musste Barber nach einem erfolgreichem Saisonstart gegen Ende der Saison mehr und mehr Pleiten mitansehen. In den Play-offs kam es dann zu dem peinlichen Aus, als die "Flyers" in 15 aufeinander folgenden Dritteln kein reguläres Tor erzielen konnten. Das Schicksal des 39-Jährigen war besiegelt, als anschließend mehrere Profis öffentlich seine Arbeit kritisierten.

Klar, Barber ist 39 Jahre alt, weil Jahrgang 52 und er konnte in den 70er den SC gewinnen

Tut mir Leid für ihn, er ist ein guter Trainer und is mir auch so ziemlich sympathisch (hatte auch nicht gerade eine einfache Zeit, nachdem seine Frau diese Saison an Krebs gestorben is)
...irgendwas musste ja passieren!! Diese personelle Entscheidung ist mir aber tausend Mal lieber als irgendwelche Spielerrauswürfe, z.B. Primeau, Le Clair, Richardson, und wie heisst der eine Typ nochmal, der schwarze.......

Zu groß sei die Diskrepanz zwischen Coach und Spieler, argumentierte der Präsident und General Manager Bob Clarke, der in den 70ern zusammen mit Barber in einer Reihe spielte und zwei Stanley Cups holte.
Kapitän Keith Primeau begrüßt die Entscheidung seines Chefs, da Barber sämtliche Anliegen und Vorschläge seiner erfahrenen Spieler während der Saison missachtet habe. Barber ist bereits der fünfte Übungsleiter in 'Philly' seit 1997.

Schon richtig. Aber das es bei 82 Spielen dann doch noch zu 51 Punkten gereicht hat steht nirgends.

Ich hoffe inständig, das der Grundkern an Spielern erhalten bleibt für nachste Season, mit eins zwei ergänzungsspielern rocken die Flyers auch dann wieder durch die Liga !! holypalooza
