CHICAGO DAILY HERALD: Tim Sassone reports Blackhawks general manager Mike Smith intends to add two veteran defencemen to his roster before training camp opens in September. Smith said he'll be active in this summer's UFA market, but could also explore trade possibilities if he doesn't find anything to his liking via free agency.
Spector's Note: The 'Hawks could certainly use someone like Hatcher, but given the tightfisted approach of their ownership, landing the former Stars captain appears remote. Possibly he'll take a stab at Dmitry Yushkevich (who played for Smith in Toronto) or Greg de Vries.
CHICAGO DAILY HERALD: Tim Sassone reports of speculation the Blackhawks may be interested in UFA winger Teemu Selanne. However, it's expected the 'Hawks might only offer up a one-year, $5 million US contract to "the Finnish Flash". Other UFAs who might interest Chicago GM Mike Smith include "Colorado's Greg de Vries and Bryan Marchment, Philadelphia's Dmitry Yushkevich, Toronto's Glen Wesley and Washington's Ken Klee...Edmonton center Todd Marchant, Detroit winger Darren McCarty, Columbus center Ray Whitery, Tampa Bay center Vaclav Prospal, Washington winger Sergei Berezin, Vancouver winger Trent Klatt and Ottawa winger Vaclav Varada." Smith may also have interest in Oleg Tverdovsky, released by the New Jersey Devils on June 30th.
Spector's Note: Given the expected lack of a market for big-name UFAs, Selanne might well jump at that offer if there's nothing better available.
die haben doch massen und mengen an draft-picks und future considerations, damit könnte man zwei, vielleicht drei farm-teams füllen. aber für nix, wie das bestimmt von wirtz angedacht ist, spielen auch ufa´s nicht für die hawks. aber hauptsache man macht jedes jahr durch merchandising ein dickes plus, egal wie scheisse die mannschaft ist. wären die pengs nicht noch unfähiger in allem, würden die hawks letzter. mein tipp: 29. ------------------------------ GOD is busy .. can I help you ?!
