Burish leads Gamblers over Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Adam Burish and the Green Bay Gamblers’ offense found an opportunity to break out, and they did.

Burish scored two goals for the second straight game, helping the Gamblers to a 4-1 United States Hockey League victory Friday night against the Sioux Falls Stampede.

“Our forwards played outstanding,” Gamblers coach Mark Osiecki said. “Literally, the score could have been 6-0 going into the third period.”

The Gamblers (18-11-4) got halfway to that point with three goals in the first period.

Chris Michael opened the scoring 5 minutes, 54 seconds into the period, and Burish (on the power play at 8:22) and Tim Stapleton (at 19:50) added goals.

Burish added an empty-net goal late in the third.

Rico Fatticci scored the lone goal for Sioux Falls (23-11-1), but that was the lone blemish on Gamblers goaltender Eric Pfligler’s night.

He made 31 saves for his 17th victory of the season, and the Gamblers’ defense held down the Stampede’s Thomas Vanek, the USHL’s leading scorer.

“You kind of hold your breath” when Vanek has the puck,” Osiecki said. “He’s explosive. I think Nate Guenin, Matt Greene and Jake Taylor did a good job.”

Four Gamblers named to all-star team: Greene, Guenin, Burish and Taylor earned spots in the USHL’s All-Star/Prospects Game, Feb. 5 in Sioux Falls.

Greene, Guenin and Taylor are defensemen; Burish is a forward. Greene, Guenin and Burish will play for Team USHL; Taylor will skate with Team World.

“I don’t even know if they know about it,” Osiecki said, “but it’s great for them.”

Gamblers post victory in shootout

Press-Gazette

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Green Bay Gamblers outscored division-leading Cedar Rapids 2-0 in a shootout to defeat the RoughRiders 2-1 in a United States Hockey League game Saturday night.

The victory concluded a big road weekend for the Gamblers (19-11-4), who topped Sioux Falls 4-1 on Friday night. Their win over Cedar Rapids (22-11-4) narrowed the RoughRiders’ East Division lead to six points.

“I guarantee no one gave us any legitimate shot of winning this weekend,” Gamblers coach Mark Osiecki said. “They said Green Bay would go on the road and lose two games. …

“But when we k eep it simple and play hard as group, we have success.”

One of the Gamblers’ stars was goalie Eric Pfligler, who stopped 61 of 63 shots in the two games and turned back all four shootout tries on Saturday night. He made 30 saves against Cedar Rapids in regulation and overtime.

In the shootout, the Gamblers’ Jim McKenzie and Matt Johnson scored against Bobby Goepfert, who entered the game with a league-best 1.89 goals against average.

“Eric played well, but he wasn’t the difference,” Osiecki said. “The difference was the way our forwards played and the way the team played. The forwards played defense, they did a lot of the little things that it takes to win.”

A.J. Degenhardt scored the Gamblers’ only goal in regulation early in the first period. That lead held up until the RoughRiders’ Chris Snively’s blast beat Pfligler with 5:52 left in the third period.
