Caroliona-New Jersey: PO-Stand 2:0

Battaglia's first career playoff goal a winner

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A team not given much of a chance against the New Jersey Devils for a second straight year is now in the driver's seat.
Bates Battaglia scored the game-winner 15:26 into overtime and rookie Erik Cole had his second goal in as many games Friday night as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Devils 2-1 to go up 2-0 in their best-of-seven first-round series.
"They're all shocked," Devils captain Scott Stevens said of his teammates.
Battaglia's first career playoff goal came off a backhanded tip after defenseman Marek Malik held in an attempted clearing play by the Devils.
"I probably do that 100 times in practice," Battaglia said when asked about his deflection. "I am there in front of the net more than I am in any other position on the ice. I am always trying to get a piece of any shot."
The return of key starters Joe Nieuwendyk (flu) and Petr Sykora (bruised ankle) couldn't help the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions avoid falling into an 0-2 hole in a first-round series for the first time since 1993. That year, the Devils lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in five games.
"Two games down is not the best situation to be in but you can't hang your head," Devils center Bobby Holik said. "There's nothing we can do about the first two games now. It just comes down to scoring more goals."
The Devils return home to play host to Game 3 on Sunday having scored just two goals in 135 minutes against a team they outscored 20-8 in the postseason last year.
"We are proud of the teamwork that has been presented in these games," said Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe, who has 64 saves in the two victories. "But both wins didn't come easy. We had an extra, seventh player on the ice, and that was our crowd. They've been exceptional."
After falling more than 3,000 short of a sellout in Game 1, the Hurricanes had a capacity towel-waving crowd of 18,700 going crazy most of the game.
"I've got a headache from yelling at guys who are two feet away from me because they can't hear what you're saying," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "I have never experienced anything like that in my life. I was hoarse five minutes into the game. One linesman came over before the game and said this is like the old Chicago Stadium. The glass was vibrating."
The last time Carolina led a series 2-0 was 15 years ago against Quebec. The former Hartford Whalers then lost four straight to bow out of the division semifinals.
"You play these things one at a time," Devils coach Kevin Constantine said. "What's important now is we go home and find a way to win in our building."
The Devils had an apparent goal by Brian Rafalski disallowed with 12:59 left in regulation as Patrik Elias was called for interfering with Irbe. However, no penalty was called because the contact was outside the blue crease area.
New Jersey's Martin Brodeur then took over, playing a spectacular final 12 minutes of regulation to hold the surging Hurricanes at bay before Battaglia's goal.
"You know two things -- they are Stanley Cup finalists and Stanley Cup champions the last two years," Maurice said when asked about the rest of the series. "Sure, they are not going to be very happy, but they're not going to get rattled."
The Hurricanes had played solid defense for the first four periods of the series, but a giveaway 37 seconds into the second gave the Devils their first lead.
Rod Brind'Amour ran into defenseman Aaron Ward, knocking him of his feet along the boards as the puck squirted right to Holik, who was alone in front with Irbe.
Holik had four goals and four assists against Carolina in last year's opening-round series.
Carolina then took three penalties in a span of five minutes and the game appeared to be turning in New Jersey's favor. But just like in Game 1, the Devils couldn't cash in.
In fact, Jamie Langenbrunner took a goaltender interference penalty early in New Jersey's third power play --and it proved costly.
Thirteen seconds after Sean Hill got out of the box, Carolina put together a beautiful passing play to tie it 1-1.
Ron Francis broke down the left wing and threw a backhanded pass to Battaglia, who backhanded the puck between the legs of New Jersey defenseman Scott Stevens and right on the stick of a streaking Cole, who actually mis-hit it, but the fluttering rubber fooled Brodeur.
