Butch Goring, an integral member of the Islanders' four Stanley Cup winners, has been named the franchise's new Head Coach. The announcement was made this afternoon by Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. Contract details were not disclosed.
"Butch is the right person for a lot of reasons," said Milbury. "He has been a champion as both a player and a coach. He is an excellent communicator who knows how to develop young players. And just as important, Butch has Islander blood."
The Islanders' acquisition of Goring from Los Angeles on March 10, 1980 is viewed as the quintessential "final piece" deadline deal. The talented, but struggling Islanders—stuck in neutral at 31-28-9—went unbeaten in the final twelve games of the regular season (8-0-4) and then captured the first of four consecutive Stanley Cups. In 1981, Goring won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs.
In 1978, while a member of the Kings, the center won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and the Masterton Trophy for his dedication to hockey. In an NHL career totaling 1,107 games with the Kings, Islanders and Bruins, Goring had 375 goals, 513 assists, 888 points and just 102 penalty minutes.
Goring's coaching career began in 1981 with the Islanders, when Al Arbour named him a player/assistant coach. After his playing career ended in Boston, he was named Head Coach of the Bruins for the '85-86 season and led the team to a 37-31-12 record and a playoff berth. After part of another season with the Bruins, Goring had stints with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, the Islanders' AHL affiliate in Capital District and the IHL's Las Vegas Thunder.
In 1994, Goring began a highly successful five-year run as GM/Head Coach of the Denver/Utah Grizzlies of the IHL. While developing Islander prospects, Goring led the Grizzlies to back-to-back IHL championships in 1995 and 1996 and was named Coach of the Year both seasons. In his five seasons, the 49-year old Goring compiled a record of 235-141-33 and 34-16 in the playoffs. Islanders that have played under Goring include Zigmund Palffy, Claude Lapointe, Wade Flaherty, Vladimir Chebaturkin, Mark Lawrence and Vladimir Orszagh.

@coach
Tiefschwarz, tiefschwarz dein Humor. TzTzTz
