Panthers fire head coach Keenan

TSN.ca Staff

11/9/2003

Florida Panther general manager Rick Dudley will take over as interim head coach now that Mike Keenan has been fired, TSN has learned.

Dudley is expected to be behind the bench for Florida on Tuesday night when the Panthers take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Panthers are likely to call a news conference for later today to make the Keenan firing official.

Sources told TSN that Keenan was fired by Dudley because ownership, in this case majority owner Alan Cohen, grew weary of the "two-headed monster." When Dudley was hired as GM in Florida, Keenan was already in place as coach and with greater powers than normally associated with a head coach.

The perception from the outside was that there was a continuous power struggle between Keenan and Dudley, each jockeying for the owner's favour. Cohen apparently decided to erase any doubt about who should be calling every shot in the organization. That's when Keenan was fired after last night's 2-0 Panther loss to St. Louis.

The volatile Keenan had actually been quite calm and collected this season with the Panthers' young team. It was only in the last week that Keenan ratcheted up the 'Iron Mike' routine with his players, though many say it was long overdue for a Panther team that had been slipping of late.

Whether it was Keenan getting a little harsher this week or the power struggle simply came to a head, Cohen apparently gave Dudley the freedom to make any move the GM saw fit. And that spelled the end for Keenan in Florida.

Sources suggest Panther assistants Mike Pelino and John Torchetti will be kept on for the forseeable future, or certainly as long as Dudley remains interim head coach. Beyond that, the coaching staff composition is likely to be determined by the new head coach, whomever that may be.

Ludzik joins Panthers as assistant coach

Canadian Press

11/10/2003

SUNRISE, Fla. (CP) - Steve Ludzik has joined the Florida Panthers as an assistant coach under GM-coach Rick Dudley, who took over the team Sunday after the firing of Mike Keenan.

Ludzik replaces assistant coach Mike Pelino, who had been hired by Keenan. Pelino had joined the Panthers from Hockey Canada, where he won an Olympic gold medal as part of the Salt Lake City coaching staff for Team Canada.

``Steve has been able to coach and develop players at every level of the game, including the NHL,'' Dudley said in a statement. ``His experience developing young players in both Mississauga and San Antonio will be an asset to our team.

``He brings with him a wealth of hockey coaching and playing experience that is the perfect fit for our coaching staff.''

Dudley, the team's GM, took over as coach on an interim basis, and said he has already contacted candidates for the permanent job.

Larry Robinson is among the names being mentioned as a possible replacement.

Ludzik was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1999-2000 part of 2000-01 when Dudley was GM in Tampa. Ludzik, 42, joins the Panthers after guiding the Florida's AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, to an 8-3-1-0 mark through the first 11 games of the season. He also coached the OHL's Mississauga Ice Dogs last year.

Florida's next game is at home Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

Lemieux to miss another week with hip flexor injury

CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Mario Lemieux, out with a strained left hip flexor muscle since Nov. 1, will miss at least three more games because the injury hasn't responded to treatment.

Lemieux tried to skate during practice with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, but left the ice after only six minutes and did not return. Coach Eddie Olczyk said Lemieux would definitely miss games at New York on Wednesday and at Buffalo on Friday, as well as Saturday's home game with Florida.

Lemieux will not try to skate again for at least a week as he tries to recover from an injury that initially wasn't thought to be serious. The goal now is for Lemieux to be ready for a Nov. 19 home game against Minnesota.

``He will not do anything until next Monday,'' Olczyk said Monday. ``That's where it's at right now.''

Lemieux declined comment after skating for the first time since a pregame skate on Nov. 4 at Toronto. He did not play that night and has missed all but a few minutes of the last four games.

Before getting hurt, Lemieux had a goal and eight assists in 10 games and became the sixth player in NHL history to reach the 1,700-point mark. His eight-game scoring streak matches the longest in the NHL this season.

Without Lemieux, the Penguins' power play has slipped to 29th among the 30 teams, converting just 10.9 percent of its opportunities. Lemieux's absence has also hampered the Penguins' implementation of a new defensive system.

``He was doing so many things that, if you didn't know our team and you didn't know much about our game, he was doing a lot of little things,'' Olczyk said. ``It's a big loss. We haven't had him for the last couple games and, I don't want to say teams play differently against us, but certainly their focus is on him when he's on the ice.''

This isn't the first time Lemieux has missed time with a hip injury. He missed two-thirds of the 2001-02 season with recurring right hip problems, scoring 31 points in 24 games. He played in only one NHL game after helping lead Canada to the Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City, then sat out the rest of the season.

``Nobody's going to take his place,'' Olczyk said. ``They're going to take his ice time for a while and that's about it.''

Thornton rips refs, considers retirement

TSN.ca Staff

Boston Bruins star Joe Thornton is so fed up with the clutching and grabbing in the NHL that he has considered calling it quits.
In an interview with Gino Reda on TSN’s Molson That’s Hockey on Monday, Thornton said his frustration over the lack of penalty-calling boiled over in a game with the Pittsburgh Penguins last week.

"It was a tough day for me,” Thornton said. “I look back on it with thoughts that this might be my last year. It's not worth the pain. My back is killing me and things like that - it's just not worth the ordeal.

“You don't want to be a whiner, you just want to the game to be called how it is in the rulebook,” he said. “Hopefully, whoever is telling the officials not to call these penalties will look at it and see that they are penalties and, hopefully, we'll get some fun back into hockey."

Thornton said the clutch and grab style used by teams to hinder today’s power forwards needs to be addressed to help create more scoring opportunities, thus providing a greater entertainment package for fans.

"It's the holding, it's the clutching and grabbing. Things like that are taking goal scoring out of the game,” Thornton said. “They're looking at goaltender pads and things like that, and it might help in the long run, but if you cut down on this stuff in the offensive zone I think you'll see goal-scoring going up and fan attendance going up as well."

Thornton agreed with the notion that it was essentially open season on big forwards in the NHL.

"Right now, it is. You look at any defenceman and they know that … they can hold onto them, clutch and grab in the offensive zone and they are not going to get called. Everybody knows it. We know it in Boston with Glen Murray and Mike Knuble - that (defencemen) can do whatever they want. If they fall or trip there is not going to be any penalty."

Thornton noted that it was not unusual for his on-ice complaints to fall on deaf ears. In fact, he said many referees tell him to just play through it. Thornton said he’s generally told, "You're big and strong, stay on your feet, keep your legs moving and fight through it.”
Thornton said it gets tougher when he starts to hear that on a regular basis.

“When it's every game and (the referees) keep on telling you that, it gets pretty frustrating and you wish they were in your shoes for two or three shifts out there."

Go Bruins Go!
