And the winner is...

TORONTO - Hockey fans now know the Stanley Cup will have a New Jersey mailing address for the next year and that the Herculean efforts of Mighty Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere were rewarded with the Conn Smythe Trophy, and there are few unknowns left in the 2002-03 season.
And the last of these questions will be answered Thursday night at the 2003 NHL Awards Television Special where the winners of the League's seven annual postseason awards -- the Hart, Norris, Selke, Calder, Lady Byng, Adams and Vezina trophies will be announced. The Awards show will be broadcast nationally in Canada on CBC and in the United States on ESPN2 from 8-9:30 p.m., ET.

Martin Brodeur is a finalist for both
the Hart and Vezina Trophies.

The voting for the remaining awards is conducted at the conclusion of the regular season. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association vote for the Hart, Norris, Selke, Calder and Lady Byng), while the NHL Broadcasters' Association selects the Jack Adams Award. NHL General Managers vote for the Vezina Trophy. The results are tabulated by the accounting firm Ernst & Young.
The 2003 NHL Awards Television Special will be a star-studded event that will feature some new and old faces who will be compete for hockey's most prized possessions.
One of the most interesting categories is the Hart Trophy, as New Jersey's Martin Brodeur, Colorado's Peter Forsberg and Vancouver's Markus Naslund are all first-time finalists.
The Calder Trophy will honor the top rookie. Nominees are St. Louis' Barret Jackman, Columbus' Rick Nash and Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg.
The Norris Trophy for top defenseman will be selected from two past winners, Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom (2002 & 2001) and St. Louis' Al MacInnis (1999) and first-time finalist Derian Hatcher of the Dallas Stars. Lidstrom earned his sixth consecutive nomination as a Norris finalist and last June he captured the award for the second consecutive year after finishing second in 1998, 1999 and 2000. MacInnis, who is a finalist for the sixth time, won the Norris in 1999, was runner-up in 1990 and 1991 and third in 1989 and 1994.
The Vezina Trophy for top goaltending honors also will feature two former trophy finalists in Brodeur and Toronto's Ed Belfour. Dallas' Marty Turco is a first-time nominee. Belfour, who won the trophy in 1991 and 1993, earned his fourth nomination for the top goalie award. He finished second in the voting in 1995 as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. Brodeur, who also is a four-time finalist, was runner-up in 1997 and 1998 and was third in 2001. Turco led all NHL goaltenders in goals-against average (1.72) and save percentage (.932) and tied for fifth in shutouts (seven), while compiling a 31-10-10 record in 55 games for the Stars.
The Frank J. Selke Trophy for the top defensive forward also features two former finalists, Dallas' Jere Lehtinen and New Jersey's John Madden, and one new-comer, Minnesota's Wes Walz. Lehtinen, who is a Selke finalist for the fifth time, won the trophy in 1998 and 1999 and was third in 1997 and 2002. Madden, a finalist for the second time, captured the award in 2001.
The coaches also followed the two-for-one theme this year as Minnesota's Jacques Lemaire and Ottawa's Jacques Martin are former Jack Adams Award finalists, while Tampa Bay's John Tortorella is a first-timer. Lemaire won the award in 1994 with the New Jersey Devils. The Minnesota coach led the Wild to a Stanley Cup Playoff berth in the franchise's third NHL season with a 42-29-10-1 record and 95 points. That marked a 22-point improvement over 2001-2002. Martin, a finalist for the fourth time in seven years, won the Adams in 1999 and was third in 1997 and 2001. He led the Senators to their first Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's top regular-season club in the 2002-03 season. Tortorella, who is the first Lightning coach to be nominated since Terry Crisp finished third in 1996, led the Lightning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

Ottawa coach Jacques Martin is up
for Coach of the Year honors for the
fourth time.

The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship has two newcomers this year in Toronto's Alexander Mogilny and Dallas' Mike Modano. Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is a former nominee. He is a Byng finalist for the fifth-consecutive year, finished second from 1999 through 2001, while placing in third last year. The Red Wings' defenseman is one of only two defenders in 20 years to be voted a Lady Byng finalist. Brian Leetch of the New York Rangers, who finished third in 1992, is the other NHL defender to be voted a finalist.
Some other NHL trophies will also be presented at the NHL Television Awards Special in Toronto as well
Forsberg of the Colorado Avalanche will receive the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's points leader, while teammate Milan Hejduk will accept the Maurice Richard Trophy as the League's goal-scoring leader. Forsberg recorded 106 points (29 goals, 77 assists) and Hejduk tallied 50 goals.

Forsberg, the NHL's top point getter, has a
chance to take home the Hart Trophy.

