Holik suspended for high stick on Brind'Amour
Associated Press
NEW YORK -- New Jersey Devils center Bobby Holik was suspended for one game without pay by the NHL on Monday for hitting Carolina's Rod Brind'Amour in the face with his stick.
Brind'Amour needed seven stitches to close a cut above his left eyebrow from the highsticking, which came midway through the third period of Carolina's 4-2 victory Saturday.
Holik's suspension was automatic because he was given a match penalty for deliberate injury by the officials. He'll lose $18,041.24 in salary, which will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Holik was to sit out New Jersey's game against Florida on Monday.
He hit Brind'Amour after the Hurricanes forward won a faceoff between the two in the Carolina end.
No penalty was called immediately, and Brind'Amour responded by chasing Holik around the ice, cross-checking him several times to earn a minor penalty.
After play was stopped, linesman Lonnie Cameron reported the highsticking to referees Terry Gregson and Don Van Massenhoven, and Holik was given the 5-minute match penalty.
After the game, Holik said he didn't disagree with the call, but was upset the officials failed to call several minor penalties earlier in the game when he was hooked and held. He also was upset the officials allowed Brind'Amour to hit him several times before calling a penalty.
"I play an aggressive style and I stick out more," Holik said Saturday. "I've dealt with it all my career and I am not going to buckle now. It's what has made me successful. You get into situations like that. I'm going to take it and move on."
