ST. JOHN'S, NFLD ... The Canadian AHL All-Stars made it a clean sweep of the 2002 Assante & Baker Hughes AHL All-Star Classic with a 13-11 victory in Thursday night's annual All-Star Game at a sold-out Mile One Stadium in St. John's, Nfld.
Game MVP Mike Craig of the Cleveland Barons led the Canadian attack with three goals and two assists, for a record-tying five-point performance. Hartford's Rico Fata had two goals and two assists for Canada, while Jeff Farkas of the hometown St. John's Maple Leafs led the PlanetUSA All-Stars with three goals and an assist. All told, 29 different players got on the scoresheet.
The see-saw affair saw the Canadian AHL All-Stars take a 7-3 lead late in the second period, only to see PlanetUSA roar back for a 10-8 advantage. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Tom Kostopoulos put the home team up for good with 1:31 to play, and Maple Leafs forward Don MacLean finished his two-goal third period with the eventual game-winner 37 seconds later.
It was a night for the record books, as no fewer than 18 AHL All-Star records were set or tied, including most goals by one team (13) and combined (24) and most shots on goal combined (112). Craig and Farkas recorded the first All-Star hat tricks since 1955, and Manchester defenseman Rich Brennan, who was selected to captain the PlanetUSA team and was voted a starter in fan balloting, joined Fred Glover and Dunc Fisher as the only six-time AHL All-Stars by playing the game's first shift despite a broken wrist.
It was the third straight All-Star Game victory for the Canadian AHL All-Stars, and combined with their 21-9 win in Wednesday's All-Star Skills Competition, Canada earned its first-ever sweep of an AHL All-Star Classic.
The American Hockey League's 2001-02 regular season resumes with 12 games on the schedule for Friday night, including a battle between the top two teams in the Central Division, as the Syracuse Crunch host the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in a special tilt at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

* The AHL published an impressive list of alumni playing in the Olympics, but left off Marc Seliger, the goalie who carried Germany through the preliminaries and into the final round. Maybe that's because Seliger is one of the worst goalies in league history. He went 0-3-1 with a .788 saves percentage and 4.98 goals-against average in 1996-97 before Portland released him.

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
