Final CSS rankings for 2002 Draft
April 25, 2002

TORONTO - Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester of the Western Hockey League's Medicine Hat Tigers is the top rated North American skater in the NHL's final ranking of draft eligible players for the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The 6'3½", 206-pound Bouwmeester finished third in scoring among WHL defensemen with 61 points (12 goals, 49 assists) in 61 games and was elected to the WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star Team. Bouwmeester, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, was a member of the Canadian national junior team that captured the Silver medal at the 2002 World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic and was named to the tournament's All-Star Team.
The final ranking is compiled by the NHL's Central Scouting Service and features the top 180 skaters in North America, top 30 North American goaltenders, as well as the top 150 European players and top nine European goaltenders.

The 2002 NHL Entry Draft will take place on June 22-23 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

Rick Nash, a left wing for the London Knights (OHL), is the number two-rated player. The 6'3", 188-pound native of Brampton, Ontario was the youngest player on Canada's national junior team at the 2002 World Junior Championship. Nash finished the season with 72 points (32-40-72) in 54 games, leading his team in goals.

The top five positions are rounded out by Ryan Whitney (Boston, MA), a defenseman with Boston University and the top rated U.S.-born prospect; forward Joffrey Lupul (Edmonton, Alta.) of the Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL); and right wing Scottie Upshall (Ft. McMurray, Alta.) of the WHL's Kamloops Blazers. Upshall captured a Silver Medal with Canada at the 2002 World Junior Championship, while Whitney performed for the U.S. national junior team.

Jeff Deslauriers (St-Jean-Richelieu, Que.) of the QMJHL's Chicoutimi Sagueneens is the number one ranked goaltender in North America. He is followed by Todd Ford (Calgary, Alta.) of the Swift Current Broncos (WHL) and Maxime Daigneault (St-Jacques-le-Mineur, Que.) of the Val d'Or Foreurs (QMJHL).

Finnish goaltender Kari Lehtonen is the top rated goaltender in Europe. Lehtonen performed for Finland at the 2001 and 2002 World Junior Championships, capturing two Bronze medals. He was named the tournament's Best Goaltender in 2002.

The top rated European skater is Joni Pitkanen of Finland (Karpat, Finnish League). The 6'3", 202-pound defenseman performed for Finland at the 2002 World Junior Championship, capturing a Bronze medal. Pitkanen finished third among the tournament's top scoring defensemen (1-3-4 in seven games). Russian left wing Alexander Semin (rated #2), Czech center Jiri Hudler (rated #3) and defensemen Denis Grebeshkov (rated 4th), a defenseman with the Gold medal-winning Russian team at the 2002 World Junior Championship, and Michal Barinka (rated 5th) of the Czech Republic complete the top five prospects in Europe.

The OHL is well represented in the 2002 final report with 11 prospects ranked in the first round. The WHL and the U.S. collegiate system follow, each with eight first round prospects.

In addition to 17 Canadian-born players ranked in the first round, there are nine U.S.-born players: Whitney; #9 center Christopher Higgins (Smithtown, NY) of Yale University (ECAC); #11 center Jim Slater (Petoskey, MI) of Michigan State University (CCHA); #13 left wing Eric Nystrom (Syosset, NY), son of former New York Islanders forward Bob Nystrom, of the University of Michigan (CCHA); #14 forward Rob Globke (Farmington, MI) of the University of Notre Dame (CCHA); #17 right wing Barry Tallackson (Grafton, ND) of the University of Minnesota; #19 defenseman Keith Ballard (Baudette, MN) of the University of Minnesota (WCHA); #25 defenseman Matt Jones (Downers Grove, IL) of the University of North Dakota and #30 defenseman Brian Lee (Berrien Springs, MI) of the OHL's Erie Otters.

Florida - Bouwmeester *leider*

68. Yannic Seidenberg Geburtsjahr 1984

90. Felix Petermann 1984

Other Notables
Adrian Grygiel, RW 1983
Martin Hinterstocker, LW 1983
Sebastian Jones, D 1982
Daniel Kreutzer, LW 1979
Christoph Melischko, C 1983
Martin Morczinietz, G 1984
Andreas Morczinietz, RW 1978
Max Seyller, C 1984
Christoph Ullmann, C 1983

Sulzer won't be available in Toronto

Posted by Oliver Janz on 05/23/2002

Alexander Sulzer did not opt-in

It's confirmed. According to his agent Stefan Metz, Alexander Sulzer did not opt-in for the NHL Entry Draft 2002. Germany lost his top prospect for the upcoming Draft on June 23 and 24 in Toronto, Ontario. The Central Scouting Bureau listed Sulzer on position 36 at the European Skaters Ranking. The Player and the agent discussed the opportunities and made the decision in order to earn an earlier spot in the Draft 2003.

