LEAF-ING?
Curtis Joseph will decide today if he will stay with Toronto or throw himself into a free-agent market in which the Rangers will be major shoppers.
AP
July 1, 2002 --
While bracing for the money to fall out of the sky like confetti at those annual Cup parades at Canyon of Heroes:
* Curtis Joseph is returning from a vacation in Cuba to Toronto late this afternoon, at which time he will meet with agent Don Meehan and decide whether to remain a Maple Leaf or solicit offers on the unrestricted market. If the Rangers are unable to lure Bobby Holik or Billy Guerin early in the day after full-court presses, the mandate for Glen Sather to land CuJo will grow exponentially, as likely will the offer.
* The Red Wings, who are targeting Guerin, yesterday were offering Chris Chelios two years at just shy of $12 million in order to keep the 40-year-old from becoming a free agent. The Norris runner-up remains extremely interested in a Ranger alternative, so long as that alternative includes $14M over the next two seasons. Again, if Cablevision's money isn't green enough to land Holik or Guerin - the latter of whom received a midnight visit at his home outside Boston from assistant coach Terry O'Reilly - Sather may blow out the armored car on a dramatic improvement of the back line.
* If unable or unwilling to meet Chelios' price, the Rangers are expected to meet Darius Kasparaitis' asking price of at least $25 million over five years. They'll be opposed by the Islanders, whose pursuit of Tony Amonte is expected to face serious competition from the Stars (if they can't get Guerin), Bruins, and Sharks, if Teemu Selanne gets away.
* Ranger fall-backs include Robert Lang and Luke Richardson, both of whom are consolation prizes, neither of whom is worth toting home. For if the Blueshirts cannot successfully recruit a combination of at least two of the Holik-Guerin-Joseph-Chelios-Kasparaitis pool, it would be better to fold 'em than draw those two cards.
