Drei Jahre für Theodore
(06.09.2002)

Goalie Fichaud comes out of retirement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

MONTREAL -- Eric Fichaud's retirement didn't last long.

The goalie, a former first-round draft pick who retired last October, signed a one-year contract plus an option with the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.

Fichaud, 26, said he had lost the desire to play when he retired, but didn't rule out a return to the game.

After being drafted 16th in the 1994 draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Fichaud was traded to the New York Islanders in April 1995. He spent parts of three seasons with the Islanders before he was dealt to the Nashville Predators.

After one season in the Predators organization, Fichaud was sent to the Florida Panthers. Montreal claimed him on waivers on Feb. 11, 2000.

Fichaud was playing with the AHL's Manitoba Moose when he retired. He ended up playing 16 games in Germany.

His last NHL action came in the 2000-01 season, when he went 0-2 with a 3.87 goals-against average. He spent most of that season with the Montreal's AHL affiliate in Quebec City, going 23-20-3 record with a 3.07 GAA.

In 95 career NHL games, he's 22-47-10 with a 3.14 GAA.

The Canadiens also announced that defenseman Sheldon Souray will be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on his left wrist last week.

During Montreal's surprising playoff run last season, Souray played with a separated left shoulder and a cast on a broken bone in his left hand.

Souray, 26, played in only 34 games with the Canadiens last season, scoring three goals and adding five assists with 62 penalty minutes. He missed 48 games, mostly due to the wrist injury.

Canadiens sign Zednik to two-year contract

MONTREAL (AP) -- Richard Zednik, the Montreal Canadiens' only no-show at training camp, signed a two-year contract Wednesday.

Zednik, 26, will earn $1.7 million this season and $1.8 million in 2003-04.

David Schatia, Zednik's agent, said an impasse between the two sides was resolved when the Canadiens agreed to substantial bonus clauses, including one with a charitable aim.

Zednik will receive a $50,000 bonus if plays in only 10 games. He would then donate the money to the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation, which would use it to buy tickets for underprivileged children, Schatia said.

"Richard wanted to give something back to the community," Schatia said. "I think it's the first time it's been done with the Canadiens, but we've done it for other players," the agent said.

Martin Havlat of the Ottawa Senators and Scott Hartnell of the Nashville Predators have had similar donation clauses in their contracts.

"Richard wanted to play here and this is the way we resolved the situation," Schatia said.

Zednik, 26, earned $765,000 last season when he reached personal highs in goals (22), points (44) and games played (82) last season and led the club in shots on goal with 249.

The right wing missed the Canadiens' five-day training camp in Vail, Colo., that ended Tuesday.

Zednik scored four goals and added four assists in the first four playoff games of Montreal's first-round upset of Boston before he was knocked unconscious by an elbow from Bruins defenseman Kyle McLaren.

Zednik, a 10th-round draft pick by Washington in 1994, was acquired from the Capitals along with Jan Bulis and a first-round draft pick on March 13, 2001, for Trevor Linden, Dainius Zubrus and a second-round pick.