The 18 year old defender played only 18 games and missed the U18 World Junior Championships. According to U18 coach Jim Setters, "Sulzer is a leader in his age category, we missed him pretty much at the U18 WJC."

Several prospects will pass this years draft. Thomas Vanek, Mark Stuart, Danny Richmond for example.

Yannic Seidenberg opt-in

After Sulzer's decision, forward Yannic Seidenberg is now Germany's top prospect for the upcoming Entry Draft in Toronto. Seidenberg, 18 years old, was the topscorer of Germany's U18 team, which relegated from the highest level. The CSB ranked him at position 68. The third CSB ranked German is Felix Petermann. The defender from third division team EV Füssen is the #90 of the European Skaters.

Draftee Movement

Ottawa Senators' Stefan Schauer left second league team SC Riessersee for DEL champion Kölner Haie. Their second German pick from 2001, Christoph Schubert, signed a two year contract with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers. Washington Capitals draft choice Robert Müller left Mannheim and will play the next season for the Krefeld Pinguine. Müller's backup place in Mannheim will be owned by Dimitri Pätzold in the next season. The Sharks draftee played for Köln last year.

Still under contract are ...

Dennis Seidenberg (Philadelphia) in Mannheim till 2005, Marcel Goc (San Jose) in Mannheim till 2005 and Christian Ehrhoff (San Jose) in Krefeld till 2003.

Where could we watch Ehelechner?

Goalie Patrick Ehelechner agreed to terms with second league team EV Landshut and DEL member Hannover Scorpions, confirmed by his father. Ehelechner will be the backup of Nolan McDonald (former Vancouver Canucks Draft Pick) in Landshut and the number three for the Scorpions.

Hannover has Canadian goaltender Andrew Verner as the number one under contract and will most likely sign a German backup goalie in the next days. Candidates are Björn Leonhardt (last years' #2), Mark Röhrig (from the own youth system) and Kai Fischer (Colorado Draft Pick). Ehelechner will act as the emergency back up to replace one of the two regular goalies if they get injured.

Besides, two teams from the CHL are interested in drafting him at the CHL Import Draft if he's willing to come over to North America. After the news from his father, this movement shouldn't happen.

However, it looks like 10-25 games for Landshut and 0-10 games for Hannover. Plus the U20 WJC in 2002. Enough to develop and impress the scouts.

Where are the other prospects for 2003 playing in 2002/2003?

Patrick Koslow will be the backup of Swedish goalie Magnus Eriksson in Augsburg (DEL). Koslow will also play for their farmteam, the Augsburger EV. Another Goalie, Martin Morczinietz, could be the number three of the Kölner Haie next season. He got invited for the first weeks of training in Köln.

Danny Albrecht left the juniors of ES Weißwasser to step into the pro level. He signed a one year contract with ERC Haßfurt of the second league. Kai Hospelt (Köln Jr.) and Markus Kink (Riessersee Jr.) are going to play for the Kölner Haie junior team - and they are also at the pro team roster.

Raphael Kapzan will most likely stay in Landshut for one more season. Alexander Sulzer (see top of the page) will play with Kaufbeuren in the second league. The future of Frank Hördler is open, is current team has massive financial problems. Axel Hackert will most likely stay in Heilbronn, he's currently in negotiations with a DEL team from the south of Germany.

Goc, Goc, Goc and Goc?

One month before the playoffs of 2001/2002: Mannheim signed Marcel Goc till 2005. One weeks after the world championships: Mannheim signed his brother Sascha Goc (Tampa Bay Lightning) till 2004.

There are also rumuors that their father, Josef Goc, will coach a team of Mannheim's youth system next season. He was the midget coach in Schwenningen last season. One of his players was his third son, Nicolai. The 15 year old defender should join his father and his older brothers and also went to Mannheim. Nicolai could play for their Under-18 team, which won the championship in 2002.

Josef, Sascha, Marcel and Nicolai reunited in Mannheim? It looks like.

Beautiful -- and Thin
by Lynn Zinser
ESPN The Magazine http://espn.go.com/magazine/

The first thing you need to know about the 2002 NHL draft class is that it's weak. The second thing you need to know is that the first four picks this year will make everybody forget the first thing.

Need a franchise goalie? Take 18-year-old Finnish keeper Kari Lehtonen. Looking for something in a complete two-way forward? Rick Nash, 18, is for you. But if you have your heart set on that rarest of birds, an 18-year-old defenseman who's ready to play in the NHL, then snap up Jay Bouwmeester, a big (6'4", 204) banger who can flat-out fly.

"Bobby Orr is the best skater I've seen," says Bouwmeester's Medicine Hat (Alberta) coach, Bob Loucks. "And Jay is second. He'll do more than just stay up. He'll be a contributor his first year. He's just that good."

Unlike most tub-thumpers for junior phenoms, Loucks -- who once coached Chris Pronger, the last 18-year-old defenseman pick to jump straight to the NHL (1993) -- merits a second listen: "Jay's quite a bit ahead of where Chris was at that age."

