Viertlängstes Play-off-Spiel der NHL-Geschichte

Anaheim gewinnt nach fünf Verlängerungen

Die Mighty Ducks of Anaheim und New Jersey Devils gehen mit einer 1:0-Führung in die "best-of-seven"-Serie der zweiten Play-off-Runde in der nordamerikanischen Eishockey-Profiliga NHL.

Während Anaheim einen hart umkämpften 4:3-Sieg nach Verlängerung bei den Dallas Stars einfuhr, gelang New Jersey ein klarer 3:0-Erfolg über Tampa Bay.

"Wir haben in der neutralen Zone gute Arbeit geleistet und Tampa unter Druck gesetzt. Das war der Schlüssel zum Sieg", freute sich New Jersey Kapitän Scott Stevens über den klaren Erfolg seines Teams. Jamie Langenbrunner, John Madden und Turner Stevenson erzielten die Treffer für die Gastgeber - allesamt im Schlussdrittel.

Fünf Verlängerungen in Dallas

Insgesamt 18.532 meist enttäuschte Zuschauer in Dallas sahen die 3:4-Schlappe der Stars nach Verlängerung gegen Anaheim. Sage und schreibe fünf Verlängerungen waren nötig, ehe im American Airlines Center die Gäste nach einem Treffer von Petr Sykora jubeln konnten. Es war die viertlängste Partie in der Play-off-Geschichte der NHL. Für Sykora war es der erste Play-off-Treffer seit seinem Tor in den "Stanley-Cup-Finals 2001". Zuvor hatten Jason Krog, Rob Niedermayer und Steve Rucchin für Anaheim, sowie Derian Hatcher, Jason Arnott und Brenden Morrow für Dallas mit ihren Treffern in der abwechslungsreichen und unterhaltsamen Partie für ein 3:3 in der regulären Spielzeit gesorgt.

Wenn Anaheim so weiter macht, dann wird es ganz schön eng für den Rest der Liga, vor allem JS Giguere wird zum absoluten Conn Smyth Favoriten...

Martin Brodeur und Colin White(NJD) vereiteln gemeinsam eine Chance von Dave Andreychuk(TAM).

In einer lange Zeit von den Defensivkräften bestimmten Partie zwischen den New Jersey Devils und Tampa Bay Lightning mussten die Gäste aus Florida erst in der Schlussphase ihre erste Auswärtsniederlage in den diesjährigen Playoffs hinnehmen. Sie unterlagen in der Continental Airlines Arena von East Rutherford durch drei späte Gegentreffer von Jamie Langenbrunner(48.), John Madden(52.) und Turner Stevenson(58.) den Devils nicht unverdient mit 3-0.
Fast 2 1/2 Drittel lang hatten sich die Lightning auf ihren Schlussmann Nikolai Khabibulin verlassen können, doch dann schnappte sich Langenbrunner den Puck in der neutralen Zone, zog hinter der blauen Linie ab und sein Schuss ging durch die Schoner von Khabibulin.
Notgedrungen mussten die Gäste nun ihre Abwehr entblösen und die Devils nutzten dies eiskalt aus.
Einen relativ ruhigen Abend verlebte dagegen New Jerseys Schlussmann Martin Brodeur. Nur 15 Saves mussten die Statistiker bei seinem dritten Playoff-Shutout in diesem Jahr, den zweiten in Folge, verbuchen. Einigermaßen gefährlich waren aber nur eine handvoll Angriffe der Lightning, zu wenig um in New Jersey bestehen zu können.

