CHICAGO (CP) - The Chicago Blackhawks fired general manager Mike Smith on Friday in a move that was anticipated as early as last spring.
Blackhawks senior vice-president Bob Pulford was named interim GM. It's the fourth time he's assumed GM duties. He had three previous stints between 1977 and 2000.
The Hawks are off to a slow start this season at 2-4-1-0 after having missed the playoffs last year, placing ninth in the Western Conference at 30-33-13-6.
Smith was called home from Chicago's current four-game Western road trip - which began with a 3-3 tie in San Jose on Thursday night - and was told to meet with Pulford. The Hawks play in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The Hawks cited philosophical differences between Smith and head coach Brian Sutter.
``It had become apparent to me toward the end of last season and the beginning of this year that our general manager and head coach were not on the same page,'' Pulford said in a statement. ``From personal experience, I can tell you that hockey is a team game and everybody has to be pulling in the same direction. That just was not happening here.''
Rumours swirled last spring that Smith would be fired and that Pulford would bring in his son-in-law, former San Jose GM Dean Lombardi. Lombardi, fired by the Sharks last March after seven years with the club, was hired as a scout by the Philadelphia Flyers on Aug. 25.
Smith joined the Blackhawks as manager of hockey operations in December 1999 and was made the seventh GM in franchise history in September 2000. The Hawks made the playoffs for the first time in five years in 2001-02 and Smith was named Executive of the Year by the Sporting News, as voted on by his own peers.
Smith began his NHL career as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers and Colorado Rockies in the late 1970s before moving on to Winnipeg, where he held a variety of positions with the Jets from 1979 to 1994. He served the Jets as a vice-president and GM, assistant GM, coach, director of scouting and director of recruiting.
He served as a consultant with the Blackhawks from 1995 to 1997 under then-GM Pulford.
Smith then became associate GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs for two seasons before re-joining the Blackhawks.
In an interview with The Canadian Press last month, Smith said last January's strip-club incident in Columbus involving Theo Fleury sent the Blackhawks into a downward spiral, the main reason they missed the playoffs for a fifth time in six years.
``Up until that point we were playing at a 96-point rate,'' Smith said Sept. 17. ``For 25 games following that we were playing at a 39-point rate. Then we made a bunch of deals at the trade deadline and went back and played at a 97-point rate.
``So when you look at those three different parts of the season, my conclusion is that for whatever reason, that incident was devastating to our team.''
In April, Fleury was placed in Stage 3 of the league's substance abuse and behavioural health program, suspended without pay for at least six months. He must apply to the league for reinstatement.
Smith, meanwhile, made other house-cleaning moves after the incident.
Veterans Phil Housley, Lyle Odelein, Steve Thomas and Sergei Berezin were traded at the March deadline while forwards Andrei Nikolishin, Chris Simon and Mike Eastwood were dumped in the off-season.
Smith brought in a number of young players this season that he felt would be the first step in rebuilding the club. Prized rookie centre Tuomo Ruutu was the player Smith touted the most but he also brought in forwards Igor Radulov, Pavel Vorobiev and Mikhail Yakubov and defenceman Anton Babchuk.
``My sense is that the ownership here and the entire organization are quite excited about what's going on here right now,'' Smith said at the time. ``With as many as five or six rookies possibly landing regular jobs, there's a sense of excitement here that hasn't been since I got here.''
TSN has learned that the Minnesota Wild have signed forward Pascal Dupuis, ending a holdout by the restricted free agent.
The signing leaves just forward Marian Gaborik, the team's other holdout, to sign.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed but TSN has learned that it's a 3-year deal.
Dupuis collected 20 goals and 28 assists with a +17 rating last season and, along with Gaborik, lead the Wild in goals as the club battled to the Western Conference finals before losing to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Earlier in the month, Dupuis' agent Allan Walsh (who also represents Gaborik) said three European teams had contacted his client, offering more than what Minnesota had put on the table.
Dupuis has been working out with the Concordia University hockey team in Montreal during contract negotiations.

