Any time you stop Jaromir Jagr cold, you've done a good night's work. And, noted defenceman Stéphane Quintal, when you can chip in with some offence, that's a welcome bonus.
"We not only held (Jagr) off the board, but if you look at the scoresheet, I think you'll find that we scored twice when he was on the ice," Quintal said after the Canadiens opened their season at home with a 5-1 win over Jagr and the Washington Capitals.
Quintal and defence partner Sheldon Souray combined with the checking line of Joé Juneau, Andreas Dackell and Jan Bulis to throw a blanket over Jagr and his linemates. Dackell scored the Canadiens' first goal while Souray made it 4-1 midway through the second period.
"The guys on that third line are our unsung heroes," coach Claude Julien said. "They not only killed penalties and matched up against their top line, but they also contributed a couple of goals. They're an example of the way we play. If you look at our goals, you can see that we get get chances because we play as a team."
One of the keys last night was the play of the Canadiens' special teams which were in the bottom third of the NHL last season. The Canadiens successfully killed off five power plays last night while the first of Yanic Perreault's two goals allowed Montreal to go 1-for-4 with the extra man.
The Canadiens have won two in a row and have outscored the opposition 9-1 in those games which is a convincing argument for the defensive system Julien is trying to implement this season.
"We didn't play the system in Ottawa (a 5-2 loss in the season opener) and that's one of the things I reminded the guys before we played in Toronto," Julien said.
Quintal said the key to the Canadiens' recent success is an attention to detail.
"You have to give our wingers a lot of credit because they're keeping is simple and getting the puck out along the boards," Quintal said. "Last year, it seemed we were getting caught a lot in the neutral zone."
The hot line last night had Perreault between Donald Audette and rookie Michael Ryder and they produced three goals. Perreault had two goals and an assist; Audette had a goal and two assists and Ryder had a pair of assists.
"There seems to be good chemistry with the three of us,' Perreault said. "I was saying earlier today that we want to get to a good start in games and we did that tonight. We have to keep doing that, game in and game out."
Audette, who is coming off a disappointing season, played a solid two-way game and relished in tie-tac-toe play that produced Perreault's first goal. He passed the puck to Ryder in front of the net and the rookie relayed the puck to Perreault in the slot.
"I think he was going to shoot but he had trouble controlling the puck and then he saw Yanic," Audette said.
"His strength is his shot," Perreault added. "But he's aware of the open spot and he gave me a great pass."
manm, das klingt richtig gut.scheint so, das sich alle lieb haben und sie geben sich sogar gegenseitig komplimente!und vor allem das neue system, was claude julien da eingeführt hat!!