Zum Auftakt ihrer Playoffserie lieferten sich die Dallas Stars und Migty Ducks of Anaheim gleich ein Marathonmatch über fünf Verlängerungen. Nach 141 Minuten effektiver Spielzeit um 00:34 Uhr Ortszeit setzte Petr Sykora(141.) mit seinem ersten Playofftor dem kraftraubenden Treiben im fünftlängsten Spiel der NHL-Historie ein Ende und führte die Mighty Ducks of Anaheim zu einem 4-3 Erfolg.
Bereits waren die Kalifornier, die durchaus an ihre in der Runde zuvor gezeigten Leistungen als sie die Detroit Red Wings mit einem 'Sweep' aus dem Playoffgeschehen warfen anknüpfen konnten, dem Sieg sehr nahe gewesen. Jason Krog(14.), Rob Niedermayer(25.sh) und Steve Rucchin(29.) schossen die Ducks in der ersten halben Stunde mit 3-1 in Front. Das einzige Erfolgserlebnis der Hausherren hatte bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt Teamkapitän Derian Hatcher(18.) erzielt.
In der noch verbleibenden Zeit der regulären Spielzeit verstärkten die Texaner noch einmal den Druck auf das Gehäuse von Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Jason Arnott(37.) vor der zweiten Pause und Brenden Morrow(58.) kurz vor Spielende ließen Anaheims Schlussmann kaum eine Abwehrchance und retteten ihr Team in die Verlängerung(en), in denen Akteure beider Mannschaften mehrmals den Siegtreffer auf der Kelle hatten. In der dritten Overtime gelang Steve Thomas das vermeintliche 'Game Winning Goal' für die Ducks. Nach Videobeweis wurde dieses Tor jedoch als mit dem Schlittschuh erzielt nicht anerkannt - eine äußerst umstrittene Entscheidung da eine Kickbewegung mit dem Schlittschuh nicht zwingend erkennbar war.

Game 1: Anaheim @ Dallas 4:3 OT

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim would not be denied.
Petr Sykora scored 48 seconds into the fifth overtime to end the fourth-longest game in playoff history and give the Ducks a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars in the opener of their Western Conference semifinal series.

After Anaheim had the apparent game-winner disallowed late in the third overtime, Sykora left no doubt as the marathon approached the six-hour mark.
Mike Leclerc battled for the puck behind the net with Dallas defenseman Derian Hatcher, enabling teammate Adam Oates to take possession. One of the premier playmakers in NHL history, Oates backhanded a pass to the top of the slot, where Sykora let go a wrister that hit Stars winger Jere Lehtinen and deflected past goaltender Marty Turco.
Sykora's first playoff goal since the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals came on the game's 117th shot, the only one of the fifth overtime.
"It feels great right now," Sykora said. "Hopefully, this may get me out of the slump I'm in and back on track. I realize I haven't been scoring the last six or seven games. This is just a goal for me, but hopefully, it will lead to bigger and better things."
"It was a bang-bang play," said Turco, who made 50 saves. "That's the way it goes. We need to concentrate on emotionally getting back and preparing for Game Two."
Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 60 saves in another stellar Game One performance. In the opener of the conference quarterfinals at Detroit, he stopped 63 shots as Anaheim pulled out a 2-1 triple-overtime win en route to a stunning four-game sweep of the defending Stanley Cup champions.
"Jiggy has been unbelievable every night and it's nice that we could hang in there and get him a win," Ducks defenseman Keith Carney said.
The teams have less than two days to recoup before Dallas hosts Game Two on Saturday afternoon.
"Tomorrow is going to be a light day," said Stars center Pierre Turgeon, who made his postseason debut following ankle surgery. "It takes a lot of energy. After a game like this, you feel tired. You just need to drink a lot of water and get back on track."
Anaheim appeared to win it with 5:19 to go in the third overtime when Steve Rucchin got a rebound of Carney's shot in front of the net and banked a shot off Turco's left shoulder and into the net. But the goal was disallowed by the video replay official, who ruled Ducks winger Steve Thomas dislodged the net while tied up with defenseman Stephane Robidas.
"I saw it go in. I didn't see the net come off," Thomas said. "I thought we had won the game. It's a tough one to swallow at that point."
"When they disallowed our goal, the momentum changed in their favor and we had to regroup and stick together," Sykora added. "We were able to do that and pull out the win."
With just over a minute to go in the third extra period, Dallas' Stu Barnes beat Giguere from the left faceoff circle but put a shot off the crossbar.
Stars defenseman Philippe Boucher scored seven minutes into the fourth overtime, but his shot came a second after play was whistled down for an offsides infraction.
"I thought we had ample chances in the third period and first couple of overtimes. You just have to find a way to bury those chances," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said.
Anaheim was less than three minutes away from winning in regulation, but Brenden Morrow tipped Robidas' right point shot and the puck fluttered over Giguere with 2:47 remaining.
It capped a comeback for Dallas, which erased a 3-1 deficit.
"We kind of stubbed our toe when we were up, 3-1," Thomas admitted. "It was demoralizing when they tied it, but we stuck with it."
The Ducks grabbed the lead 13:08 into the opening period on Jason Krog's third playoff goal, but Dallas tied it 4 1/2 minutes later on Hatcher's first goal in 34 postseason 34 games.
Anaheim appeared to take control in the second period as Rob Niedermayer ended a three-year playoff drought with a shorthanded goal at 4:04 and Rucchin made it 3-1 at 8:58.
But Jason Arnott got the Stars within a goal with 3:28 to go in the period.
"That was playoff hockey at it's finest. You have to get your head up," Tippett said. "You have to regain as much energy as possible over the next day and a half and get ready to go."

