Svoboda retires from NHL after 18 seasons
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Bay defenseman Petr Svoboda, who hadn't played since suffering a concussion in December 2000, retired Wednesday after 18 seasons in the NHL.
The 36-year-old native of the Czech Republic played in 1,028 games with Montreal, Buffalo, Philadelphia and the Lightning, who acquired him from the Flyers in 1998.
Svoboda was an NHL All-Star in 2000 and finishes with 58 goals and 341 assists.
He sustained the career-ending concussion on Dec. 14, 2000, in a game at Phoenix.
Svoboda was drafted fifth overall by Montreal in 1984 and began his career with the Canadiens during the 1984-85 season. He helped Montreal win the Stanley Cup in his second year.
One of the highlights of Svoboda's career came during the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, when he scored the goal that captured the gold medal in the Czech Republic's 1-0 win over Russia.