Three goaltenders -- Roman Cechmanek and Robert Esche of the Philadelphia Flyers and Brodeur -- will share the William M. Jennings Trophy, presented to the goaltender(s) with more than 25 appearances on the club allowing the fewest goals against during the regular season. The Flyers and Devils finished the season having allowed 166 goals. Cechmanek is now a member of the Los Angeles Kings, having been traded shortly after the season ended.
Two other trophies, the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey). The finalists are Boston Bruins defenseman Bryan Berard, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim center Steve Rucchin and Detroit Red Wings center Steve Yzerman. The King Clancy Memorial Trophy (leadership and humanitarian contribution to his community) also will be presented at the Awards Ceremony.

Näslund gewinnt Lester B. Pearson Trophäe

Toronto, 12.

Hat trick for Lidstrom
By Robert Picarello | NHL.com | June 12, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORONTO -- When it comes to the top defenseman in the NHL, Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom is the state of the art. That became crystal clear Thursday night at the Metro Toronto Convention Center as Lidstrom won his third straight Norris Trophy as the NHL's top backliner.

Lidstrom out-polled former Norris winner Al MacInnis (1999) of the St. Louis Blues and first-timer Derian Hatcher of the Dallas Stars in balloting conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Lidstrom is the first defenseman to win the trophy in three consecutive seasons since Boston's Bobby Orr captured the award a record eight times from 1968 through 1975.

"It feels great," the soft-spoken Lidstrom said. "I really don't compare myself to Bobby Orr. He's someone one I would like to someday take a picture with. I don't think it's really sunk in yet that I've won three in a row. I thought MacInnis was going to win. He had a strong season and with (Chris) Pronger being out pretty much the whole season, I thought he was a big part of their team's success during the regular season. So I thought he was the favorite to win it."

The Hart Trophy as the regular season most valuable player went to Colorado's Peter Forsberg. The gifted Forsberg also took home the Art Ross Trophy as the leading scorer during the regular season. Forsberg scored 29 goals and 77 points in 75 games during the regular season and helped turn the Colorado season around. Forsberg also led the NHL in assists and shared the plus/minus lead with teammate Milan Hejduk at plus-52.

"I thought it was going to be tight and I'm really happy about it," Forsberg said after beating out New Jersey's Martin Brodeur and Vancouver's Markus Naslund for the Hart. "It's a little unexpected. Individual awards really come second, but of course it feels pretty good to have your name on them with the other unbelievable players that won it before. It's a great honor for me too to be here today receiving these awards, but it's a team sport. To be honest, I would trade those two for a Stanley Cup.

"It's a great honor to be on this award with players like Guy (Lafleur) and (Wayne) Gretzky and (Mario) Lemieux. I want to thank my teammates because without them you can't really do anything out on the ice. Fortunately I've played with a good team for a long time and I want to thank them, especially my linemates, Milan Hejduk and Alex Tanguay this year.

Brodeur, fresh off a Stanley Cup triumph Monday night in New Jersey, won his first Vezina Trophy as the League's top goaltender and also shared the William M. Jennings Trophy (lowest goals-against average) with the Philadelphia Flyers' tandem of Roman Cechmanek and Robert Esche.

The Vezina was a great personal triumph for Brodeur who had come up short against Dominik Hasek in past seasons. In 2003, Brodeur out-polled Ed Belfour of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars for the trophy. Brodeur was Vezina runner-up in 1997 and 1998 and was third in 2001.

Peter Forsberg took home the Hart Trophy as the regular season MVP and the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's points leader.
"It's kind of nice to be able to get it off my back a little bit," Brodeur said. "Everybody was always like 'I can't believe you don't have a Vezina.' They were always asking me that question all the time, but now that's over and I got it. It's definitely nice. It's a great accomplishment and I'm really excited about it."

"Obviously this is a team award and basically all I'm doing is collecting this for the guys back home," Esche said of winning the Jennings Trophy. He appeared in 30 regular-season games and registered a 9-3 record, 2.20 GAA and .907 save percentage. Cechmanek, recently traded to Los Angeles, handled the bulk of the work for Philadelphia last season.

Rookie honors in the form of the Calder Trophy went to St. Louis Blues defenseman Barret Jackman. The rock-solid Jackman beat out a formidable rookie pair in Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Henrik Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings.

"I really didn't think I was going to win this," Jackman said. "I was up against two great guys, Rick Nash and Henrik Zetterberg, who had great years. Fortunately I play with a great group of guys, a great defense and a chance to play with Al (MacInnis) which is a life-long dream. It probably helped me win the trophy."

While MacInnis and the Blues' defensive corps helped the young defender have a successful rookie campaign, Jackman gave most of the credit to his mom, Mary Jane, who has stuck by him through thick and thin in hockey career.