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- A long layoff did nothing to slow Jamie Langenbrunner, John Madden, Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils.
Langenbrunner and Madden scored third-period goals and Brodeur recorded his third shutout of this year's playoffs as the Devils blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-0, in the opener of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
New Jersey had a week off after eliminating the Boston Bruins in five games in the opening round. While the Devils needed some time to get going offensively, they smothered the Lightning by yielding just 15 shots - seven over the first two periods.
"We did a good job in the neutral zone, taking away their speed and transition game, forcing them to dump (the puck)," New Jersey captain Scott Stevens said. "I think that was the key to the game."
Langenbrunner broke the scoreless tie with 12:19 to go in the third, fooling Nikolai Khabibulin with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line that may have ticked off Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina.
"It was a pretty lucky goal, but we'll take it," said Langenbrunner, who shares the playoff lead with six goals. "You never know, games turn on the weirdest things sometimes. The idea was to get the puck on the net as much as we could."
Less than four minutes later, Madden finished off a 3-on-1 by beating Khabibulin with a wrister from the inner edge of the right faceoff circle. The center of the Devils' checking line led the team in scoring in the conference quarterfinals with two goals and six assists.
Turner Stevenson capped the scoring with 2:51 to play as New Jersey remained the only unbeaten home team in the postseason at 4-0.
Brodeur was hardly tested en route to his third shutout of this year's playoffs. With just over five minutes remaining, he stopped Brad Richards shot from the right side and got enough of Vaclav Prospal's try on the rebound to send it off the left goalpost. Defenseman Colin White swept the puck out of danger.
"With it being 0-0 for a long time, you have to stay awake because that little mistake can cost you," he said. "I tried to stay in the game as much as possible and I had to make two big saves when it was 2-0."
It was the 16th career playoff shutout for Brodeur, giving him sole possession of second place on the all-time list.
"Marty was sharp," Devils coach Pat Burns said. "That's a tough game for a goaltender, when there's not a whole lot of chances that were being generated, especially in the first part of the game."
Game Two is Saturday afternoon at New Jersey.
"We are going to have to play better, and any chance we get, we are going to have to shoot," Tampa Bay center Vincent Lecavalier said. "Brodeur only had to stop seven shots in the first two periods. We need to get 20 or 25 shots on him and then you'll have a different ballgame."
The Lightning lost the first two games of the conference quarterfinals at home before reeling off four wins to eliminate the Washington Capitals.
"I don't think we competed too hard offensively," Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella said. "I think we showed them too much respect. We expect it to be very difficult to play against them, but I think we need to push a little harder - smart but harder."
Langebrunner's third playoff game-winner came off a turnover in the neutral zone. He took two strides over the blue line before wristing a shot that hit Kubina and bounced past Khabibulin.
"We had a lot of rust in the first period, and in the second period we had a lot of opportunities. In the third period, we were able to get the puck to go in," Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko said.
The odd-man rush that culminated in Madden's goal started when Stevens blocked a shot by defenseman Dan Boyle.
"We didn't score the first two periods, then Jamie got a bit of a lucky goal. I was surprised we scored right after that," said Madden, who has had a hand in nine of New Jersey's last 11 goals.
Stevenson's first playoff tally in nearly two years was a brilliant solo effort. He poked the puck around defenseman Jassen Cullimore inside the Lightning blue line, deked to his backhand and shoveled a shot over Khabibulin.

Oh nein ! Hoffentlich geht der Kelch dieses Jahr an uns vorbei. Hab keinen Bock, wieder so ne Anti-Mannschaft im Finale zu sehen, die ausser nem guten Torwart und vielen Overtime-Siegen garnichts zu bieten hat...