Matt Cullen, who worked rigorously this summer to prepare himself for training camp, underwent surgery for a "sports hernia" on Friday morning to repair two tears to his abdominal wall. He is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks.
It's got to be devastating for him," General Manager Rick Dudley said. "You knew exactly when it happened because you could see him drop off. I remember saying, `Geez, Matt didn't have a good game tonight' and [trainer] David [Boyer] said, `He's got a little bit of a sore ab.'
"At the time that's all we thought it was, but it didn't go away. I just feel bad for him because he prepared so hard."
Dudley said if he eventually needs to replace Cullen, it would come most likely via promotion from the minors rather than a trade.
"I don't think we have to do anything right now, but we have Stephen Weiss playing extremely well in San Antonio," Dudley said. "He scored in each of the last three games. And we have Vaclav Nedorost about to come back [from offseason shoulder surgery] there.
"There's no one out there that would be better than either of those guys."
In the meantime, coach Mike Keenan said he'll continue to use Viktor Kozlov sporadically at center, depending on the opposing lineups.

Nach langem Hin und Her haben die Minnesota Wild endlich ihren „restricted Freeagent“ Pascal Dupuis unter Vertrag genommen. Es handelt sich dabei um einen Drei-Jahres-Vertrag. Genauere Konditionen wurden noch nicht bekannt gegeben. Der 24-jährige Kanadier hatte in der vergangenen Saison 20 Tore und 28 Vorlagen in 82 Spielen erzielt. Dieser neue Vertrag belässt den Star des Teams, Marian Gaborik, als einzigen verbleibenden „Freeagent“ der Wild ohne neuen Vertrag. Gaborik weigert sich strikt für die Wild aufs Eis zu gehen, sollte nicht bald eine Einigung im Vertragsstreit erzielt werden. Allerdings hat der Slowake in der letzten Woche seinen Agenten gewechselt, um so eine Einigung zu forcieren.(TS)
Wie in kanadischen Zeitungen zu lesen war, waren die Edmonton Oilers bereits vor zwei Jahren nahe an einer Verpflichtung von New York Rangers’ Center Eric Lindros. Dies sollte damals die Probleme der Oilers auf der Centerposition lösen. Ein ähnliches Problem hat man in Edmonton im Moment auch. Durch den Streik von Mike Comrie belässt dies die Oilers nur mit einem starken Center, nämlich Mike York. Sogar Ryan Smyth, als eigentlicher Flügelstürmer, muss in der derzeitigen Situation als Mittelstürmer aushelfen.
Da keine Einigung zwischen Comrie’s Agent und der Oilers Führung in Sichtweite ist, ist die Gerüchteküche am kochen. Viele Namen stehen im Raum, die als mögliche Kandidaten bei einem Comrie Tauschgeschäft in Frage kämen. Scott Gomez von den New Jersey Devils oder Marc Savard aus Calgary sind nur einige Beispiele.
Das stärkste Gerücht bringt allerdings Eric Lindros in den Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Ziemlich unbeliebt bei New York´s Fans hat Generalmanager Glen Sather schon seit längerem versucht, den kräftigen Center zu tauschen. Dies scheiterte jedoch meist an seinem sehr hochdotierten Vertrag. Sollte es zu einem Trade zwischen Edmonton und den Rangers kommen, müsste New York mindestens die Hälfte von Lindros’ verbleibendem Gehalt zahlen oder mit einem ihrer jungen Talente das Angebot ausschmücken.
Ein solcher Tausch wäre für beide Seiten von Vorteil. Die Rangers bekämen einen sehr talentierten und vor allem jungen Erste-Reihe Center, der schon in der Vergangenheit in Edmontons Top Reihe mit dem enttäuschenden Rangers Stürmer Anson Carter zusammen gezaubert hat, und Edmonton bekommt einen Baum von Mann als Center, der es im Westen sicherlich leichter haben wird, sich durchzusetzen, als im meist sehr harten Osten.
