Zur Situation der Leafs und den Verletzten:
Leafs reportedly facing medical conundrum
Mats Sundin has said he's close to returning to the Leafs' lineup after suffering a wrist injury. However, a report in Thursday's Toronto Globe and Mail says that Sundin's injury is more serious than he is letting on, and he might not return until Game 6 of this series at the earliest. That would be five weeks from the day he suffered his second wrist injury.
Sundin originally suffered a stress reaction, or less serious fracture, in the first round of the playoffs but kept playing with the injury frozen by painkillers. He suffered a complete break of the ulna in the third game of the playoffs on April 23.
The Globe reports that Sundin is suffereing from a serious injury known as DRUJ (pronounced drudge) by medical professionals. The acronym refers to the distal radial ulnar joint, one of two main wrist bones. Healing time is longer than the standard 4-6 weeks.
The circular ulna is one of the slower bones in the body to heal because it is not surrounded by a lot of body tissue, which protects it and helps the healing process, according to the Globe.
Also in Thursday's Globe, sources say Leafs defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich, sidelined since early February because of a blood clot in his leg, is considered healthy enough to play by both his and the Leafs' doctors. The sources say that the Leafs' medical team feels the clot has shrunk enough that the risk of serious complications is small enough to be acceptable if Yushkevich plays.
But, the source told the newspaper that Steve Stavro, chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, has concerns over potential legal and physical fallout if anything happens to Yushkevich. The newspaper says that Quinn and Leafs president Ken Dryden both have asked Stavro to let Yushkevich play. The chairman says no.
Dryden denies there is a rift and told the Globe and Mail the medical team agrees with team management.
"We are all on the same page and that is there is significant risk if (Yushkevich) is still on blood-thinners when he plays," Dryden said.
