MALONE, N.Y. -- Former NHL forward Patrick Cote was charged with possessing more than 30 pounds of marijuana Friday.
Cote, of Quebec, was seen speeding through a 30 mph zone in Malone, N.Y., 10 miles south of the Canadian border, early Friday. When officers attempted to stop Cote, he led police on a brief chase, Malone Assistant Chief Ron Reyome said.
The officer interviewing Cote became suspicious, and border patrol officers were called in. The marijuana was then discovered, Reyome said.
The 27-year-old Cote was also charged with speeding and failing to comply.
Cote was arraigned Friday morning and sent to Franklin County jail. Bail was set at $50,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
Cote was selected by Dallas in the second round of the 1995 draft and spent six seasons in the NHL with the Stars, Nashville and Edmonton.
Cote also played with Michigan of the IHL and Hamilton of the AHL. He most recently played with Laval of the Quebec senior league.
