Selanne Declines Player Option On Monday the San Jose Sharks learned that Teemu Selanne declined his player option for the 2003-04 season. His departure alters some of San Jose's plans for the upcoming 2003-04 season, but opens up other possibilities for Team Teal.
"We would have liked to have had Teemu back, but this will allow us to do some other things," said Sharks President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison. "We have some very good people working in our hockey department and they have been laying the groundwork for this possibility and what we might do next."
Selanne still cannot talk to other NHL teams until July 1, at which point he can talk to the 29 other NHL clubs as well as the Sharks.
Selanne's option was worth $6.5 million and while the Sharks may not go out and find one player at that price to replace the 28 and 29 goals he has registered the past two seasons, the money available might make another free agent pick up a reality or perhaps two.
“This allows us to explore our options,” said Jamison. “We’ve been talking about other possibilities and this decision now gives us a chance to pursue some of those. This decision may also have the potential to make us a bigger player in the free agent market than we would have been otherwise.”
It could also allow San Jose to move one or more of their draft picks this summer (they have six of the top 100 picks including the sixth and 21st overall in the first round) for a top six forward.
"Teemu chose not to exercise his option, but this organization will move forward," said Jamison. "We know what needs to be done to return to the postseason."
A big step in that process will be naming a new general manager and Jamison is close to completing his first round of interviews. Jamison said he is still on schedule to name a replacement in early May.
The NHL Entry Draft is June 21-22 and the unrestricted free agent signing period does not begin until July 1, giving the new general manager ample time to prepare for the two significant dates.
NEW NETS ARE COMING
After evaluating the nets used last season, the Sharks have placed a order for a new net which is considerably thinner in material and displays square patterns rather than diamond shaped, which is expected to earn high marks among San Jose fans. However, the nets are still en-route to HP Pavilion and once delivered will be raised for a display.
“We have a vendor who is ready, willing and excited to work with us on the new nets, but we have not been able to actually get the nets into our hands,” said Jamison. “Our vendor is working on getting them to us and we expect to have them and put them up for season ticket holders to come and look at this summer.”
The Sharks have also acknowledged other netting options but are confident that the newest version will be much more pleasing to hockey fans.
“We have explored some alternatives to the black netting, such as those used in St. Louis and Philadelphia but we have not reached a decision and our primary goal is to get the new nets we have order in and installed for viewing before we consider further changes,” said Jamison.
GM INTERVIEWS CONTINUE
Jamison had interviewed two-thirds of the candidates for the Sharks general manager position and is looking to meet with the remaining candidates in the coming days.
“I have interviewed six candidates to date and there are three others who I still plan on interviewing,” said Jamison. “We still have a goal of May 1 for a new general manager, we may extend that date a day or two but we are still on target. That will give us plenty of time to prepare for the events this summer.”