"This is for you Mom. She is probably the biggest reason I am where I am today." - Barret Jackman
"She's been a big part of my life," Jackman said. "She's pushed me and backed me my whole career. This is for you Mom. She is probably the biggest reason I am where I am today."

The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship was won by Toronto's Alexander Mogilny, who was a first-time finalist for the award. Mogilny beat out and another first-timer in Dallas' Mike Modano and one repeater in Lidstrom.

The Jack Adams Award for top coaching honors went to Minnesota's Jacques Lemaire, a two-time winner. Lemaire won the award in 1994 with the New Jersey Devils. The Minnesota coach, who beat out Ottawa's Jacques Martin and Tampa's John Tortorella, led the Wild to a Stanley Cup Playoff berth in its third NHL season with a 42-29-10-1 record for 95 points, a 22-point improvement over 2001-2002.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey, was won by Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings. Yzerman made a triumphant return to action on Feb. 24 from offseason knee surgery, eight months after completing a dream season that included winning an Olympic Gold Medal and a Stanley Cup championship.

"I'm excited," the understated Yzerman said. "You get excited to win any award. I've played a long time and have had a lot of ups and downs and I'd like to think it isn't just because I had knee surgery and came back this year. I'd like to think that being nominated for this award is more than just what happened over the last 18 months."

"Jere is a guy that gives 100 percent every night to the team and to the game. I'd like to congratulate Jere as a teammate on a well deserved award." - Jere Lehtinen's teammate, Derian Hatcher, who accepted the award his behalf.
The Frank J. Selke Trophy for best defensive forward was claimed by Dallas' Jere Lehtinen, who edged New Jersey's John Madden and Minnesota's Wes Walz.

Lehtinen won the Selke in 1998 and 1999 and was third in 1997 and 2002.

Detroit's Brendan Shanahan won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded to a player for his leadership and humanitarian contribution to his community. Besides chipping in his share of offense each year for the Wings, Shanahan also likes to be involved in the community where he earns a living. The winger started a program in honor of his late father, who was a fire fighter, in Detroit to assist low-income families with the purchase and installation of smoke detectors because he was concerned with the number of unnecessary deaths in the city caused by house fires.

"Seriously this is a bit of an awkward feeling to come up and accept an award for doing what really comes naturally to so many hockey players over the years," Shanahan said. "I've had tremendous leadership from my peers in the game and really this award could really go to anyone on our team and several players throughout the NHL, but I am very excited and honored that they chose me this year."

The Maurice Richard Trophy, awarded to the player finishing the regular season as the League's top goal-scorer went to Colorado's Milan Hejduk, who finished the regular season with 50 goals.

June 12, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORONTO - Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, who became the third defenseman in NHL history to garner a berth on the NHL's First All-Star Team for six consecutive seasons, headlines the list of players named to the First Team this evening at the NHL Awards Show. Lidstrom joins Boston's Bobby Orr (eight consecutive years, from 1968 through 1975) and Montreal's Doug Harvey (seven consecutive years, 1952 through 1958) on this exclusive list.
Lidstrom, who was a top selection on 61 of 62 ballots, led all players in ice time per game (29:20), ranked third in plus-minus (+40) and finished third in scoring among defensemen with 62 points (18 goals, 44 assists) in 82 games.

Vancouver Canucks linemates Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi, who finished second and fifth, respectively, in NHL scoring this season with 104 and 97 points, also earned places on the First Team. Naslund earned his second consecutive nomination at left wing, Bertuzzi his first career nod on right wing. It marked the first time that wings on the same line earned First Team berths in the same season since Anaheim's Paul Kariya (LW) and Teemu Selanne (RW) in 1997.

Joining Lidstrom, Naslund and Bertuzzi on the First Team are Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, a first-time selection at goaltender; Al MacInnis of the St. Louis Blues, who earned his fourth First Team berth on defense; and Peter Forsberg of the Colorado Avalanche, who garnered his third career First Team selection at center.

The Second Team features four players making debuts on an NHL All-Star Team: goaltender Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars and his Dallas teammate, defenseman Derian Hatcher, plus center Joe Thornton of the Boston Bruins and right wing Milan Hejduk of the Colorado Avalanche. They are joined by Washington Capitals defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who earned his second career Second Team berth, and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim left wing Paul Kariya, making his second appearance on the Second Team to go with three First Team selections.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season. Following is a summary of the voting:

Naja, 31 Tore sind für nen Defensiv-Stürmer schon sehr viel. Dazu noch +39....
Unverdient würde ich das jetzt nicht nennen...

Da würde ich jemand anderen anführen... Obwohl der, den ich meine, eigentlich noch zuwenig Trophies erhalten hat, denn für die Filippo-Inzaghi-Trophy für den Schwalben-König der Liga kommt nur er in Frage...
