Xpress Name Rick Hayward Head Coach

Lake St. Louis, MO - The Canton Xpress Hockey Club of the United Hockey League (UHL) announced on Wednesday that Rick Hayward has been named head coach and director of hockey operations.
Hayward, making his professional head coaching debut, is the first coach in Canton Xpress club history. He brings over 15 years of hockey playing experience to the Xpress, including a combined 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), American Hockey League (AHL) and International Hockey League (IHL).
The Toledo, Ohio native spent time with the Montreal Canadiens (NHL), the Los Angeles Kings (NHL), the New York Islanders (NHL), the Winnipeg Jets (NHL) and the Florida Panthers (NHL) organizations.
After three seasons with the Hull Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Hayward was drafted by Montreal in the eighth round of the 1986 NHL Draft. The physical defenseman played in over 800 professional games including stints with the Sherbrooke Canadiens (AHL), Saginaw Hawks (IHL), Salt Lake Golden Eagles (IHL), Phoenix Roadrunners (IHL), Moncton Hawks (AHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (IHL), Cleveland Lumber Jacks (IHL) and the Frankfurt Lions (DEL).
"I am thankful to the ownership for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to building a successful team on and off the ice in this exciting new hockey community. We all anticipate great success in Canton," stated Hayward.
Hayward, 35, and his wife Sharron have two children, Beau (12) and Bianca (9).
The Xpress will play at the Canton Civic Center (5,000). Ice installation at the Civic Center will be completed this spring and the new UHL team will commence play in October 2002.