Bouwmeester is leaving all that talk to others. In fact, he leaves most any kind of talk to others. "I just try to have fun and play the game," says the Edmonton native, in what for him is a virtual soliloquy.

Nash, who hails from just outside Toronto and played junior hockey in nearby London, Ont., never stops chasing the puck. And once he gets it, he never gets knocked off it. Think Peter Forsberg. Not only did Nash lead his team in goals, he also played great defense. The combo of scoring touch, speed and toughness has a few observers speculating that he might be picked No. 1. "Every time Rick touches the puck, he does something exciting," says Stan Butler, who coached Nash on Canada's World Junior squad at the 2002 championships. "He's coachable, he's quiet and he listens. He understands right away."

Bouwmeester is still the consensus choice to go No. 1 on June 22, but after that, it's a toss-up between Nash and two Finns -- D Joni Pitkanen and Lehtonen. The goalie won a silver medal playing for Finland at the 2001 World Juniors and a bronze in 2002. He left NHL observers at hockey's biggest annual talent show buzzing about his poise and quickness. As for the slick-skating Pitkanen, teams do not easily pass up quality defenseman.

"One thing's for sure," says Florida GM Rick Dudley. "There'll be no mistakes in the first picks, regardless of the order."

For four teams -- Florida, Atlanta, Columbus and Tampa Bay -- that's great news. For the other 26, well, the first thing you need to know ...

Eight Men In
by E.J. Hradek
ESPN The Magazine

Hockey fans who expect entry-draft picks to produce immediate results are following the wrong sport. Be patient. NHL draftees are much younger than their NFL counterparts, and the final grade for any draft class can't be posted for several years. (Case in point: Carolina's Jeff O'Neill -- fifth overall in 1994 -- didn't blossom into a big-time player until 1999-00). Say hello to the skaters we think will go in the top eight in this year's entry draft in Toronto, June 22-23. But don't expect to greet most of them again for a good while.

1. Florida -- JAY BOUWMEESTER, D (Medicine Hat, WHL). Scouts zeroed in on him when he was 15. At 6'4", 206, he's a rare package of size and skill. Can be a franchise D. But he's a quiet kid, and some scouts wonder if he really wants stardom. Caution: disappointing in international competition.

2. Atlanta -- RICK NASH, LW (London, OHL). Wowed scouts at the Under-18 tournament last summer. At 6'3", 188, he can play power or finesse. Some feel he's got a higher ceiling than Bouwmeester. But the Thrashers already have talented young forwards in Ilya Kovalchuk and Dany Heatley. They might trade the pick for an established player.

3. Columbus -- JONI PITKANEN, D (Karpat, Finland). Smooth skater glides like a young Nicklas Lidstrom. Played lights out for Team Finland at the World Junior Championships last winter. He'll fit nicely alongside Rostislav Klesla, Columbus' first-ever selection (fourth overall) in the 2000 entry draft. MJ alert: Pitkanen sticks out his tongue during games.

4. Tampa Bay -- KARI LEHTONEN, G (Jokerit, Finland). The tall, lean Finn (6'3", 189) is the top-rated goaltender in this draft. He rounds out a group of four (with Bouwmeester, Nash and Pitkanen) who stand above the rest of their class. Lehtonen uses a hybrid butterfly style but, because of his size, he can still cover the top part of the net with his upper torso. Impressed scouts with his poise in major international competitions.

5. Pittsburgh -- RYAN WHITNEY, D (Boston U., Hockey East). The big defenseman (6'3", 200) enjoyed a strong freshman year at BU. Like Bouwmeester and Pitkanen, Whitney is an effective offensive player. Hockey teams need quality defensemen like baseball teams need top pitching. Good building block for the Penguins.

6. Nashville -- JOFFREY LUPUL, RW (Medicine Hat, WHL). Offensively challenged Predators hope this goal-scoring wing is still available when they step to the podium. Lupul, a junior teammate of Bouwmeester's, posted a WHL-best 56 goals and ranked second in scoring with 106 points. Scouts say Lupul possesses a quick first stride and excellent hockey sense.

7. Anaheim -- PETR TATICEK, C (Sault Ste. Marie, OHL). New GM Bryan Murray likely will settle on Taticek, who's viewed by many scouts as the smartest player in the draft. True, Einstein never won a Stanley Cup. But the 6'2", 188-pound, Czech-born pivot impressed junior coach Craig Hartsburg not only with his ice smarts but with his skills and his ability to fit in during his first season in tough North American hockey.

8. Minnesota -- STEVE EMINGER, D (Kitchener, OHL). A solid all-around defender with good offensive tools. Totaled 59 points in 65 games for Kitchener. If the Wild don't share our take on Eminger, look for them to go for Chicoutimi G Jeff Deslauriers.
