PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Coyotes acquired left wing Brian Savage, a third-round draft pick and future considerations Friday from the Montreal Canadiens for left wing Sergei Berezin.
"We are very happy to acquire a talented forward like Sergei Berezin," Montreal GM Andre Savard said. "He possesses good scoring skills, great speed he will be a significant addition to our offense." Savage has 14 goals and 15 assists in 47 games with Montreal this season. He led the Canadiens with seven power-play goals and was second in point production. He played his entire career with the Montreal organization. "I never asked for it, I was obviously a little surprised, it being my first trade," Savage told a Canadian radio station Friday night. "I'm going to miss Montreal, it was a great city. ... I hope they make the playoffs, I wish them the best. "Now it's time to move on." Savage turns 31 on Feb. 24. He becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season, and is seeking a contract worth $5 million per year. When he turned down a three-year, $9-million contract, Savard believed it was best to listen to the Coyotes' offer. "The offer was there for Brian and it didn't look like he was going to take it," Savard said. "With us fighting for the playoffs, we wanted to get a player in return and move on. "If we had waited until the end of the year, we would have gotten nothing in return." Because of injuries, Savage has not played a full season since 1996-97, when he set career highs with 37 assists and 60 points. In his only season with the Coyotes, Berezin recorded 7 goals and 9 assists in 41 games. "My production is not where it should be," Berezin admitted, "but I hope to improve." Phoenix acquired Berezin, 30, in a trade with Toronto for Mikael Renberg in June 2001. "I am very excited about it," Berezin said of the trade. "I'm looking forward to getting started in the biggest hockey city in the world." Berezin was to fly from Detroit to Montreal on Canadiens owner George Gillett's plane. He'll play Saturday if he passes a physical. Berezin is happy to be joined again with former Maple Leafs teammate Yanic Perreault. "(I) left a message for Perreault. We played together for a long time in Toronto and hopefully we'll play together." It's up to the Coyotes to decide whether to use the third-round pick in the 2002 or 2003 entry draft.

Jeremy Roenick 47 GP - 14 G - 34 A - 48 P - 46 PIM
